Today I met with friend for a coffee. She mentioned getting some new curtains and I told her I got some new bedding from Wilko. 2 x duvet sets king size 2 x fitted sheets king size and 2 packs of 2 pillow cases all for £88 and I was cuffed about it. She said that i must have more money than sense, and would never pay those prices…
I thought that was an absolute bargain! And told her so and she said I clearly don’t shop around.
Have a missed something? Is bedding cheaper than that for what I got?
I’m kicking myself now I didn’t ask her where she buys bedding from but I was really shocked she thought it was expensive!

@TOADfan but she got 2 kingsize duvet sets , 2 sheets and pillows for £88 not just one , the 2 x duvet would come to £44 at dunhelm plus the other stiff so maybe a fraction cheaper but not loads and maybe not like for like as dunhelm does a lot more expensive sets as well

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 12/04/2022 23:24

I don’t think that’s expensive. Sure you can get it cheaper if you want to sleep on polyester.

Don’t know what her problem was, my mum can be the same. Any mention of what I spent on something, could be £3 on a tin of Nescafé, and she’ll make a comment about how I’m so bad with money. Tedious, but she’s my mum so I ignore Grin

I just had a look at Wilko’s bedding, as well as Dunelm, B&M and George sites as they’ve been mentioned on here. They all seem to have similar prices at the lower end. So if it was somewhere like that your friend had in mind, it doesn’t sound like the choice of shop was the issue. I.e. maybe you didn’t necessarily go for the very cheapest in Wilko?

Seems like you chose what you did because you liked it and you felt it was good value. If you can afford it, enjoy it! If you can’t, maybe your friend can offer some tips next time rather than making you feel deflated.

oioimatey · 12/04/2022 23:39

Is it a nice material? If so, it sounds good to me.

ZeroCaffeine · 13/04/2022 02:03

If you’d paid that for good quality it wouldn’t be expensive. But it’s wilko, and therefore a shit deal

cauliflowersqueeze · 13/04/2022 04:53

Who cares what the price is. She shouldn’t be judging you and she was rude to make that comment.

Mumdiva99 · 13/04/2022 05:02

For those saying you can buy cheaper at Dunelm.....I bought really cheap duvet covers in the last sale from there and they are shit. The duvet slides around in them all night. My son hates them. I keep thinking another wash and they'll be OK. They aren't.

£88 for that is a good price if you like them.

switswooo · 13/04/2022 05:54

I don’t get the replies, £88 is very cheap for

2 x King size duvet covers
2 x king fitted sheets
4 x pillow cases (2 packs)

That’s an average price of £14.66 per pack, and £44 per full bed set!

Any cheaper and you’re buying 50% polyester sets which are not good.

PukkaP · 13/04/2022 05:58

It's not really expensive, bit it's more than I'd pay

SlashBeef · 13/04/2022 06:13

I think that's expensive for Wilko. I'm not against spending a lot on bedding, I think the duvet set on my bed now was £60, but I'd want good quality and I don't think Wilko is.

MissMaple82 · 13/04/2022 06:59

I think its good!

RitaFires · 13/04/2022 07:21

Yeah you could probably find them a little cheaper if you were only motivated by price but it's worth paying more for better quality sheets and duvet covers.

I really don't think spending 88 quid on them in any way indicates more money than sense. I don't know if your friend is having financial issues at the moment but she has been needlessly nasty.

It can be a mistake to discuss the cost of things in too much detail as some people can get very weird about money but I really don't think the amount you spent was at the unwise to discuss level.

Princesspickle777 · 13/04/2022 07:30

To me that would be pricy not a bargain but if you’re happy then I wouldn’t get hung up over the comment. Maybe she could have worded it better. Maybe ask her where she shops for bedding.

Haveatakeaway · 13/04/2022 08:36

I was gutted when I had to get a new duvet, duvet cover, sheets, pillows the lot after my dog got scared of fireworks and shit on my bed Envy was co sleeping at the time so luckily had a mattress protector on. I got pillows and duvet from asda (kingsize) and thought Matalan would be cheapish. I was so shocked when my mum came back from Dunelm with something much nicer and cheaper. I always assumed Dunelm was expensive, I think it used to be. To be fair though it must be about six years ago and it hasn't pilled or lost any buttons etc.

10HailMarys · 13/04/2022 09:55

There is probably cheaper bedding available, but there's also bedding available that's vastly more expensive! I think you got a really good deal, personally.

Your friend, by the way, is quite rude.

SpringsSprung · 13/04/2022 15:38

I only buy 100% cotton (I'm not anywhere near a snob, I just find they last so much longer and I like the way it feels! I also despise polyester) but I still look for as decent prices as possible. I got a fab 100% cotton king size duvet cover & pillowcases from Edinburgh Woollen Mill in the sale for £17.50! Then I'd expect to pay about £15 for a fitted sheet. So if I'd bought them twice, that's £65.

I guess if it's 100% cotton then it's a good buy. If it's not and contains artificial fabrics then it's definitely not a good buy

SpringsSprung · 13/04/2022 15:40

Good, decent bedding can be an investment! My parents bought some thick towelling sheets in the 80s and they're still lovely! They were £10 each in 1980!

IFinallyJoinedNowWhat · 13/04/2022 15:54

Asda bedding is superb - also their bath towels! Great quality and cheap too.
