To wonder what makes an area “posh”?

Just came back from a friend’s house in a very leafy suburb of West Midlands city. She loves talking about how posh it is where lives but I asked her what does it mean to live in a posh area? How do you know it’s posh? She couldn’t really answer my question and the area was very average.

How do you define a “posh” area?

@mycatisannoying

A very low proportion of free school meals at the local school.
This is degorstory comment and judgemental. Its below the line FFS humble yourself.

My neighbour has a moat.

JennyForeigner · 09/04/2022 06:59

Here in Nottingham they closed the Waitrose. Condemned us to years of non-poshness at a stroke 🤣

custardbear · 09/04/2022 06:59

Lol indeed @NotMeNoNo Grin

Speaking of Surrey, I was in Haslemere about 3 years ago and noticed the High Street adorned with many mature, neatly clipped, bay trees bought as street furniture. Realised immediately that I was somewhere that I didn't belong where the council tax would make me cry.

Fridafever · 09/04/2022 07:12

Plenty of McDonald’s near the queen phew!

To wonder what makes an area “posh”?
RedHelenB · 09/04/2022 07:18

They do where I live and it definitely wouldnt be described as posh.

Bluebluemoon · 09/04/2022 07:20

Where I live is "posh" - some of the things that spring to mind are:

Local supermarkets are M&S, Waitrose and Sainsburys. We do have a Lidl and Tesco not too far away.
Lots of nice cafes and restaurants
Boutique-y style clothing and homeware shops
Many celebrities/actors/sports people live round here
I feel very safe walking around at night - very low crime
Very leafy roads, very clean etc.
If we hear something late at night like a shout or a firework everyone jumps a mile and stares at one another and says "what the hell was that?" 😂 and once or twice a year when you hear someone having a garden party the music is always switched off promptly at 11pm!

This is so on the nose it is hilarious

TrickyD · 09/04/2022 07:25

Absence of social housing

RampantIvy · 09/04/2022 07:25

nearly everyone has a garden waste bin

We pay our council tax to Barnsley council, and everyone who has a garden gets a garden waste bin regardless of whether you live in Cawthorne (very posh) or less salubrious parts of Barnsley.

topcat2014 · 09/04/2022 07:29

We are cafes and catchments. Which is so true, given that I walked to work on one of the best comps in the southwest :)

Wheretheskyisblue · 09/04/2022 07:33

Posh = When the majority of residents don't pay tax in the UK, can afford to donate six figure sums to their old private schools and don't know the cost of a loaf of bread.

I did the link, it says of my area:
"Uptown Elite - High status households owning elegant homes in accessible inner suburbs where they enjoy city life in comfort"

Could someone enter in a known deprived area post code and see what it says?

yesterday my 18 year old DS did come home and tell me that he'd walked too close to a man "wearing a hoodie" and the man said "Fuck off" to my son. My DS then realised that the man was peeing, DS was so surprised at that scene he actually said "Sorry! I didn't know you were peeing!" 😂

I think we live very sheltered lives but I wouldn't say we are "posh"

rottiemott · 09/04/2022 07:51

I live near the queen Not a lot of MacDonald’s. Whitehall if she pops down the mall

There's one on Victoria street

There are not that many McDonald’s in central London-

There's loads. What are you classing as many?

Hobbesmanc · 09/04/2022 07:52

Our local designated posh places like Wilmslow,Bramhall Didsbury or Hale Barns are just very expensive with nicer shops and restaurants. Posh equates mainly to money I think.

DigitusImpudicus · 09/04/2022 07:53

@Wheretheskyisblue

Isn't that elite rather than posh?
FatOaf · 09/04/2022 07:54

"Starbucks rather than Costa"
Why? Is there much difference?

Costa tastes nasty. Starbucks doesn't taste of anything. Both are crap. Neither is "posh".

Polyanthus2 · 09/04/2022 07:54

Lots of gated houses.

Octomore · 09/04/2022 07:55

Posh equates mainly to money I think.

Yeah. Are the houses (or flats if in a city centre) big and expensive? Are the shops selling expensive stuff? Are there lots of opportunities for expensive activities (e.g. horse riding, yachting) in the area? Are people sending their kids to expensive schools?

This is all you need to ask.

Fridafever · 09/04/2022 07:56

We are cafes and catchments.

Me too! I don’t know if that counts as posh. I can walk to a McDonalds, a Greg’s and an Asda. My nearest shop is a little Waitrose though. Oh it’s tense working these things out 😬😬😬

cafedesreves · 09/04/2022 07:59

Hmmm I live in a very not posh area of London. My parents live in one which is far more posh, although the wonderful thing about London is that wherever you live there will be people from a range of backgrounds.
If our area was to gentrify and become more posh, the following would need to happen:

  • fewer chicken shops and betting shops
  • independent cafes and nice restaurants (although in some posh areas like Highgate it's disappointingly chainy)
  • fewer mattresses etc. dumped around
Fridafever · 09/04/2022 08:00

Also our street is covered in cars as nobody has drives but the cars are pretty fancy. There’s a Porsche outside my house at the moment and a Tesla (neither are mine).
