What were DS (9) and DS (7) doing outside at 2.30am?

My DSs aged 9&7 are in serious trouble this morning. Background: our front door is set back from the road and the house is long and narrow along the road. DSs bedroom (shared by their own choice) is at one end almost above the front door.

Last night at 2.30am the door bell camera caught the pair of them going out of the front door and walking round to the front of the house, I would guess to approximately where their bedroom window on the front of the house is, before coming back in about 30 seconds later (staying inside the front garden, so nowhere near the road or pavement). They were empty handed so if they’d thrown or droppedsomething out of the window they didn’t find it. They claim they ‘wanted some fresh air’Hmm

I don’t know if it’s connected, but they were already in trouble because when it came to handing over their chrome books at bedtime, they told me they couldn’t find them (not unusual) but then I caught them using them under the bed covers.

What the hell were they up to????!

@DramaLlamaAlwaysLaughs

Didn’t you ask them what they were doing? Followed by a lecture about the dangers, then a series of restrictions until they grew up and weren’t so bloody stupid
They’re young children. They don’t need to grow up.

@Murdoch1949

Divide and conquer. Interrogate them separately, compare their stories. You need to find the truth, then up your home security! Little buggers could have been on the milk train to Tangier by the time you woke up.
On the milk train to Tangier by the time I woke up?? Not sure where yours leaves from, but it’s definitely more than a minutes walk from my front door

They probably just thought they were being really daring.

I suggest you RTFT.

I never did anything like that when I was a child.

I was allowed to camp out in the garden all night on warm nights though, as long as the dog (German Shepherd) came with me.

I bloody loved it, just me and the dog, and I could read (by torchlight) for hours without anyone telling me I had to go to sleep.

FourChimneys · 11/04/2022 22:37

When discussing a wayward child my DM once said "When you and DSibling were children we always knew exactly where you were."

Hmm, no she didn't, we got up to all sorts of harmless mischief.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/04/2022 22:44

They were having an adventure, surely.

Suggest a midnight feast in the garden is a safer option for next time.

Ohyesiam · 11/04/2022 22:45

What they were doing is being kids. Very cute and not much to worry about unless you live in Brixton.

Hollywolly1 · 11/04/2022 23:01

Ah bless them they sound adorable, I suppose after explaining its not safe for them to do that they won't do it again

Koigarden · 11/04/2022 23:02

I’ve no idea but don’t you lock your doors at night!

Not sure there’s much to worry about even if they were in Brixton.

Did all manner of silly things like this. When i was 8 lived in a small village, me and my friends wanted to see what the bird watching hut was like in the middle of the night. It was in the Middle of nowhere, and you had to navigate railway tracks and a small stream, anyhow we got scared before we hit the end of the street and ran back home!
When i was 10 we lived in a big corner house, was spooky as hell because one side overlooked a very old cemetery and the other a old disused prison (historic town) me and another friend spent an entire summer sneaking out of the house at "the witching hour" to see if we could see any ghosts 🤦‍♀️. We got caught once by a security guard at the prison - part of it was a small Museum and they were doing their evening rounds. Luckily my parents were out and my sister was Looking after us and she found it hilarious and didn't grass us up! Didn't stop us though, even in the middle of the day we were generally up to mischief, we once walked 5 miles to explore a castle, and we frequently found ourselves in old abandoned buildings. I was born in the 80s. In my defense we did read alot of enid Blyton and goosebumps

Ehhh kids can easily unlock a door
knowinglesseveryday · 12/04/2022 11:25

Chrome books handed over nightly and put in a locked drawer, I'd say. Then they wouldn't be awake, probably.

As clearly stated in the op, the chromes books ARE taken away nightly, but that particular evening they claimed they couldn’t find them. Even so, I confiscated them at around 9pm so I’m not sure how that has any bearing on them being awake at 2.30.

I’m fascinated by how many of you went out in the middle off the night. I don’t recall ever being awake at that kind of time unless it was Christmas Eve! I love a good sleep. 😆 have climbed out of windows during the day and done other stuff considered risky. Obvs once 15or so one got up to stuff at night. But not as a child. Midnight feasts generally meant me sitting sleepily propped up while one big sister doled out the goodies. But being was enough for it to be ‘mdnight’

maybloss2 · 12/04/2022 18:23

Being dark!

Toponeniceone · 12/04/2022 18:32

I'd put an end to the shared bedroom. They are being a bad influence on each other.

mangipops · 12/04/2022 19:02

Would definitely insist they say what they were doing - very real possibility they were talking to a strange online who told them to come out - I would not rule this out- could be someone 'testing' or could be perfectly innocent on the children's part but they are so young.

pinkpantherpink · 12/04/2022 19:32

Clearly decided to go on an adventure. Presume one encouraged the other... Cheeky blighters

Seriously what harm has been done?

Notmrsfitz · 12/04/2022 19:56

I’m a mum of 3 grown up boys and I will suggest they were ‘being adventurous’ - mine did it, it’s a bit of bravado - they’ve probably dated each other and really egged it up.

They’ve been caught, they know they can’t do it without being caught and so I think it’s done with now and it’s just boys stretching boundaries being dare devils etc.?

Bbq1 · 12/04/2022 20:13

@sweetbellyhigh

It's pretty cute really. I mean every kid needs to have some childhood adventures. I would be straight faced and form with them but you have to keep that footage for when they are older.

I had a similar thing this weekend. Woke up with a sense something was wrong and my 14yo was gone. Eventually found him, 2am, skateboarding...

And you weren't concerned? That's not normal teenage behaviour to be out skateboarding at 2am - at 14! I very much doubt that your ds was skateboarding as he claims. It's pitch black then...
NotTheOW · 12/04/2022 20:18

@Georgeskitchen

Back in the day I would have said its kids on a dare However these days of instant communication I would be looking a little deeper just to check they aren't communicating with someone dodgy
I agree with this
dworky · 12/04/2022 20:22

Don't be ridiculous Bbq1, most of the UK has streetlighting and even without, it's not pitch black every night.
Honestly, the nonsense some people post, on here!
