What is a reasonable price for a cleaner?

I need some help to gauge a reasonable price for a cleaner please.
I'm trying to find a new cleaner for my elderly parents as the last one has had to leave. Previously they were paying £13.50 an hour through an agency. (supplied cleaning materials)
I've just been quoted £20 an hour. (Also supplies materials)
We live in North East England if that helps. My parents live in a small 3 bed semi, & have 3 cats.
I realise people need to put prices up with the rising cost of living.
Is £20 an hour reasonable? Or a bit much.

We live in London and we pay £15.50 an hour so I think so.

cloudcett · 02/04/2022 18:48

That does sound a lot. We live in the south east and pay £13 a hour (cash though and not through an agency).

underneaththeash · 02/04/2022 18:55

I had a cleaner for my mil and it was £15/hour in the NE. Unfortunately she currently has no hot water abs won’t install a new boiler. So she now has no cleaner!

HelpIcantfindaname · 02/04/2022 19:05

The one for £20 an hour is not through an agency.

£20 is a lot much!

JanetandJohn500 · 02/04/2022 19:10

North West and I pay £10 per hour. She's worth every penny

HanSB · 02/04/2022 19:11

Ours is 13.50 usually an hour in London but she charges us £40 for 3 hours

Wherearemymarbles · 02/04/2022 19:12

We pay £13.50 an hour in London

Iamblossom · 02/04/2022 19:13

That's alot. Ours just put her prices up to £14 an hour. We are south east

Roselilly36 · 02/04/2022 19:13

I used to pay £12.50 ph, a couple of year back SE.

FTEngineerM · 02/04/2022 19:13

That’s a lot.
Ours was £13/hr and brought everything.

FTEngineerM · 02/04/2022 19:14

Saying that she’s readvertised our slot as we’re moving and it’s gone up to £14/hr

ComDummings · 02/04/2022 19:15

£20 is a lot (my area is around £15) but if people will pay it at £20 I don’t blame them for setting their price at that.

whoruntheworldgirls · 02/04/2022 19:16

Just outside York, I pay £16 an hour inc products but they use my hoover/mop to avoid cross customer contamination such as COVID. All products stay at my house too.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 02/04/2022 19:21

I don't think £20 is hugely unreasonable when you look at what it covers.

Yes, minimum wage is "only" £9.50 per hour, but she also need to cover loads of other costs before she puts any money in her pocket.

Fuel
Supplies
Business/liability insurance
Business insurance for her vehicle plus all associated running costs.
Travel time between clients
National Insurance
Tax
Pension
Sick Pay
Annual Leave
Advertising
Clothing/uniform

Only once she's paid out for all of that can she put money in her pocket as her profit/earnings. £20 seems a lot but people often forget that when you earn minimum wage as an employee, it costs the employer a lot more than that to hire you and have you on their books.

RoseGoldEagle · 02/04/2022 19:26

Ours was £12/hour and recently went up to £14/hour, also North East.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 02/04/2022 19:26

Cost are going up a lot. I’ve paid as low as £12 / hour in the past but currently can’t find anyone for less than about £15. Out current cleaner charges us a flat rate for the house and stays as long as it takes, she provides all products and I would say it averages out at £15-16 / hour. She is excellent though, otherwise I would find someone else

OldTinHat · 02/04/2022 19:28

I'm in the SE and have just been quoted £15 via an agency with them providing cleaning supplies. My support worker suggested Age UK who charge £17.50 an hour (I'm 50 btw!).

The cleaner I had before I moved three years ago charged £11.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 02/04/2022 19:30

I have seen ‘eco cleaners’ recently advertising at £20 an hour and another local agency charge £22.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 02/04/2022 19:31

Im in Ne and pay £15 direct to the cleaner. I would expect to pay an agency more.

Mine (agency) has just put the price up from£13/hr to £13/hr
£20/hr is steep

JuliaSways · 02/04/2022 19:48

My boss charges £15 an hour (very small setup of 5 cleaners), North West. We use our own cleaning supplies with the exception of vacuum and mop.

FurbleSocks · 02/04/2022 19:51

Midlands £12/hour

Clockstooforward · 02/04/2022 19:59

Am in South East ..£15 minimum around here and very well deserved IMHO.
