£6k to spend on travel in 12 months

leftphilange · 07/04/2022 16:05

I wish I had this kind is money to spend on travel. After the last couple of years I do feel like I have some travelling to catch up on but it will take time to save the funds.

So, living in a dreamworld for a moment. If you had £6k which had to be spent on travel in the next 12 months what would you do?

A) spend it all on one long haul luxury holiday

B) one family short haul and a few city breaks

C) short city breaks only with no beach style holiday

D) all UK breaks various styles and locations with no need for a passport

City breaks. I'm doing Riga, Tallinn, Helsinki and Budapest in a 13 day trip in May. Its costing about £500 for flights and accommodation and then whatever I spend. I could do about 16 cities with 6k ✈️

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/04/2022 17:54

If I could have another 1.5k each for the two kids, I'd do a family fortnight away somewhere warm, in the summer, then when they go back to school dh and I would have a long weekend in Barcelona.

I spend a fair bit on Travel every year. For me it's an absolute priority and we do it on a shoe string. Cheaper than holidays in the U.K. too! This year we are going to Italy for a week ( me add 14yo) then Corfu for 2 weeks (me,dh, dd) and then just me on my own to all inclusive to Tunisia for a week.

If I had 6k spare for next year then I would spend £3000 taking my DH to Canada to go on the train across the country. And I would spend £3000 backpacking around India with my 14yo for 4 weeks . In reality we are going to Iceland for 4/5 nights , then Kos for 10 days and to Morocco all inclusive.

I spend about that much per year, travel is very important to me. Usually do one long haul and one short haul holiday for 2 of us, a couple of city breaks.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/04/2022 18:10

@Georgyporky

2 people won't go very far long-haul for £6k. It cost that to go to Egypt for 2 weeks last month !
Course you can go far if you're not going 5 star AI. It's dirt cheap to stay in places in south east Asia for example, you can get Air bnbs for a tenner a night in countries like Thailand.

Definitely not UK. Weather will let you down every time and then it’s ££ to do indoor things.

South Africa is very good value once you get there.

Lineofconcepcion · 07/04/2022 18:21

We did 8 weeks in Australia. Hired the smallest car possible, bought a tent, airbed, sleeping bags and had the most fantastic time. Currently touring Iberia (in a tent most of the time!)

KELLOGSspeck · 07/04/2022 18:23

A and it would be some where like Maldives or Mexico or the Carribean

HomeHomeInTheRange · 07/04/2022 18:26

I’d wait til I could travel without any further hassle and do a 3 week trip to USA West coast: Yosemite, Monterey, beaches, Grand Canyon…

MinglingFlamingo · 07/04/2022 18:28

In a very vague mumsnetty way. We have just booked An option A holiday. Normally it would be option B though.

Option C is ok for one or two trips a year but I'm a country mouse at heart and not that keen on too many city breaks

Option D is ok but due to the British weather it's always a bit shit

WalkingOnSonshine · 07/04/2022 18:29

We’re doing A this year and tying it in with seeing family in Australia. With a toddler, we’re throwing money at it to try and gain a minute semblance of relaxation.

Pre-DC, we often did B.

TreesAtSea · 07/04/2022 18:32

C plus numerous longer trips around the Netherlands. Long-term interest in the country and would love to get to know all parts of it better 🇳🇱

Uncurtailed · 07/04/2022 18:34

I just spent a week in Athens which at £500 for 2 people was a bargain.

I would therefore break the pot down into 4 and take 2 x 2 week holidays and 1 x 2 week holidays over 12-18 months. Some would be budget and one would be a major splurge for somewhere I've always wanted to go (such as Japan?)

Enzbear · 07/04/2022 18:34

A or B.
We've already done A and will be doing B as well this year because it's only the two of us and no school holidays.
Our A cost £3500
A week half board in the med is costing £1100
City break, not booked yet, probably £800

DSGR · 07/04/2022 18:36

A

whysotriggered · 07/04/2022 18:41

I was looking up luxury holidays for the summer holidays and everything was so expensive! So sadly £6k won't get you much especially as my kids became adults over lockdown, lol. But if I could it would definitely be option A, I really want guaranteed good food, warm weather and somewhere which is nothing like home and basically the UK, I really need a change of scenery.

PaperTyger · 07/04/2022 18:53

One long haul and several smaller breaks in Europe

NeedleNoodle3 · 07/04/2022 18:57

I have recently done A (Caribbean and Bahamas cruise from Miami) so I’d pick B. I think booking a few trips would be fun and they can all be different from one another. I love a winter city break in a hotel with a spa so I’d include one of those.

Pootle40 · 07/04/2022 18:58

Long haul luxury for £6k?! If only.

Mushrooms0up · 07/04/2022 19:00

That’s roughly this years budget (not been anywhere for ages!) and we’re doing:
Seville city break in April
A week in Majorca in the summer
New York and Iceland in December

KELLOGSspeck · 07/04/2022 19:03

@Pootle40

Long haul luxury for £6k?! If only.
I did Domician Republic for 2 weeks AL it was paradise... stayed next door to the Royalton Hotel. Our restaurant shut so we ate at the Royalton some evenings and we used the beach and pool facilities I reckon you could get 4 adults at that price. I guess not Bahamas or Barbados and yes Maldives.... don't be a killjoy Smile
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 07/04/2022 19:26

There’s five of us and all kids are school age so it would have to be a short haul holiday and possibly some city breaks. But I’d be more than happy with that, we haven’t had a family holiday since 2017.

CastleCrasher · 07/04/2022 19:28

Pre-dc it would be as many city and off the beaten track type breaks as possible.

Now, probably more realistic to do one higher end sun holiday Smile

Pootle40 · 07/04/2022 19:44

Not trying to being a killjoy @KELLOGSspeck just realistic.

We're paying £8k for family of four to Turkey in July. It is top end hotel but it's not long haul!

beguilingeyes · 07/04/2022 19:54

It's been a long-standing ambition to go to Japan, so I'd probably do that. Or somewhere else in the far East. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos.
