Yes jumpingbeans! Do you live there? Or been as a visitor?

GooseyLoosey · 09/01/2008 09:10

Recently went to a 60s themed party full of 40+ year olds in mini dresses. It was wrong on so many levels.

Fortunately I had not spent any time poring over the invitation so had completely missed the fact it was fancy dress. Did I feel out of place? No, I felt smug.

jumpingbeans · 09/01/2008 09:13

JingleyJen · 09/01/2008 09:14

M&D had a 60's fancydress party for their 60th birthdays everyone dressed up except for DH He doesn't do fancy dress under any circumstances. He was relaxed and comfortable in his own clothes.
Lots of groovy things going on.

LL - the disco ball women clearly has far too much time on her hands.... and far too much talent - tis not fair, it should be shared around more fairly.

DD has yet to learn that I am crap at thinking of FD, sewing for FD and far too tight to buy FD..

For her first FD I dressed her up as a hockey player, it took all of about 5 mins to find a poloshirt, pleated skirt and long socks and head band and told her to hold her stick (she was about 2 I think)...

Luckily enough since then she has only ever wanted to go as a fairy/princess so have a dressing up box sorted...

The Blue is my favourite pub in the whole world. I always think about being in there when I'm having a smear to take my mind off the very cold speculum and the poking around .

Were you there this year?

Heifer · 09/01/2008 09:17

god no - my pants would be fair too large! and really do not want DD pants pinned on me (However clean)....

Heifer · 09/01/2008 09:17

meant DH pants (DD pants would be wrong on so many levels)..

surfer, no, not this year we went to london to see the fireworks a bit of a let let, expectation to high i think, next year, polperro - did you stay in one of the little cotts on the warren - i love them - i think we have nearly stayed in them all now, my dream is to stay in that big house overlooking the harbour with loads of friends, we call it bates house (as in norman!!)

Surfermum · 09/01/2008 09:32

We've stayed in the Warren a couple of times, in Terrills and the one next door. I love waking up and seeing the harbour - and the Blue!

There were 14 of us, we stayed in a house up Landaviddy Lane just opposite the little lane down to the Mill House. Everyone had such a fab time I think we'll deffo be going back next year.

jumpingbeans · 09/01/2008 09:38

surfer, maybe i will see you there, i will be the one staggering from the blue to the naughts and then back to the blue

Surfermum · 09/01/2008 09:39

We stayed for a week and didn't make it to the Crumplehorn as it was too far to walk .

moondog · 09/01/2008 09:43

Oh God yes,how fucking tedious.
Someone on MN (JanH,where the hell is she?) said parties are only for kids and singletons. Dead right. The only people that like them are blokes who want to wear women's underwear (ie 90% of all blokes).

My only positive memories of fancy dress are one about 15 years ago. Dh dressed as a padre (professional gear) and loved it so much he wore it the next day. There was a guy there dressed as a mussel (shellfish) too who couldn't wee all night as he had been glued into his huge shell which encased his entire body from the thigh up.

onebatmother · 09/01/2008 10:11

he really should have thought that one through, shouldn't he.

No YA very much NOTBU. They are very wrong.

TsarChasm · 09/01/2008 10:16

YANBU! What a waste of a party when you could dress up in something fabulous.

Instead you have to pretend to be 10 and raid the dc's dressing up box and feel a tit all night

sugarplumfairy · 09/01/2008 12:57

I had a party where we had to go as what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wore my wedding dress and decorated my veil with dummies and babies bottles and went as a wife/mum. At least it was a chance to wear my dress again!

Hulababy · 09/01/2008 13:02

I don't blame you. I don't like dress up for myself. Dh is the same. TBh even 5yo Dd isn't that bothered about it, lol!

twentypence · 10/01/2008 02:53

What would one wear to Saints and Sinners 40th party for 2 gay blokes then?

More importantly what the heck are they going to be wearing?

Botbot · 10/01/2008 08:51

I bloody hate fancy dress parties. Every christmas do my company ever has is fancy dress, and I don't think I've ever dressed up in five years. Actually, I may have put a pair of hideous dangly earrings on for the 80s one, but that's as far as I've ever gone. FFS, I feel uncomfortable enough dressed in normal party clothes.

Yes, I'm a miserable old curmudgeon.

onebatmother · 10/01/2008 12:48

There is too much Fun in the world, it's true, Botbot

Especially Organized Fun. I can't stand the 'Okay, we're going to have fun, guy! And it starts RIGHT Now' thing that underpins all these kind of ludicrousnesses.
