Neighbours bins. Am I being petty?

I’m not in the best of moods tonight so am I being a bit ridiculous MN?…

My neighbour has a slightly narrower driveway than mine and on rubbish day he always puts his bins in front of my bushes - see diagram below.

He can’t really put them on the pavement on the right hand side of his drive as there is a lamppost (marked by yellow L) and the bins would block the pavement. However there would be space to put them on the left (red question mark) and still get a car in and out of the drive but instead they’re always in front of our drive.

It’s never really bothered me before but I’ve started to realise he does this every week now. It’s not just the bins being there but the bin men consistently leave bins directly in front of our driveway so I can’t get the car in and when I get home I have not just our own but the neighbours bins in the way.

Am I being a bit petty?

I'm not clear why you couldn't have a friendly chat? I'd also see if you can't move your bins to the far side of your house, basically both as far away from the drive as possible.
"Hi neighbour, the binmen keep leaving all the bins on my drive, both mine and yours, which is so annoying when I get home on bin days. Would you mind putting yours over in RED spot for a few weeks please, and I'm going to put mine at the far end of the house on my side to see if I can break their habit. Thank you so much."

If that doesn't stop it then contact the council with a photo and ask them to have a word.

(With the binmen, not the neighbour, obviously!)

No, you don’t get what I’m saying - here’s a diagram:

Time wise, it makes NO difference to bin men to put bins to either side of the driveway instead of blocking it.

I (obviously) don’t expect the bin men to drag the bin UP the drive … just not block it!

@Anotherselfemployedcleaner sorry but you are wrong. dumping a bin randomly is faster than thinking about it.

My main point is - you get your bins emptied every week/fortnight - it is not a big deal to move the bin. If someone is too busy to get out of your car and move your own bin, pay a domestic servant.

If it makes any difference to how you view my answers, I used to work in a council dealing with these issues. The public expect the moon on a stick for fuck all money, basically.

ukborn · 16/04/2022 08:48

regardless of where your neighbours put their bins, it's the bin men that are really the culprits here. Try putting a polite notice on top of the bins asking for them not to obstruct your driveway?

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 16/04/2022 08:52

@carefullycourageous

Well, we’ll just have to disagree - and If it makes a difference to how you view MY answers, I’m a domestic cleaner, so my job is to clear up after other people. Very aware of what takes time and what doesn’t. When you’re disabled (like a previous neighbour of mine) and you can’t physically move the bins from blocking the drive so that you can get your car off the road and into your drive, it’s a big problem that shouldn’t happen.

It's not 'being too busy' it's a number of things including not being able to pull off a busy road, being disabled, etc

It's not 'fuck all money' council tax is a chunk of money & enough of that goes to waste management. Yes, it's not a job I'd want or be physically able to do, but bin men get paid decently, not dumping bins in the middle of a driveway, shouldn't be beyond them! They manage in many places!!

Ikeptgoing · 17/04/2022 09:48

I'm disabled and I can barely walk to my car from my house let alone get out and move bins from middle of my drive, get back in so I then can drive out to access shops or back into my drive.

Our bin men have just started leaving one of my bins after being emptied in the middle of my drive entrance. Lots of room either side not blocking my drive. They are doing it all up and down the road like this now- which the binmen never did before in 20 years Ive lived here. It's bizarre.

It takes no extra time for them to leave it not blocking driveways (can see from my bedroom window - I'm an early riser) literally walking bins past perfectly good places to leave them.

Pretty sure they will get complaints as people all up and down the street now have to pull in to side of road park up, get out and move a bin out of blocking their drive to be able to drive onto the driveway- that's really poor of binmen to do. And it makes no sense why they are doing this.

I think OPs problem is mostly binmen but NDN wasn't helping as by leaving his bins outside OP's house aswell that she then has double number of bins to move from middle of her drive.

SINBU to feel Hmm and anyway she has a solution now at least to cut down on also being lumbered with NDN's bins!

The first part of my post was in answer to your sorry but you are wrong. dumping a bin randomly is faster than thinking about it.

As it doesn't take more time

This 'debate' is making me laugh, of course it is faster to just dump something than place it. You must have never had to do anything quickly in your life to not know the trade off between speed and precision.

carefullycourageous · 17/04/2022 10:43

It's not 'fuck all money' council tax is a chunk of money & enough of that goes to waste management. @LoveSpringDaffs my council tax bill certainly feels a lot when I pay it, but in terms of what is needed for services to be delivered it is nowhere near enough.

@carefullycourageous

It's always interesting when people assume they're the only ones who do or are involved with a certain thing.

🙄🙄

In terms of time/service, speed/precision it's laughable you think this can't be done effectively & efficiently.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 17/04/2022 12:49

@carefullycourageous

Are you being deliberately obtuse? Ok, let’s use your terminology - you really think that ‘dumping’ a bin on the pavement takes more time than ‘dumping’ it in a driveway?

You’ve also used the words ‘place’ and ‘precision’ neither of which are required when ‘dumping’ a bin.

What would you do if you were disabled like @Ikeptgoing, who has seen the bins being walked past places they could be left, and instead purposely blocking her drive? In that example, they’re taking extra time by walking further!

icanonlydosomuch · 18/04/2022 12:36

For those talking about the elderly and disabled struggling to get bins in and out, if you phone your council they will arrange for the refuse collectors to take them out and put them right back in their place.

icanonlydosomuch · 18/04/2022 12:39

Following on from my last post ...

However this doesn't help if an elderly or disabled person wants to go out in their car and the neighbours bin has been left blocking their driveway!
