My mum and aunt were children during WW2 rationing but they had chickens, family grew potatoes and the like and so they were fed well enough while being deprived of sweet stuff. (They then celebrated sweet food for our childhoodGrin.)
They were very active in childhood Nd adulthood. No way will I last as long as them.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 04/04/2022 18:11

I need to die long before then because I absolutely can't go into a care home for several very good reasons.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 04/04/2022 18:11

The obesity crisis will shorten life expectancy. That's been clear for a while now.

But any public health interventions to tackle it tend to get derailed by cries of 'fat shaming'. Which is a pity, because as well shortening life, it also reduces quality of life and increases likelihood of comorbidities

QueenFool · 04/04/2022 18:11

Does working longer increase chances of dying sooner?

I expect to be working til about 70 and I always hoped it'd keep me active, social and the brain cogs going. I'm not very good without structure in my life though.

Likeli · 04/04/2022 18:23

I think the divide between different socio-economic groups will massively widen.

The rich will easily live to over 100, poor will die sooner. But there are so many variables.
I predict all these forever chemicals we are polluting our planet with will have serious consequences down the line.
Also depends entirely on whether air pollution improves or gets worse, and which areas?
With the discoveries scientists have made in the last few years we are on the cusp of a medical/biological revolution. The rich will be able to pay for gene therapy for any illness. Poor will be the ones signing up to be experimented on for a few thousands.
Also depends on what kind of lifestyle is fashionable. Younger people might be a lot more health oriented and will shun drinking/smoking/fast food if they grow up being educated about the health consequences.

Chely · 04/04/2022 18:28

People are more unhealthy these days so I wouldn't be surprised if the average life expectancy starts to drop.

Duchess379 · 04/04/2022 18:35

I hope not. I'm in my mid 40s & had enough already.

DogsAndGin · 04/04/2022 19:19

@MidnightMeltdown wow that’s shocking! I’m really interested to read the stats/article you’ve got that from. Would you happen to know where you’ve seen it? What a sorry state of affairs!

Usingit · 04/04/2022 19:29

I hope not,

safetyfreak · 04/04/2022 19:35

I hope not.

This country is already failing the elderly population as its resources are severely stretched. I think quality of life needs to be taken into account when prolonging life.

Sunnytwobridges · 04/04/2022 19:35

I don't think so unless they find a cure for cancer. Cancer seems to kill so many people way before they get to 100.

madmomma · 04/04/2022 19:40

Nah we're all eating ourselves to death aren't we. Ain't no cure for greed. And that's very much me included, before anyone says I'm fat shaming

CornishGem1975 · 04/04/2022 19:43

I really really really hope not. It's one thing living to an old age, it's quite another living to an old age with a healthy body and mind.

Mum2jenny · 04/04/2022 19:45

I can’t see me being alive at 100, may reach retirement age but possibly not. No way do I want to be alive if I’m in pain or have lost my sight

Blossomtoes · 04/04/2022 19:45

@Justanotherobserver

The mother of someone I know was well over 100 when she died. When my friend was asked if she thought she'd live that long, her reply was 'I hope not!'. That's how I feel too, I don't want to be very old for a long time.
Same. My parents were 97 and 99 when they died. I saw enough of what extreme old age brings not to want to go there.
Georgeskitchen · 04/04/2022 19:59

The problem is these days nobody seems to be allowed to die of old age. My great grandma was in her 80s when she took to her bed. Doctor came ( this was in the 60s) doctor said shes near the end. Make her comfortable. She passed away a few days later. Nowadays it would be totally different. Blue light to hospital. Pumped full of drugs, rehydrate and sent home (or a care facility) for a few more weeks/months of misery, then repeat the cycle again and again, becoming increasingly frail until they finally give up. I have witnessed this numerous times as a care worker. It's awful to watch for the patient and for their family a quick and peaceful passing is what most elderly frail folk would want, if asked

Madrenetterhere · 04/04/2022 20:01

Pmsl....the way humanity is going there will be no signs of human life in a hundred years. I vote yabu lol

MurmuratingStarling · 04/04/2022 20:02

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

Hell will freeze over before I go into a care home.
maeveiscurious · 04/04/2022 20:05

I think sugar and fast food will see people die much younger and it will happen in a wave l. Lowest areas in the Uk is 77 for men meaning plenty are going much younger

Antarcticant · 04/04/2022 20:07

I think there are natural limits, however well you look after yourself. Genes play a big part. When you read of ordinary people who have lived to 100 and beyond, they don't always describe super-healthy lifestyles.

Personally, I don't want to live to 100 - the world is becoming a nastier place by the day.

Wbeezer · 04/04/2022 20:11

Well I might, both Grannies lived to 94 and 99, but my hips and teeth won't!

crazeekat · 04/04/2022 20:17

Yes I think it will. Purely due to technology and drug advancement.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 04/04/2022 20:19

Dear god I hope not. Out of the numerous nonagenarians I have known - only one was happy. The rest were tired, arthritic, all their friends were dead, and they were waiting to die.

AlternativePerspective · 04/04/2022 20:23

I hope not.

Lifestyle etc aside we have reached a point where science is keeping people with severe and debilitating conditions such as dementia alive for far longer than it should.

We have entered a period where people seem to think we should preserve life at all cost, when actually a lot of people should be allowed to die when nature intended, rather than being kept alive by multiple drugs, resuscitations etc.

I wouldn’t want to live to a hundred if that meant my last 20 years involved my declining health, memory, capacity continued to reduce so I didn’t actually live them, I just survived them. No thanks.

If I am ever diagnosed with dementia I will be off to Switzerland while I still have capacity. Similar to mnd etc

wonkylegs · 04/04/2022 20:32

I don't think it will
Although life expectancy for the wealthy may on average increase for the whole population it is likely slowed and is even going backwards.
Poverty and social inequality reduce life expectancy and there is a rise of dementia and other generally age related diseases which mean that the population faces different challenges to that leap in age expectancy that has come before so I think on average over the population it will stay below 100

My grandfather lived to 97 and was very healthy until he died (heart attack when out with his new 'girl'friend - granny having died 25yrs previously) - he lived life to the fullest and if I could be like him I'd happily live to an old age.
DHs gran lived to the same age and was miserable for the last 20yrs of her life, she was wealthy and had everything you could want but was only happy when she was miserable or complaining and everyone around her miserable too. I would prefer to die young than be like that.
My mum got dementia at in her mid 60's and I'll be surprised if she makes it to her mid 70's and I hope she doesn't because it's a horrible disease and not really living.
