to find Neighbour's 3am Milk delivery annoying?

Yamyam13 · 05/04/2022 15:31

TBH I do actually think I am being unreasonable 😂 but basically just want to rant about being woken up at 3am because of just 2 neighbours on our street (out of 50) who get milk delivered.
Especially as where we live there are 2 well
Known supermarkets within a minutes walk AND a 24 hour shop.

We used to get milk delivered and he always turned up at 3am. He was very quiet tbh and I hardly ever woke up esp since the novelty wore off! It was nice to have it delivered fresh in glass bottles but we paid a premium and I questioned how fresh it was when we had a bottle which had gone off. Then he failed to deliver a couple of times and so we cancelled all deliveries. It was nice while it lasted but as you say in your post, completely unnecessary seeing as the local shop stock the same milk but in plastic bottles.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 05/04/2022 15:54

That's when milk gets delivered. Unless he's making an unnecessarily large amount of noise (slamming multiple doors, playing music loudly, yelling to people), learn to tune it out.

3totheright4totheleft · 05/04/2022 15:56

Surely the point of milk deliveries is that you DON'T use plastic as the glass ones get recycled! I don't think it's your neighbours' faults for trying to be more eco-friendly!

SirChenjins · 05/04/2022 15:56

We've recently switched to milk in glass bottles (despite having shops close by) - all part of our drive to cut down on plastic. What is it that's waking you?

Pootles34 · 05/04/2022 15:57

The supermarket thing is besides the point - we use the milkman because want to support our local dairy and pay a decent price for milk, as well as having the glass bottles.

TBH I didn't realise we even had a local one until we had a newborn and I was up at that time - perhaps yours is especially loud?

Tiredoftiers · 05/04/2022 15:58

I’m with you, they turn up in a diesel flat bed opening and slamming doors. They do two houses so two folk get out. Could not work out why my husband and I were waking every single night at 0400 initially.
No issue if they used an electric milk float with no doors.

diddl · 05/04/2022 16:17

"completely unnecessary seeing as the local shop stock the same milk but in plastic bottles."

It's not about it being "necessary" though is it?

Hopefully they are supporting a local business.

Greatoutdoors · 05/04/2022 16:20

I love hearing the milkman at 3am. I find it really soothing.
Besides, it’s better for the environment and the local community to buy local in glass bottles.

Maybe you’re my neighbour 😁
I like my milk delivery because it’s annoying to go to the shop when you have to drag a tired toddler with you across a busy road, or when they’re already in bed, and you’re the only adult in the house

Leftbutcameback · 05/04/2022 16:25

Is it possible that your body is now used to waking up at that time than your actually hearing it?

Our neighbours have theirs delivered at 10:30pm which seems a bit strange!

tigger1001 · 05/04/2022 16:25

We get our milk delivered. Started it in lockdown and have continued with it.

Love the fact it's supporting a local business rather than a big national store and glass bottles was a big bonus.

ChevreChase · 05/04/2022 16:29

Really noisy flat bed diesel truck here too at 3am, always wakes me! Milk floats were fine, silently gliding around. Fortunately the delivery is not daily here, only three times a week.

RewildingAmbridge · 05/04/2022 16:30

We have our milk delivered, was a God send when Covid hit. I like that the glass bottles are re-used and they pay the farmers a more reasonable rate than the supermarkets. Ours comes around 4, I only know from our camera doorbell he's very quiet

PineappleRingo · 05/04/2022 16:30

Try white noise on at night / that really helps us as we have very noisy Neigbours

SweatyChamoisPad · 05/04/2022 16:31

I’m pro local delivery but can’t understand why they deliver so early. When my mum died at home we had the doctor and then the funeral directors turned up about half three. They had to put her on a stretcher and get her downstairs so I opened the front doors and porch doors to help. Our milk lady was just coming up the drive as my mum was going down - she was absolutely mortified and couldn’t stop apologising and then burst into tears. Having to deal with that a couple of hours after I’d seen my mum take her last breath was a bit weird. But then, a day later, we woke up to see the most beautiful bunch of flowers nestled in with our milk and eggs.

godmum56 · 05/04/2022 16:37

yanbu. I stopped by own delivery because of the noise.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/04/2022 16:47

The supermarket thing is besides the point - we use the milkman because want to support our local dairy and pay a decent price for milk, as well as having the glass bottles.

This. Able-bodied people sometimes employ cleaners, people who can drive sometimes use taxis, most people who have reasonable-sized gardens still buy vegetables from shops - people are different and choose what suits their lives best, for a whole host of practical or ethical reasons.

They shouldn't make excessive noise, but you can't expect absolute silence during night-time hours - there will always be vehicle and other noise from people working, travelling or doing other stuff, not to mention neighbouring babies and young children who don't care that it's night time!

GeorgiePorge · 05/04/2022 16:50

Re enviro credentials of local deliveries.. a glass bottle has to be used at least 20 times before it balanced the co2 in single use plastic...that is before you factor in the distance it has to travel to get to you.

It can be a more environmentally friendly option, but not always.

Also I'm all for supporting local business... but a lot of what seems are 'local ' milk delivery services are owned by muller or large dairys..it doesn't always guarantee a fair price to dairy farmers. I have no real 'local' option where I live in the sticks.

I'm not against milk deliveries... just as ever finding the green option it just isn't always as easy as you think.

AnxiousHeffalump · 05/04/2022 16:51

Yanbu. That would annoy me too.

Beees · 05/04/2022 16:58

Oh my goodness, I had to double check this wasn't me posting in a sleep deprived haze as I genuinely nearly started the exact same thread this morning!

It's driving me bonkers. Even with white noise the delivery driver is so loud. This morning he was whistling whilst he delivered. I have no advice but by rant away, I feel your pain.

KloppsTeeth · 05/04/2022 17:00

YANBU. Our neighbours 2.30am delivery always wakes me as he turns his van round and lights up my bedroom with his lights on full.
However, like you’ve acknowledged, and like us, it is irritating but not reasonable to complain.
We haven’t got used to the light shining round the slight gaps in our blackout blinds (not that great at keeping full lights out) or the noise of the doors opening and closing.

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/04/2022 17:02

Out local milk man delivers at 5am in his diesel van, and the milk is in plastic containers. Presumably these people go to a shop for food, so I don’t see the point personally.

20viona · 05/04/2022 17:04

Yeah that's a nightmare our bedroom
Is at the front and my neighbour getting in off nights at 6am is bad enough 😂

FadedRed · 05/04/2022 17:05

It was one of the several reasons we stopped having milk delivery. And it had long ago stopped being a ‘local’ business.

Beees · 05/04/2022 17:08

I agree, I don't think many of them are actually local businesses any more. The vast majority will be using a big business like milk and more.
