What is a reasonable price for a cleaner?

HelpIcantfindaname · 02/04/2022 18:44

I need some help to gauge a reasonable price for a cleaner please.
I'm trying to find a new cleaner for my elderly parents as the last one has had to leave. Previously they were paying £13.50 an hour through an agency. (supplied cleaning materials)
I've just been quoted £20 an hour. (Also supplies materials)
We live in North East England if that helps. My parents live in a small 3 bed semi, & have 3 cats.
I realise people need to put prices up with the rising cost of living.
Is £20 an hour reasonable? Or a bit much.

That is too much. North West 12 to 15 per hrs here

Scottishgirl85 · 02/04/2022 20:02

Affluent village in SE - we pay £17/hour

bassackwards · 02/04/2022 20:12

We pay £20 which might be slightly above market rate, but we really value the service

rainyskylight · 02/04/2022 20:16

£40 for 3 hours in SE London. Direct not agency.

JaceLancs · 02/04/2022 20:32

I pay £15 an hour
DM pays £10 an hour
Both North west

nalabae · 02/04/2022 21:03

Live in London and I’m a cleaner. I charge £15ph

Kite22 · 02/04/2022 21:19

Midlands £10ph
She is self employed.
Haven't been asked for an increase.
Haven't offered an increase as I did still pay her for months of not coming for various periods over COVID.

GU24Mum · 02/04/2022 21:41

I got a quote from an agency yesterday:
they are asking for £23 an hour. On the plus side, the rest of the family is now a bit keener to help.....

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 03/04/2022 10:23

£20 does sound a bit steep tbh, but all about supply and demand in your exact area.

I’m in an affluent West Berkshire town. I charge £16 per hour for 2.5 hours or more, and am going to increase to £18 per hour for 2 hours (which is my minimum time). Public car parking is charged on top at cost. All equipment and products supplied apart from special floor/furniture waxes/polishes and brass/silver cleaning polishes. I have several clients that are approximately 15 minutes drive out of the main town, and charge travel time one way for these.

Rates in my area are £15-£18 for self-employed, £18-24 for agencies. All clients are supplied with an invoice, cash either gets paid into my personal account or accounted for as petty cash and used to purchase supplies/diesel. And yes, I’m insured, and pay tax/NI on everything I earn.

ItIsntFair · 03/04/2022 10:25

£15 an hour direct here (Yorkshire), I supply everything.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 03/04/2022 10:26

Should have said: cash paid into my personal account is transferred to my business account to avoid cash deposit charges!

Greengagesnfennel · 03/04/2022 13:09

Think it depends how many hours for each visit TBH. £20 ph if you are asking for 1-2h per visit ie a quick clean up several times pw then not unreasonable, as have to factor in lost time getting there. Cost of fuel etc. £20ph for a 4h weekly clean then prob too much. I pay £45 for
~3h once pw. NW.

Needathickskin · 03/04/2022 16:41

We are in Hampshire and ours used to charge £12.50 per hour (we supply all materials)
We have just revised this up to £15 ph (at our own initiative) to reflect inflation and also because she's worth it

AnxiousHeffalump · 03/04/2022 16:53

Yorkshire £25 for two hours and she is fantastic. We did have a more expensive one but she was rubbish.

TheGoogleMum · 03/04/2022 16:56

£15 an hour seems to be going rate by me (midlands) but some will do it cheaper and some for more of course

Viviennemary · 03/04/2022 16:57

£20 an hour is very high. I would say £15 or £16 at the very most even with all the cost of living rises.

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/04/2022 16:59

I think it’s a lot but depends on the area.

ZenKaleidoscope · 03/04/2022 17:02

Sometimes they charge more if you only need it for one hour at a time. So are you sure it would still be £20 per hour if you booked it for 2 hours per week for example?

mrsbyers · 03/04/2022 17:05

I’m in NE pay about £12 an hour , was actually given a price for the house 4 bed , 3 bath of £36 a fortnight and it takes her about 3 hrs

cataline · 03/04/2022 17:15

I'm also in the NE and pay £15 an hour through a great local agency.

We've had loads of cleaners over the years and they've always ended up being rubbish.

We've had this cleaner for years now and she's consistently good. We have her for 2 hours a week.

MySecretHistory · 03/04/2022 17:27

There are lots of factors
If you book for 6 hours or a full day it us usually cheaper by hour
Start of the week is cheaper than Fridays, afternoons cheaper than morning etc

I cant understand why people gloat that they pay £10 which is less that the minimum wage (allowing for NI, pension and tax)

CailleachGranda · 03/04/2022 17:53

Ours had just put price up to £17ph. We're in Perthshire

BambinaJAS · 03/04/2022 18:13

We have sky high prices down here in Surrey.

£23ph

We use a company, and have always found them very expensive.

Unfortunately, not much choice around here.
