Do you remember your childs firsts?

Inspired by another thread but only because its the latest in a number of "missed babys first X" posts which has got me thinking...

My kids are adults now (only just) and I basically remember none of their firsts. I remember how old they were when they took their first steps and what their first word was but I don't actually remember the events even though I was there for all of them.

I do remember the first time eldest got the hang of walking and was going as fast as he could giggling with sheer delight and I remember the first time youngest said a swear word because his great grandma taught it to him! I remember lots of moments like that (although not as many with youngest, TBH that was all just a bit of a blur) ... but their "firsts"... nope...

I just don't think it was that memorable to be honest, those things tend to be a bit ill-defined. Like they sofa walk and kind of take a step and it just evolves from that. Or they babble and kind of say mama but you cant be sure its intentional and then one day it clearly is, but you cant pick which bit of babble was the true first word. I think this is partly why I don't remember and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I just wondered if this was just me?

I have a 23 year age gap between my dds.
I can clearly remember dd1's first steps it was in my mum's living room she walked over to my brother who was eating a chocolate doughnut. She had on pink dungarees and her hair was in bunches. She was 11months old. That was 30 years ago this year🙈
Don't remember anything else. Poor Dd2(6) did all the firsts and no one bothered 😂😂😂

lljkk · 07/04/2022 10:21

Mostly no, especially for younger dc (!)

Mossstitch · 07/04/2022 10:21

Phew😅 thought it was just my bad memory! Do remember one of mine's first words but only because it's funny. We were back from France with loads of little bottles of beer (in the days when you bought duty free booze from holidays) so we're having them regularly, he kept toddling over to the coffee table reaching for them and I would say 'no its daddy's alcohol you can't have that' ........ One day he just pointed at it and said 'alcol' then wouldn't stop saying it......... The shame 😳😂

Thank god for this thread.

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/04/2022 10:27

The first two yep, holding own head (17 and 24 days) where first steps were taken (church hall, tennis club) etc; subsequent - no, a big blur, oh well!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/04/2022 10:29

Walking, that's about it.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/04/2022 10:29

I'm frantically trying to think of firsts and all I can come up with is the first time dd let go of the bar at swimming lessons. She was so delighted with herself.

They are all adults now and doing pretty well in life so my amnesia has obviously not adversely affected them.

LittleBearPad · 07/04/2022 10:30

I can remember first steps as they were birthday and Boxing Day. Other than that I’m a bit hazy

HRTQueen · 07/04/2022 10:34

I can’t remember first word but I remember he could say the cats name but what he called him seemed more difficult to say

I remember his first steps

I never did get round to filling in his baby book Blush maybe I shall do it this weekend

Frlrlrubert · 07/04/2022 10:39

I remember her first ice cream because we'd barely started weaning but SIL was holding her while eating a chocolate ice cream and she just grabbed it!

We take a lot of photos so we can scroll back and go 'oh look that was her first x', but honestly, most aren't imprinted on my memory.

orangeisthenewpuce · 07/04/2022 10:40

Mine are adults and I can't remember first steps, first words, nothing like that. Not the end of the world.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2022 10:44

Walking, yes, for both. I missed DS’s first steps even though I was at home, but out of the room. Came back, and dh and our friends told me all about it!

DS’s first tooth, swear word (taught by his great aunt!), day at nursery, swimming lesson, day at scho, Cub camp, bike riding…. Lots of DS (DC1) memories; not so much for his sister.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2022 10:45

Interestingly both DC’s first word was “duck”. We used to go to the duckpond a lot!

RedskyThisNight · 07/04/2022 10:46

I remember DD's first steps because she chose to make them at DS's birthday party (with both sets of grandparents there). I can't remember DS's first steps even though he is the oldest child.

Struggling to remember any other firsts though ...First day at school maybe? oh no, I actually wasn't there, I must be remembering some other school day.

DockOTheBay · 07/04/2022 10:48

I have videos of a few of my kids firsts so I will remember those, but I don't think I otherwise would. I do remember the first time she slept through the night because it was a loooong time coming!

caringcarer · 07/04/2022 11:11

My kids have long grown up but I recall a few. Mostly for my dd who was PFB. Ash we said nana, dada, carcar, and cat all before mama. She was an early talker but would not walk independently until 13 months. My youngest son said mama at 7 months but nothing much else until 10 months and did not say dada until 11 months but walked at 9 months and was running at 10 months. Middle son late to talk first word boo for boob, late to walk 13 months but very fast crawler at 6 months. I look at photos and think oh yes that was first time we took dd to zoo or beach. But only prompted because of photos. Less photos of second and third DC.

RedWingBoots · 07/04/2022 11:17

First word because it was unusual.

Other firsts nope. I do have some of them recorded in pictures and messages.

And she is only 3.....

Neverreturntoathread · 07/04/2022 11:19

I remember the first steps, first cup of water, first solid food, and first brussel sprout (he was not happy with the sprout!) Don’t remember first sweets / ice cream / chocolate chips etc.

Nothing else particularly springs to mind. Maybe the first time he slept through the night, age 2. Oh and first time I told him off, he was so sad!

Neverreturntoathread · 07/04/2022 11:19

Oh yeah and first word obvs

radiohp · 07/04/2022 11:19

Steps yes, solids yes. Anything else, no

Chasingaftermidnight · 07/04/2022 11:28

I remember steps, shoes, solid foods and sleeping through the night. Pretty much everything else I can think of was such a gradual process that I can’t pinpoint a first. Particularly talking. It was hard to differentiate when babbling ‘mamamama’ became a definite ‘mama’ with purpose and meaning for example.

Coldmugoftea · 07/04/2022 11:30

Nope but most importantly I was there for all of them, crucially for their first ice cream 😈

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/04/2022 11:32

Honestly - no.

Favourodds · 07/04/2022 11:39

Mine's only 18 months so I do feel quite bad that I've already forgotten her first word 🤦‍♀️

It's all just a big sleepy blur, isn't it? The only thing I ever feel really sad about is not remembering how she felt in my arms when she was really tiny (not a first admittedly)

Echobelly · 07/04/2022 11:45

Mine are 10 and 13 - I remember their first word, as they both said the same word (albeit in different ways) at the same age (about 10 months)

I remember walking/crawling as they were both quite late - DD started crawling c10 months and walked at 16 months, DS crawling pretty much of the dot of first birthday and walking pretty much on the dot of 18 months.
