To be mildly shocked at DF only insuring one twin on car?

DF* has 18yo twin girls.

The both passed the driving test within a week of each other. And grandparents have bought a Car for them to share.

As insurance is so expensive, DF and her DH and the grandparents made a decision to just insure one daughter. With the thinking that if anything happened to the uninsured one it'll all be fine as they'll be able to pretend that they're the insured one.

The girls are going to same University and taking the car.

The girls are fully aware and a literal coin was tossed to decide which one would be It.

AIBU to think this is not on?

Very very stupid. You need to put your foot down as one of your DDs will be driving without insurance. Your uninsured DD could find herself in any number of horrible scenarios - eg, picking up points which go on sister's licence, being pulled over for something minor and having to lie about identity or confess to driving without a licence - both crimes. And if she is involved in accident the outcome could be catastrophic

If I these were my DDs I would refuse to let them have the car unless both are insured. It is a poisoned chalice and grandparents should not be putting them in this position.

But identical twins are only identical at the point they become twins, by the time they're born DNA has already started to mutate so although they will share more DNA than other siblings they won't have identical DNA samples. They also don't have identical finger prints for example.

As PP have mentioned as well as being illegal and invalidating any insurance either holds its clearly mortally questionable too and could have very very serious repercussions.

BoredZelda · 10/04/2022 14:43

FFS totally illegal and invalidates the insurance for both of them!

The insurance for the insured twin won’t be invalidated.

woodhill · 10/04/2022 14:44

Absolutely bonkers

Could you pay to insure the other twin on the policy yourself?

NotTheOW · 10/04/2022 14:45

@Partyrocks

Unfortunately not really someone I'm close enough to to get involved and point out the pitfalls, just someone I sit in a group with while we watch the DC do a hobby twice a week.

She has said in the past when anecdotalling that "they're the same genetic person obviously".

I'm so confused. Are these not anything to do with you? Or is your dad paying for one of your daughter's insurance and not the other?
Cascais · 10/04/2022 14:47

Who is DF?

Partyrocks · 10/04/2022 14:48

Just spotted typo in OP!

DF (DEAR FRIEND) has 18yo twins.

Nothing to do with me, someone I sit with watching children perform a hobby.
Many apologies

The assumption is that they might have a little prang but if they had a serious accident it wouldn't hold up, would it? If the uninsured woman was driving then there would be serious consequences and it would all come out right away. There could be medical issues.
Not to mention - is the other twin happy to pretend to have caused a serious accident for her sister? To have maybe really hurt someone else, killed them? Lose her licence, take the points etc?
Mad idea.
If only one woman has insurance then she'll have to do the driving.

AtomicBlondeRose · 10/04/2022 14:50

If one of them kills someone in an accident being uninisured is surely the least of their worries at that point?

Imtryingveryhard · 10/04/2022 14:51

@Blossomtoes

Jesus. Are people seriously this stupid?
I work in the insurance fraud industry and you will be amazed what people do to either save money, or get a payout. And how easy it is to trip them up and secure a fundamental dishonesty finding that will ruin their careers and financial standing for life. All for a few hundred/thousand £. It’s shameful.
viques · 10/04/2022 14:52

Do they get alternate year birthday presents and Christmas presents? Do they only get one meal when they go round to grandparents? What have the gp written into their wills?

The car insurance idea is both bonkers and illegal. One of them could end up dead or injured as others have said, or with points on their licence, or having to take speeding fines and speeding awareness courses for the other one. . And what if they injured or killed another person ?

SoupDragon · 10/04/2022 14:52

They’d be millions in debt forever

They wouldn't.

Threetulips · 10/04/2022 14:52

I agree the insured driver would be fined for speeding or the uninsured one in an accident.

Besides it isn’t that much more as only one at a time can drive anyway

I Think DF is friend not father. Why would you insure a friends DC
FOJN · 10/04/2022 14:53

Even if neither has an accident and the fraud goes undetected it means one of the twins is not building up their "no claims".

viques · 10/04/2022 14:53

It will if they try to claim for an accident caused by the uninsured twin.
SoupDragon · 10/04/2022 14:54

It's a bloody stupid idea. Even leaving aside the illegal nature of it, there are so many pitfalls!

AAAaaaah makes sense now. Your friend is an idiot.
Ellie56 · 10/04/2022 14:58

They really haven't thought this through have they?

Confused
Luckyelephant1 · 10/04/2022 15:00

Aside from what everyone has already said about it being a stupid idea, if you aren't even close to this DF why is she telling you? Is she telling the whole world as well? Very stupid.

PrescriptionOnlyMedicine · 10/04/2022 15:01

You are being unreasonable to be only mildly shocked 😳

This is illegal and immoral. Your friend is an idiot.

BacardiOnATuesday · 10/04/2022 15:01

In the event of a serious accident they would have to remember who they were supposed to be! Unlikely to do that when stressed or injured!

erinaceus · 10/04/2022 15:03

If they are both in the car and there is an accident, the insurer will quite quickly figure out that there are twins involved. All round this is a bizarre idea.

bluebaul · 10/04/2022 15:03

As insurance is so expensive, DF and her DH and the grandparents made a decision to just insure one daughter.

Well having just recently sat their driving tests it's safe to assume the twins know it is their responsibility to be insured before they drive any vehicle. So what the parents/grandparents decide is irrelevant. If the uninsured twin drives the car they are fully responsible for taking that decision and for any repercussions.
