Team of 3 house movers. Small company, guys have been great! Very cheap compared to some quotes we had - only £320 😳 moving a 2 bed house and it’s a 10 min journey.

What do I tip? Give them £400 cash for the job? Tip each one a certain amount? Should I be tipping more than that?

Crazykatie · 13/04/2022 13:05

I’d give then £20 each if they did a good job, your choice if you do.

Courante · 13/04/2022 13:09

I think £20/each sounds good.

I'm still mortified (nearly 20 yrs later) that we didn't tip for a removal very similar to yours, as it honestly didn't occur to us (young) until afterwards so I would definitely tip.

ToPlayOrNotToPlay · 13/04/2022 13:13

I would round to 350 if you really want to tip but it probably wouldn't even occur to me to tip removals tbh

girlmom21 · 13/04/2022 13:14

FFS are we supposed to tip moving companies now too?

TokyoSushi · 13/04/2022 13:16

If you could afford £400 cash for the job they'd probably really appreciate it. Otherwise, we tipped ours £20 each.

Yeah, this - unless they've had to take on something that was unexpected or to go very much above and beyond, they've given you a quote for a job based on their costs.

Rounding it up to £350, which would then be roughly a beer each, would be nice, but I agree with the PP - I don't think tipping removers is a thing.

Oh my gosh, when we moved into our house (in 2007!) I forgot to have cash on hand to tip the movers. I ended up tipping them in cupcakes I had baked. Blush I mean, I'm a great baker but I'm sure they would have preferred cash...
Rotherweird · 13/04/2022 13:20

I would definitely tip them - they've done a great job and £20 - or even £10 - each is likely to make a real difference to them and be appreciated.

@girlmom21 I always tip tradesmen etc if I’m happy with work so I just assumed movers would be the same 🤷🏻‍♀️ We were quoted £550 and £500 from 2 other local companies so even with a tip these guys have saved me money and done everything really quickly and efficiently 🤷🏻‍♀️

I tipped our removals guys 100 because the original company let us down morning of the move, and after ringing round loads in a panic this company agreed to come out after their final job of the day and saved us. Not sure I would have tipped otherwise.

@Courante 🤣 thats what I was worried about doing - or forgetting to get cash out for them 🙈

@RandomName130 I'm moving in the next month or two and our quote is £1300 so I'm loathe to tip but if it's standard practice perhaps we should Confused

We're moving more and further as well so feels like the distance will inconvenience them more!

@IKillHousePlants as if moving isn’t stressful enough without that 🙈😬 glad you managed to get sorted! I’d definitely have tipped them too!

Yes, absolutely.

I've just bought them some beer

@girlmom21 ours were actually from further away from us than what we were moving but came highly recommended so I called them and they were happy to do the journey!
Definitely seems like tipping is the done thing from everyone’s replies on here 😊 maybe even get them lunch or something in if you don’t want to tip cash 🤷🏻‍♀️

Man with van removers I wouldn't generally tip as the price is usually a cash one but 'proper' house removers we've always tipped, 20 - 50 depending on volume of stuff. Yours is a 20 I'd say. Given in cash to each one individually.

girlmom21 · 13/04/2022 13:28

@RandomName130 I'll tip cash if it's the done thing but just had never even considered it before! I'm glad you posted Grin

AffIt · 13/04/2022 13:28

Why? Tradespeople (if we're talking about plumbers, joiners etc) are highly skilled and experienced professionals and business owners who will price a job accordingly - we're not talking about the Saturday girl at the hairdresser's here.

Yes. Of course you should. Unless they overcharge and do a shit job. Why is that a question.

I think that £20 each for a very good and reasonably priced service sounds about right.

2bazookas · 13/04/2022 13:36

Put a £20 quid note into several separate sealed envelopes; give one to each mover before they leave.

Redglitter · 13/04/2022 13:38

Never even crossed my mind to tip when I moved house. The company got well paid for the amount of stuff (1 bedroom flat to 1 bedroom house) & the distance involved.

girlmom21 · 13/04/2022 13:40

@Topseyt what do you mean, why is that even a question?

Because it doesn't make sense to me to pay for a service then pay more than the agreed amount because somebody's done their job...

@AffIt I’m well aware that they’re highly skilled professionals 😊 My dad is a self-employed tradesman I know how much he always appreciated when customers gave a tip so I’ve always just given one 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t think there’s anything wrong for showing appreciation for a job well done 🤷🏻‍♀️ I always usually tip and then I’ll leave a good review or recommendation on local social media pages
