To be mildly shocked at DF only insuring one twin on car?

Partyrocks · 10/04/2022 14:19

DF* has 18yo twin girls.

The both passed the driving test within a week of each other. And grandparents have bought a Car for them to share.

As insurance is so expensive, DF and her DH and the grandparents made a decision to just insure one daughter. With the thinking that if anything happened to the uninsured one it'll all be fine as they'll be able to pretend that they're the insured one.

The girls are going to same University and taking the car.

The girls are fully aware and a literal coin was tossed to decide which one would be It.

AIBU to think this is not on?

FFS totally illegal and invalidates the insurance for both of them!

Member984815 · 10/04/2022 14:22

It's fraud

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 10/04/2022 14:23

And if the worst happened? Amy would have to become Anna for the rest of her life.

VyeBrator · 10/04/2022 14:23

Daft

Everydayimhuffling · 10/04/2022 14:25

It's fraud and deeply stupid to do something that will invalidate the insurance if they are caught. What if the wrong one ends up in hospital after a crash? Is she going to lie and mess up the medical notes too?

Moodycow78 · 10/04/2022 14:25

What if one ended up in hospital and had treatment under the name of the other. That could have serious implications in the future.

Jadecarrot · 10/04/2022 14:25

Honestly! What if the uninsured one died in a crash. They would have to swap identity. It doesn't bare thinking about.

iklboo · 10/04/2022 14:26

That's ludicrous.

finebutfedup · 10/04/2022 14:26

If they clip a bollard then that’s one thing.
But what if there’s a horrible accident where somebody is severely injured or even killed?

That is a very, very, very bad idea.

NellNorth · 10/04/2022 14:27

If they have a serious accident which leads to criminal charges, the named driver just has to suck it up? This could lead to catastrophic family fall out.
I know a family where the younger brother sat the older brother’s driving test, as he couldn’t make it on the day. He passed, and the older one got his license. When the younger one turned 17, he failed it twice, and it lead to all sorts of tension.

Partyrocks · 10/04/2022 14:27

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints

And if the worst happened? Amy would have to become Anna for the rest of her life.
Bloody hell I hadn't even thought of that. Shock

What if one died.

SausagePourHomme · 10/04/2022 14:28

i'm utterly confused as to who DF, her DH and the grandparents are.

Anyway - it would be fraud, obviously. also driving without insurance even if there's no accident. the consequences could be bad - criminal record bad. not worth the risk of affecting the rest of these girl's lives

dipdye · 10/04/2022 14:28

That's awful!

And not just illegal

dipdye · 10/04/2022 14:29

What other twin scams have they come up with?

GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 10/04/2022 14:29

It's completely fraudulent and teaching their children it's OK to lie.

Partyrocks · 10/04/2022 14:30

Unfortunately not really someone I'm close enough to to get involved and point out the pitfalls, just someone I sit in a group with while we watch the DC do a hobby twice a week.

She has said in the past when anecdotalling that "they're the same genetic person obviously".

Jesus. Are people seriously this stupid?

Thepaintedgarden · 10/04/2022 14:35

It's also not double (or anywhere near it) to insure 2 new drivers on the same car. We have two drivers in their first year and to add the second was a lot less.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 10/04/2022 14:36

I went to school with a pair of identical twins. They both did things as the other twin to work to everyone’s advantage including one sitting the others driving test and one sitting the others A Level Biology exam. Shocking, but they got away with it and are now both late 30s with no consequences having come back to bite them that I know of.

finebutfedup · 10/04/2022 14:37

I think seeing as she has told you about it, and seeing how dreadful it could be, saying something along the lines of:

“I’ve been thinking about the car insurance issue we discussed last week. If the uninsured twin causes an accident, would the insured one take criminal record, fine and possibly prison sentence on her sister’s behalf? The alternative would be owning up, where the guilty twin is convicted not only of the offence but also driving uninsured”.

It really could be ruinous, they could both be banned at the very least.

fairislecable · 10/04/2022 14:38

I have identical twin daughters and they were both insured to drive my car, they were hit head on by a huge lorry on the wrong side of the road.

They both needed hospital treatment and one of them had two nights in hospital.

I had to take the driving license to the police station to show validity.

Fortunately they were OK but I dread to think what the ramifications would have been if we had attempted to fiddle the insurance.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/04/2022 14:40

This is unbelievable.

Georgeskitchen · 10/04/2022 14:41

There are so many things wrong with this. I sincerely hope they come to their senses

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/04/2022 14:41

Please pay the extra. If the uninsured twin accidentally kills someone, it could ruin their life. They’d be millions in debt forever and go to prison for a very long time.
