Neighbours bins. Am I being petty?

I’m not in the best of moods tonight so am I being a bit ridiculous MN?…

My neighbour has a slightly narrower driveway than mine and on rubbish day he always puts his bins in front of my bushes - see diagram below.

He can’t really put them on the pavement on the right hand side of his drive as there is a lamppost (marked by yellow L) and the bins would block the pavement. However there would be space to put them on the left (red question mark) and still get a car in and out of the drive but instead they’re always in front of our drive.

It’s never really bothered me before but I’ve started to realise he does this every week now. It’s not just the bins being there but the bin men consistently leave bins directly in front of our driveway so I can’t get the car in and when I get home I have not just our own but the neighbours bins in the way.

Am I being a bit petty?

Our binmen leave the bins anywhere, it can often require a bit of a search 😂. But if they leave it too close to next door, next door moves it into the middle of my drive, so I have to park to move it before I can get in my drive 🤷‍♀️

Thestagshead · 12/04/2022 22:57

He prob puts them there so it’s easier for the bin men to collect all ar once, I doubt he thinks you’d take issue as yours are already there.

doggyweewee · 12/04/2022 22:57

Our neighbours use our drive way to bring the bins from the side of their house to the front and then put their bins infront of our side of the hedge too!

Really annoying but it’s a new build with open plan fronts and they haven’t lived in the UK long. So for the sake of politeness we have said nothing Blush perhaps we will erect a fence soon Hmm

Makes no difference here, wherever we put them (at the end of our drive) the bin,en put them back wherever they like and we (all houses) have to look for them 🙄

My neighbours used to do this. Every week without fail they would put their bin out in front of my house instead of their own, it used to drive me insane as they would always take 'my spot' and didn't leave much room for my bin. It also annoyed me because they would quite often have an overflowing bin or surplus bags and it would be left out right in front of my flowerbed. Recycling day used to give me the rage as if it was a windy day their plastic pots and cans would end up all over my garden. They are also pretty shite at bringing the bins in which meant I had their bin outside my house for days. Seems petty but it pissed me off week after week and I used to feel anxious feeling like I needed to get out there first with the bins. Funnily enough one day when a stray beer can (which I assumed was from the alcoholic male neighbour) came rolling on to my property I picked it up and put it in their bin. I must have been caught on doorbell camera because a couple of days later the bins were moved to the other side of their house and they no longer put it outside mine. Hallelujah! If I'd known that would do the trick I'd have done it sooner! Grin. If I were you I'd put your bins where they have been putting theirs so there's no room. Hopefully they will take the hint!

Love your picture.. really cheered me up Grin

Same here. I’ve never given it any thought. There’s a big number on ours so it’s easy to find.

Well I'm sure the bin men put them there because that's where they pick them up from!

1forAll74 · 13/04/2022 03:02

Yes it's being a bit petty.. life is too short, to be bothering about wheelie bin issues.

CircleofWillis · 13/04/2022 03:59

Have you asked them not to put their bins in front of your house and explained why?

Of course you are being petty!

Plumbear2 · 13/04/2022 06:39

To be fair they are not blocking your drive. They are behind a hedge on the footpath that you do not own.

SunshineAndFizz · 13/04/2022 06:46

I think they're being perfectly reasonable - in front of the hedge not blocking anything. It's just unfortunate that the binmen leave them somewhere inconvenient.

OP Is it that you feel by NDN putting their bins also outside your house , it is encouraging binmen to return bins to outside your house/ blocking your drive? Or that it restricts your view when pulling out as right up against edge of your car exit point ?

I wouldn't like bins both sides immediately up to my drive entrance if it could be helped, as it would block my view when pulling out of my drive to see cars coming from the right (if In UK as we are left hand drive, so we look to right for oncoming cars)

That's why -where they can - most people naturally tend to gravitate to putting their own bins out on bin collection day to their left if at front of house.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 13/04/2022 07:15

YABU: I wouldn’t mind my neighbour leaving their bins in the position you show in the diagram. Not on your property, so not worth causing a fuss about.

YANBU: The bin men absolutely shouldn’t block the drive though - had this problem once with a previous neighbour who was disabled, and not physically able to move the bins herself if she got home to find her drive blocked. Solved by leaving a note on her bin next collection day, but had it happened again, would have emailed the council and complained.

Cervinia · 13/04/2022 07:39

I thought all bin men just dumped the bins roughly near the house and threw the recycling boxes across the road 🤷‍♀️

overitall1 · 13/04/2022 07:47

@user1471530109

Put your bins where he does. Get out there first!
This!!!
CrystalCoco · 13/04/2022 07:50

It might seem petty to some but I sympathise, we had a similar issue with bins blocking the driveway and it's a pain in the ass to park up, move the bin, back in the car and get in the drive - esp as hygiene-wise I prefer to wash my hands straight after touching bin handles, not have to get back in my car and touch my steering wheel, gear stick etc - just feels manky!

Oysterbabe · 13/04/2022 07:53

Yabu. Definitely incredibly petty.
