100% 1st World Problem here... but I need to know if I'm BU to paint an entire room including ceiling in a dark shade?
In my head, I can see the finished result but I'm nervous. I haven't told my family or friends because they'd try to put off (very traditional tastes)
The room will be used as a "grown-ups" sitting room.
Anyone else done this?

Have you got photos of rooms you like? What size is your room and which way does it face?

BoodleBug51 · 11/04/2022 15:02

If it's a big room or has a high ceiling you'll get away with it?

In a small room, it may feel like the inside of a cardboard box..............

We went for a bold dark paint in our dining room with an off white ceiling and it's my favourite room in the house.

SunscreenCentral · 11/04/2022 15:20

The room gets morning light, and it shifts around to where we mostly live after that @HollowTalk

@BoodleBug51 It's decent sized - not huge by any mean, but certainly nowhere near box either.
There's room for a fireplace, large 2/3 seater sofa & 2 armchairs.
The idea of painting the ceiling is apparently (!!!) to play with perception as when we enter a room the human eye finds the delineation immediately as we scope out a space. That's where wall meets ceiling.... This is the theory.

Still shitting myself at thought of a dark green ceiling tho Grin

Do it.
Having said that I’m about to change my blue lounge as I’m tired of it and always needing to put lights on in the daytime.

hangrylady · 11/04/2022 15:54

I would only ever paint a ceiling white. Maybe I'm behind the times but that pic to me looks really gloomy. Fine for wall to be darker though.

RunnerDuck2020 · 11/04/2022 15:58

I think it would be a bit too dark with the ceiling painted a dark colour as well!

Anomalocaris · 11/04/2022 16:00

Go for it. If you don't like you can just paint several coats over it!

RubyRedBerry · 11/04/2022 16:07

Have a look on Instagram, lots of rooms painted in one dark shade on there. I've seen a few with green/ grey ceilings, pale walls too.
I think it would depend on the natural light of a room, if you don't have much, small windows, North facing etc then I would give it a miss.

Allsorts1 · 11/04/2022 16:12

Do it! It will look fab. Coloured ceilings are having a big moment. I’ve also seen a dusty pink ceiling with dark walls, if all dark is too scary. Go bold though!! You can always go back. YOLO etc

Rubyupbeat · 11/04/2022 16:16

Much to gloomy for me.

DeedlessIndeed · 11/04/2022 16:18

I think the whole dark academia look works best in rooms with high ceilings. Otherwise I do think it makes rooms a tad squat.

Pamlar · 11/04/2022 16:21

Absolutely do it.
It will look amazing.
Worst case you can paint over it immediately or in few years. But my bet is that you'll love it.
We have a bold wallpapered ceiling and everyone thought we were crazy. It looks so good am planning to do the gloomy stairwell in a forest/jungle print.
Again worst case, I can strip it and repaint

DeedlessIndeed · 11/04/2022 16:21

We have a pinky-mushroomy colour on a lot of our ceilings and love it. I think it creates cosy feeling in rooms with a high ceiling. It works great paired with light neutrals or dark jewel wall colours. Cornice is white throughout though.

Pamlar · 11/04/2022 16:22

Also you can add mirrors to increase and obv reflect light if you're worried about it being too dark

singlepringlenotbychoice · 11/04/2022 16:24

I have a large south facing bedroom and it's painted black on all walls. Ceiling is still white as I don't want to regret painting it black and have to cover it and there 2 windows letting in a fair amount of light.

Filled with dark furniture, bedding and accessories. It looks amazing. A real feature room and atmospheric without being oppressive. I love it and im glad I chose to do it

Fedupbuyer · 11/04/2022 16:26

I have done our living in dark walls, black skirting boards/architrave,black radiator, off white ceiling though as we don’t have high ones.

RobbieWeirdicht · 11/04/2022 16:29

Unless you are Marvin the Paranoid Android I'd go for something slightly cheerier.

If you are Marvin the Paranoid Android crack on!

thefootballcoacheswife · 11/04/2022 16:45

I like a coloured ceiling.

DressingPafe · 11/04/2022 16:53

I have high ceilings and when I first moved in years ago I painted them white, huge job and obviously needed redoing a few years later. That time I decided to go with coloured, although they are lighter shades than the walls. I like them so much better and they're lasting much longer.

I say go for it, what's the worst that can happen? Paint can always be painted over, even if takes 10 coats!

SunscreenCentral · 11/04/2022 16:59

The ceiling is higher than average and there's a (too) huge picture window.... restored antique fireplace being installed tomorrow.
This is the room I've been waiting 20+ years for, a room of my own.

Screw it, it's only paint. If it's awful, it can be done over. Right?? 😬

Do it. It's only paint, you can change it if you don't like it.

Shiningpath · 11/04/2022 18:14

Anyone else done this?

Only about 60% of middle class urbanites…so far.

It’s reaching ubiquity like grey a couple of years ago. Unless you really like it, be wary of it dating quickly since it’s so trend-based.

No judgement though, I’ve done this in two rooms and it looks good. However be wary of touch ups. The dark colours can fade terribly, especially with big windows so even after six to nine months your original colour might not match. And somehow black seems to pick up as many scuffs as white. So don’t assume it’s low maintenance like this total mug who now has to repaint a three storey hall annually
