£6k to spend on travel in 12 months

leftphilange · 07/04/2022 16:05

I wish I had this kind is money to spend on travel. After the last couple of years I do feel like I have some travelling to catch up on but it will take time to save the funds.

So, living in a dreamworld for a moment. If you had £6k which had to be spent on travel in the next 12 months what would you do?

A) spend it all on one long haul luxury holiday

B) one family short haul and a few city breaks

C) short city breaks only with no beach style holiday

D) all UK breaks various styles and locations with no need for a passport

We do 3 holidays around, 1 Europe and 2 long haul most years for 6k.
Wait and watch for deals, no school holidays to workaround, flexible work days/time/hours ( I know how lucky we are)
5* every time. If you are smart and wait a good, fab holiday doesn't have to cost a fortune... also helps if you are old and don't have dependant children Smile

If it was just my husband and me, I'd do 2 weeks in Thailand or similar (£2k each), weekend in winter in a log cabin with hot tub (£1k including food etc) and £1k for two flights to Portugal to stay with friends for a week!

I'd also really like to visit friends in Canada and Australia so might spend it all on that!

@Pootle40

Long haul luxury for £6k?! If only.
For 2 people it's doable.

If I had no commitments I would book a one way ticket and go backpacking! Best thing I ever did in my 20s!

A mix of A&B - we did 10 days in LA and Santa Barbara plus 4 day breaks in Stockholm and Palma for that including spending money for 2

Any tips? Newly retired and need a holiday.

A or B.

Ah that was a nice bit of escapism and interesting to see the range of ideas.

I actually thought there may have been a little more interest in the UK option although it seems out weather let's itself down.

It has got me seriously thinking about getting some savings together to bring at least one trip into reality.

I visited Canada in October 2021 and the trip was £7.5k for ten nights (for two people) however that included business class flights to Canada, business class flights domestically in Canada, 5* hotels in cities.

I’d do A all over again.

"Course you can go far if you're not going 5 star AI. It's dirt cheap to stay in places in south east Asia for example, you can get Air bnbs for a tenner a night in countries like Thailand."

OP said luxury.

Is your luxury more luxurious than common luxury or just keyboard competitiveness which is so regular on MN these days that it bores me? Our holiday in March was £3500 and pure luxury from start to finish. 5* All inclusive. The luxurious Maldives holiday we're planning next year will be less than £6k.

My above comment goes for this ridiculous statement too. Are we supposed to think that you only go to £10k a night places? It actually makes me think people that say such things have never been anywhere.

Frankola · 13/04/2022 13:07

We have spent 6k on a family holiday to the Greek Islands for 2 weeks in a 5star luxury resort.

After 2 years of no holiday abroad and having to put up with rubbish UK breaks in the crap weather we were happy to splurge to be honest

mickeypillow · 13/04/2022 13:08

One big holiday. Alaska.

Startuplife · 13/04/2022 13:10

This is roughly what we’ve spent this year and it has covered for two of us -

A week all inclusive in Portugal in July
A long weekend over the Jubilee bank holiday in Malaga
3 nights in Porto
3 nights in Palma

RincewindsHat · 13/04/2022 13:10

E: take advantage of remote working to head off round Europe for a few months, working part time hours & staying in gorgeous rentals for a couple of weeks at a time each before moving on to the next location while exploring the most beautiful places I can find along the way.

I assume from how you've worded C that A means luxury long haul beach holiday in which case it would be C. Beach holidays don't do it for us at all. For us the options would be a series of city breaks or long haul to somewhere like Japan or elsewhere in Asia.
