Washing overnight

overitall1 · 12/04/2022 10:48

Yesterday evening my DH realised that the washing that had been done the previous night was still in the machine. (He should have hung it out as he was WFH and I was in the office). So at 6pm he hung it out. Confused

I TOLD him not too as it would get darked on, but he insisted. Hmm

This morning we got up and it was raining. He said 'There, everything will be fine, the rain will have washed off all the dark AND where the spiders willies have rubbed. No need to re wash it'

Dilemma: do I believe him or do I re wash?

That the washing has been hung out overnight in the dark!

Ours was out overnight as it was the best chance of it drying. I got it in before it rained, however!

I hang washing out at night all the time, I’m all for being darked on and am not scared of willies-spider ones or otherwise Wink
Rain makes it all lovely and soft (the washing, not the willies) Grin

AchillesPoirot · 12/04/2022 11:43

I would have rewatched it because it sat damp in the machine for 24 hours.

Hanging it out to get darked on and spider willies and all that would not bother me one bit as long as it’s dry weather. (But I don’t get the darked on spider willies stuff anyway)

AchillesPoirot · 12/04/2022 11:44

*rewashed

PrivateHall · 12/04/2022 11:45

Urgh DH is being very unreasonable, rain water is obviously not sufficient to wash off the Dark. LTB.

Have a think, what do you think it could mean 🤔

This. I'd rewash but couldn't care less about it being light or dark outside.
girlmom21 · 12/04/2022 11:46

Let it dry before you rewash it or you'll have a damp smell

I actually have, and I still can't figure it out. Not everybody here is a native English speaker. Sure, I could google it, but there are many expressions that are hard to get the meaning of by googling.

SevenWaystoLeave · 12/04/2022 11:48

Dark doesn't stick to clothes ?

VerifiedBot2351 · 12/04/2022 11:51

‘Darked on’
Like the night will stick to the clothes?

UthredofBattenberg · 12/04/2022 11:51

See, I leave my washing to get darkedon all the time, and the spider willies dont bother me.

However, I'd rewash if it's been rained on, cause it will have the outside rain smell on it.

If that doesnt bother you, it's fine, the rain will have certainly washed all the dark and willy residue away!

NameChange30 · 12/04/2022 11:56

DH should rewash it, as he's the one who forgot about it and left it wet in the machine for ages.

I use the timer on the washing machine, prep it all in the evening and time it to finish in the morning, then we can hang it up first thing (before work if working). Only if the forecast is dry though obviously.

TheGlitterati · 12/04/2022 11:57

I’d have rewashed it regardless.

user1473878824 · 12/04/2022 11:58

It’s an old Mumsnet joke, if you leave your washing out overnight it gets darked on. And spiders rub their willies all over your clean clothes. All over them.

spacefrog35 · 12/04/2022 11:59

Spider willies /sniggers

Darked on needs to go in the fucking bin along with spider willies, pathetic

It's a MN in joke. Someone started a thread ages ago about leaving washing out overnight and someone said you can't do that it'll get darked on. There were also jokes about spiders dragging their willies over the washing. It's just a stupid MN thing.

I actually quite often hang my washing out in the evening. It saves me a job in the orning when things are more hectic.

NoCleverNickname · 12/04/2022 12:07

In summer, I prefer to leave my washing out overnight, so that it can firstly get dries and secondly get dry without being bleached into non existence. But I live in an extremely hot, low humidity, environment so it works for me. Plus, I just checked the local weather bureau website and we had no rain from beginning of December to mid-February. So it's quite safe to leave washing out but important to collect it in as early as possible because of the bleaching effect. Which is good (maybe) for linens, towels and such. I must admit that towels and bedding never go that weird yellowish colour that white linens are (apparently) prone too but I never had that problem when I lived in the north of England where it seemed to rain a lot! Although I did wash my linens twice weekly then as I do now.

VerifiedBot2351 · 12/04/2022 12:24

I’ve never come across that on MN in all the time I’ve been here. I must have been on the more interesting threads 😆
