To think that playing your music out loud in public shouldn't be tolerated?

Since I moved to London, I've noticed it's really common for people to play their music out loud in public. I've experienced this in hospital waiting rooms, when having a picnic by a river, in parks, on the bus, on residential streets... It just strikes me as hugely presumptuous to assume everyone wants to hear your music. Why can't people use headphones? What if I were to play my music loudly over the top of theirs? Why do people even do this? Music is highly subjective - you can't assume others will enjoy what you're listening to.

I've noticed it's normally tolerated by others, however, so am I the one who's being unreasonable here? Or is everyone just cursing in their head but we're too passive aggressive as a nation to actually say anything?

@whyohehy

I have always assumed that people who do this are a bit thick so tend to ignore it for that reason.
Agree with the thick bit. Badly raised and/or too thick to work out of themselves.

Garden cinemas should be on your list too, annoying as fuck
Yes this!!!! In fact the whole ‘make your garden just like an extra room in your house’ movement can fuck off

Out door cinemas
Huge blue tooth speakers
Outdoor bars
Hot tubs

All of it can get in the sea. Your garden doesn’t have brick or concrete walls around and above it & your neighbours to not want to be forced to hear your cinema, shrieky hot tub party or your music

And breathe

I hate it, I find it really disorienting too. So selfish. Also hate people who have conversations on loudspeaker in public places.
Me too!

@Laiste

YANBU and all the above.

Does anyone remember the massive stereo/radio things that youngsters would carry around on their shoulders during the 80s? Down the street and in the parks ect. I was a teen and it still annoyed me!

Yes

Do you remember the Star Trek film when Spock does his grip on the offender with the ghetto blaster on a busSmile

Antarcticant · 11/04/2022 18:08

We had this in a park a couple of weeks ago - a couple of young women drinking and playing music from a phone. It was particularly annoying as they were just playing bits of 'songs' (term used loosely) - like channel-hopping on the TV. It would have been less irritating (but still annoying) if they were playing entire tracks.

Electrox · 11/04/2022 18:11

It's anti-social, selfish and intrusive. I hate not being able to escape someone else's choice of music.

These are infinitely, infinitely worse than someone playing rubbish music on a train, and that is bad enough.

I’ve not encountered these in the wild, but saw it on a garden makeover programme and my blood ran cold. Imagine being in the garden and hearing a bloody film going. Amplified dialogue, laughter, explosions - definitely worse and harder to tune out than music or people talking.

I do have to have loudspeaker conversations sometimes as I use a crutch and can't hold the phone to my ear with the other hand. So you can carry on hating.
LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 11/04/2022 18:12

I’m not sure the problem is people being passive aggressive. It’s reasonable to assume that people who are inconsiderate with their music are likely to be anti social in general, and not everyone can afford to deal with an abusive or potentially violent person.

I had a complete Hyacinth Bucket moment on holiday last year.

There's a beach we love in Dorset which we go to when we've had enough of the sand/ice cream/bags of stuff/motor boat beach days. It's down a quiet toll road, field car park, climb down the cliff path so can't carry much, no ice cream vans, no cafe, stony beach. The idea was to simply sit on a towel, have a coffee out of a flask and stare out to sea, maybe paddle and just enjoy the tranquility. More binoculars there usually than bucket and spades.

We sit down and relax. And bugger me along comes a bunch of *unts with their music blaring and plonk down just near us Hmm Miles of beach and there they are!

DD (7) says ''why do they have to have it so loud?'' [music]

And i look at them and say in this booming voice ''Because they seem to assume we aaaaall want to hear their BLOODY music all afternoon''.

Shock

It came out of no where!

.....
The music went right down.
I got a thumbs up from another group of people.

But i felt really self conscious for the rest of the time there Hmm

It drives me insane. It is so rude and inconsiderate. I wouldn't dream of subjecting other people to our music. I have been tempted to play some revenge Schoenberg or Hindemith at full volume at 6 in the morning into little darling next-door's bedroom window. She's got the loudest playlist I have ever heard and sings along with it (badly). I have recorded her and might just name and shame her on the local Facebook page. Grin. That'll learn her.

I’d say yes if an adult but speak to parents in this case?

Didn’t know garden cinema was a thing. The world is horrendously noisy. I find it really hard to cope.

dancinfeet · 11/04/2022 18:41

Also applies to people letting kids watch peppa pig or similar shite on a tablet or phone without headphones in restaurants/ cafes / on trains. My kids are 17 and 22 and these days I have zero tolerance for the racket that is CBeebies type programmes. Earphones or off should be the only two options.

Hummingbirdcake · 11/04/2022 18:44

I think it’s inconsiderate but I sort of don’t mind if it’s music I like.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 11/04/2022 18:46

It's appallingly rude. The people who do it are the sort of people who you would never challenge because you know they are awful unhinged people who only care about themselves.

raspberryjamchicken · 11/04/2022 18:51

It's also one of the worst things about camping. Most people on campsites are considerate about noise but wherever I go there ends up being just one group who blare out music day and night. Last summer someone eventually complained to the warden at 11pm and the rest of us were then subjected to them shouting loudly about f-ing party poppers spoiling the fun.

IggysPop · 11/04/2022 18:54

@dancinfeet

Yeah - I have noticed this too. I asked a parent to turn iPad Peppa Pig in a hotel at breakfast earlier this year. They said ‘no’ because it had to be that loud so that it could be heard above the ‘babble’ of conversation in the restaurant, and they would turn it down when people spoke quieter. Luckily the other table joined-in and they turned it down (muttering about us ruining LO’s holiday).

Phos · 11/04/2022 18:54

It is selfish and should be unacceptable but the sad truth of the matter is those who do this are the same ones who'd give you an earful of abuse if you ask them to stop so it's not worth it.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 11/04/2022 18:55

Yes very selfish. We were on holiday in Devon last week. Lovely beach, but fairly small and people quite close together. Family there with their music blaring out. Just why?

Yes I was going to mention this too.

Why is noise pollution so acceptable these days.

Yes my boss at work has a garden cinema. And she does garden bonfires. She is a really lovely lady at work and I really enjoy working for her. But I would hate to be her next door neighbour! Or maybe I'd just join in...

trulyconfuseddotcom · 11/04/2022 19:01

Yes to all this. And also on aeroplanes - either people watching stuff/listening to music without headphones or letting their kids watch Peppa Pig or play noisy games. So unbelievably inconsiderate and selfish - just put some bloody headphones on and stop inflicting your personal entertainment on everyone else stuck in the seats all around you!

Yes sadly this is true. Although I have on occasion told Mr Having Very Important Confidential Conversation in the quiet carriage of the train to wait until he got to Waterloo. He wasn't very happy but he did shut up. Same with the one who decided to play through every ringtone on his phone on Eurostar when I had a headache.
yellowsuninthesky · 11/04/2022 19:04

Although I did see an amazing revenge idea on here last year. This is for noisy garden parties and the like. Recruit some 6 year olds to a "recorder orchestra" and let them perform in your garden at 6am the night after a loud party Grin

StCharlotte · 11/04/2022 19:05

And it is without exception the most SHIT music.
