Or solar panels?

We have ugly looking lampposts on every street. not as big but just as ugly. Big massive triangular towers that buzz in the rain? they are everywhere. some in people's back bloody gardens, not to mention the big boxed off electric areas that have the electric will kill you warning sign.
Cities are full of them, every other road has one so why no wind Mills?

Pylons aren't pretty but they have a kind of majesty about them. Standing tall, out in the open in all weathers, bringing us our electricity. That's quite cool. I don't have an opinion on wind turbines.

MiddleOfThePack · 12/04/2022 19:24

@junglejane66 - assume with clogs on?

jcyclops · 12/04/2022 21:43

I don't mind pylons or wind turbines.

Several areas on the outskirts of my town have pylons heading in to substations before the supply goes underground in the town. Nearly every line of pylons has parks/recreation grounds underneath. I am certain that the parks/recs are safe from house builders due to the pylons. Parents taking kids to play in away football matches who are not totally sure of where the venue is just head for the pylons!

etulosba · 13/04/2022 10:09

I'm guessing by windmill you mean wind turbine. Do you mean pylons when you talk about triangular lamp posts??

I don’t think there is any need to be precious about the term windmill when referring to a wind powered electrical generator.

People are generally happy to refer to the structures shown in the picture as windmills, despite the fact that they are actually drainage pumps, not mills at all.

Didn't they have a previous competition for new pylon designs about 20 years ago? I don't know what happened about bringing in the new designs. One of them was a super tall fake pine tree… which might have looked OK, or might have been really annoying, not sure.

I don't mind the ink pen drawing-like old design pylons we have now, marching across the land, but maybe I’m just used to them.

Wind turbines are OK, but they really shouldn't put them in beauty spots.

Solar farms are a great idea and apparently there are thriving ecosystems on the ground between the panels. It's not that much of a stretch to have slightly larger gaps and let wild flowers flourish, maybe with hives?

That's interesting as before reading this thread I don't think I've ever seen or heard of wind turbines referred to as windmills. Maybe it's an age thing but does anyone's mind conjure up a picture of a wind turbine when they hear the word windmill?

SO MUCH THIS!!

I have such a bee in my bonnet about pylons! I loathe them. They look bloody awful, ruin the view and the landscape. Why can’t the lines go underground like in France?!

The reason nobody minds them now is because people are used to them - but they look shit!

I don’t mind wind farms but don’t like to see solar farms, though I accept it as a necessary thing, solar panels on roofs I think are fine, though ideally at the back of houses. But pylons are the worst!!

etulosba · 13/04/2022 10:47

There isn’t such an urgent need because UK pylons don’t frighten children, unlike the ones in France.

@etulosba

Ooo he’s rather grand!

Lemonyfuckit · 13/04/2022 14:29

I think they're rather elegant actually, and certainly nicer looking than a coal powered power plant belching out smoke. So no issues at all with more wind turbines being built, whether on or off shore (and I say that as someone who does live pretty near to some).

Lemonyfuckit · 13/04/2022 14:30

@Dilbertian

They're less of a blot of the landscape than power stations!
Exactly!
Whatwillbewilbe · 13/04/2022 14:45

I love wind turbines and I think they’re beautiful. I could spend hours watching them working, it’s so relaxing. Pylons don’t bother me at all, I barely notice them.

toomanytwinkies · 13/04/2022 14:46

I think windmills (the new type not the traditional Dutch type) look so futuristic! It’s almost like they belong in a film set in the year 2100! I personally love them and think pylons are awful dated metal monstrosities- why they can’t make new modern looking pylons I’ll never know.

toomanytwinkies · 13/04/2022 14:47

Ah yes that’s the proper word - wind turbines! I knew windmills didn’t sound right but couldn’t work out why.

Boood · 13/04/2022 14:56

Especially when they are on big, bleak expanses of moorland where everything is on a grand scale, I think wind turbines look majestic. They enhance the landscape rather than detract from it. It would be different if they were plonked in smaller-scale, streams and flowers and woodland-type environments, but I don’t think that happens.

I think they look great!
