Aibu to hate wings...

Light hearted. I came off the coil to ttc and got pregnant a few months later. So I've had like 4 periods in 6 years. Now they're back post partum and honestly when did it become so hard to find towels without wings.

Who invented these wing things and does anyone actually like them? I find they don't stick to my underwear and just stick to leg legs and chaif my thigh. I actually find non winged towels stay in place no problem. The winged ones end up moving.

Aibu to ask if people actually like these things?

I worked in sales selling Kotex stick on towels when they were first launched in the 70s. The alternatives like Dr Whites needed a belt that the towels were looped onto or special pants with a pocket to hold the towel in place. So a product that you could just stick inside any pair of pants was revolutionary. As we were presenting them to shop managers, more than one asked "Stick ons? Doesn't it hurt when you pull them off?'

MrsToothyBitch · 04/04/2022 07:59

I also thought this would be about chicken!

I only occasionally use pads but when I do I find the non winged ones seem to sit better for me. The winged ones like to go rogue. Not sure why. You think it would be the other way round. I'm pretty sure I remember thinking something must be wrong with me as a teenager because I found them so unsticky despite the blurb. Worth noting that I'm a massive fidget and don't sit still.

Would love to try period pants but I pass really, dramatically huge clots. Not sure how well that would work.

I don't get on with the winged ones either. They always end up stuck to themselves before I can get them in place. I mostly use washable pads now.

Kinsters · 04/04/2022 08:16

I agree with you! I've not had many period over the past 10 years because of birth control and pregnancy but when I did I always used pads with wings. It was a revelation when I accidentally got some without wings and they were much more comfortable and fitted much better!

For anyone who thought this thread was about
Paul McCartney
Please enjoy this classic clip from Matk&Lard's Classic Cuts.

On topic, I can't seem to keep a pad in place without wings. Even with wings it can be a pain. Mostly I mooncup nowadays but still need a pad as well on the heaviest days.

Aliceforgot · 04/04/2022 08:27

Ah, I also thought this was a Paul McCartney thread. Shame!

I thought this thread was about bingo wings!

Me too

I prefer the ones with wings, they stop the towel from bunching up and me leaking round the sides.. I remember having this conversation with my ex. She didn’t like them because she said the wings just got stuck to each other, but I suggested she stick the towel down, then peel the backing paper and stick each wing individually. Turns out she’d never thought of doing that and the suggestion helped a lot.

ConkerBonkers · 04/04/2022 11:10

I go down the tampon and pad route

alittlequinnie · 04/04/2022 11:20

I hate them too OP - I never stop moaning about them.

When I'm trying to take the plastic off the winged bit I always manage to bend the wing a bit so it sticks to itself.

Then when taking them off I always manage to tear the towel off but the wings still sit there mocking me and firmly stuck to the underside of my knickers!

Whilst we are on the subject - I also hate the fact that cardboard applicators for tampons are so unreliable.

I surely can't be the only woman who often ends up with the applicator halfway up her foof with a tampon that refuses to be ejected!

I've taken to pushing the tampon out of the applicator before I try to insert it and then pushing it back into the applicator to make sure the little cardboard jaws open up when inside!

Stupid things!

I'm 51 now and each time I have a period I hope to GOD it's my last but no... next month the little bugger arrives... right on time! :(

I hate sanitary towels with a passion. I have only ever used them after having a baby. They feel like having a nappy on, they are uncomfortable and make you aware you are having a period (unlike a tampon where you feel nothing), they smell. My mum used to wear huge ones and you could hear the towel rustling as she walked (and if you knew what to listen out for).
They are GROSS GROSS GROSS on every level

Grammarmum · 04/04/2022 11:30

Why are tampons so unpopular now? It was unheard of in the 80s /90s to use pads unless periods really heavy?!

Supersnot123 · 04/04/2022 12:06

I agree @custardcustardmorecustard it was one of the worst bits of having a baby for me!! (although I had a c section haha)
I just feel like I'm wearing a damp nappy :(

Between coming off contraception / being pregnant / breastfeeding I have have about 6 periods in the last 10 years so just use tampons atm, but when we're done having babies I'll go back to long-term contraceptives that stop periods.

Environmental impact? Not wanting unnecessary chemicals in a very sensitive part of the body?

Reusable ones don’t smell.

I have a friend that doesn’t wear pants who sticks them to herself. Confused
