Electric bill problem, I think I owe £15k :o

This is not a begging thread before anyone piles on. But I am in a flap over discovering the above.

I've had some health issues, plus building works at home which combined together meant I've not been able to read my meter for a few years as it's in an awkward spot. I can't remember the last time either I gave a reading or anyone came out.

I can now access the meter and with all the stuff about electric prices rising I thought I should start with a clean slate. I couldn't access any of the previous readings online but submitted my figure of 31460.

I've since had a bill (obviously generated before my reading) and according to this my last estimate was 52440. I can't access any bills or readings online further back than 12 months and I don't get paper bills haven't for years.

So by my rough calculations based on kwh of I think 21p, I owe about 15k. My usual bills are about £300-400 per quarter. I feel sick.

I can just about pay it if I completely empty my savings and sell some stuff. But it's such a huge amount of money. I couldn't pay it in one go.

What do I do now?

Have you sorted it @electricbills

I got my monthly statement bill yesterday and was £350 😱😱😱.

I was wtf knew prices had gone up

They did estimate from my March 31 reading
.seemed high

I checked their reading much higher then mine by 500 ish

So I checked my photo from 31 March then online and I had stupidly mixed up figures

So where was 65 179

I had put in 65 719

so their reading was estimated at 65 852 😱😱 hence the huge bill

I emailed them proof of pic of 31 March and yesterday’s one

Within the hour they had emailed me saying thanking fir new reading and bill was now £200 so £150 less

Have you gone online op and given reading snd proof

electricbills · 12/04/2022 15:17

little update although not much progress really.

I've now checked my gas meter, got one of the little keys. The current estimated reading is out but only a smallish amount (which was kind of what I expected as I mentioned that the gas meter being outside has been read as it can be accessed anytime) - it works out that I'm about £50 in credit now on that, I've given the correct reading online having managed to get into that account.

As to the electric, not much progress. Still waiting for a revised bill. I gave my reading online almost 2 weeks ago now, hopefully the bill will be issued this week, and then - assuming it says I'm in credit - I can ask them to give me the money back!

Suprised you e heard nothing in 2w @electricbills

My company replied in maybe 2hrs

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/04/2022 16:50

Within an hour

electricbills · 12/04/2022 17:11

When I called them last week they said I had to wait for the reissued bill which could take up to 2 weeks, I checked again online today and there is a message to that effect, I guess there are delays because so many people sent in revised readings at the end of March.

They can't do anything about my query until the bills redrawn so just got to wait I suppose!

Sounds like a crap company. When I submit readings I get an up to date balance within minutes.

Same. I sent one about an hour ago (my fixed term ends today), and my account has been update to reflect my readings and a statement emailed to me.
electricbills · 12/04/2022 17:47

It's one of the major energy companies.

I think that you may get an automatic calculation for a minor difference (That's what happened with my gas, albeit different provider) but possibly not for such a significant difference as this.

Any progress Electricbills?

electricbills · 16/04/2022 14:45

Not yet, I've had a revised bill for my gas now but still waiting on the electric one. Am going to call them again on Tuesday, by then it will be nearly 3 weeks since I submitted my reading (and I'm now getting reminders to pay my bill or they'll take action etc!)

dementedpixie · 16/04/2022 14:52

Maybe submit another reading or phone with an up to date reading. And raise a complaint if they try to fob you off again

fiftiesmum · 16/04/2022 15:04

Quite likely they owe you a lot of money.
First rule of business prioritise anything to do with collecting money and drag your heels on refunds and paying bills

Wherearemymarbles · 20/04/2022 11:35

Send an email to the complaints department.
and fgs dont dont say you think they owe you money!
and if you phone stay on the line until the answer.

Malbecfan · 20/04/2022 11:44

Do another reading today of your electricity meter, photograph it and upload it. That will give you and the supplier a good idea of your 2/3 weekly usage. Be persistent. Twitter is quite useful too, for complaining about poor service...

LakieLady · 20/04/2022 12:30

I know it's an automated system, but it really should stop sending reminders when you've submitted a reading that hasn't been actioned yet. That should reset the reminder date.

If they could do it on a billing system in th early 70s when I worked for SE gas, it should be a doddle now.

1doctorwhofan · 21/04/2022 18:56

Any news @electricbills ?

electricbills · 21/04/2022 23:11

Still no real progress unfortunately.

Still not received an amended bill. Have had daily chasers to pay the original bill though! Couldn't get through on phone. No live chat facility. Sent a message on Tuesday explaining I have sent in a reading, I've not been provided with a corrected bill more than 3 weeks later, it looks as though I've overpaid so am due a refund, and asking for someone to contact me to discuss. Now waiting a response which takes 5 working days.

Hopefully it’ll get resolved soon.

You said you got the revised gas one, how did it look ? Did they owe you for that ?

kittensinthekitchen · 22/04/2022 07:30

Which supplier is this?

SD1978 · 22/04/2022 11:43

Good luck! I hope,it's a positive for you, I've been reading and hoping you get some good news!

Different supplier but the gas was about £50-60 in credit on the revised bill, which was kind of what I expected as I knew that meter because it's outside had been read more recently.

How are they chasing you? Ignore emails. If they phone (unlikely) ask to be put through to a supervisor.

My previous post mentioned Twitter. It seems to be the only way to prod these large suppliers into action.

Marty13 · 22/04/2022 12:05

Your electricity saga has me reading with baited breath haha !

Definitely don't pay until it's all been cleared out and don't suggest to them the meter could have done all the way around - first off that's highly unlikely and second if their estimates are off by that much they haven't done their job properly.

Keep trying to get in touch - both by phone and email - and tell them their estimate is WAY off (which it is no matter how you read this) and it looks like they owe you money.

WhatThe2022 · 26/04/2022 09:55

Tell them if you don't get a revised bill by the end of the month (given how long it's taken so far) you will refer to Ofgem..

I'm guessing they don't want to pay you what they owe you, so are stalling!
