Team of 3 house movers. Small company, guys have been great! Very cheap compared to some quotes we had - only £320 😳 moving a 2 bed house and it’s a 10 min journey.

What do I tip? Give them £400 cash for the job? Tip each one a certain amount? Should I be tipping more than that?

Your budget for the movers should include a tip.
No, their budget, their quote, should cover employee's wages.

Don't you see that that's a completely different argument?

If it is customary or you feel it is right to tip a certain type of service provider, then your personal income compared to theirs is irrelevant and shouldn't come into it. If on the other hand tipping a certain type of service provider is optional or not expected, then whether you choose to tip or not is completely up to you (and of course your financial situation will probably be a factor).

I wouldn't tip a plumber or an electrical so wouldn't tip removal men. I suppose I might get them a case of beer if they did a good job

As employees in service industries in the UK are paid the same minimum wage as other industries, tipping is optional. A gift to show appreciation, knowing that the employee is already being paid for the work done. So the customer's financial situation is entirely relevant.

Right. So we agree.

So it's not miserly to choose not to give an optional extra to someone who earns more than you do when you have already paid for the work in full.

I wasn't talking about an optional tip. I was talking about when a tip would be expected or customary..

I consider all tipping to be an optional extra in the UK as all industries have the same minimum wage, there is not a lower minimum wage for service industries.

I always tip tradesmen etc if I’m happy with work

Why? Tradespeople (if we're talking about plumbers, joiners etc) are highly skilled and experienced professionals and business owners who will price a job accordingly - we're not talking about the Saturday girl at the hairdresser's here.[/quote]
I had a door fitter recently fit a £2000 door and while on a tea break tell me about the pool he was fitting in his own garden. Then hung around awkwardly obviously looking for a tip at the end of the job. After telling me about his pool!

We tipped our removals £100 as they were completely fantastic and quoted us about 1000 less than the two other companies

We really lucked out that day
