AIBU… failed driving test at the last turn, is this reasonable?

Literally that… I failed my driving test at the last turn. Turned left off the road and into the car park. I then apparently took the right hand turn (once inside the car park) too far on the right side of the road… was told I cut the corner at a junction…. No road markings. It was my one and only major fault. A few minors otherwise.

See pic…. Red arrow was my path. Blue mark was the end of the test…

AIBU - you deserved to fail.

YANBU - that’s unfair, you should have passed.

@Technosaurus

I failed my first test due to a wheel being an inch over the line on the bay used to park before we finished. The second I saw it I knew it was a fail, was hoping I'd cocked something else up somewhere... The examiner was very apologetic saying it was my only major and no minors!

Annoying but not unfair, that's just how it is. Passed second time with 8 minors, don't worry about it, just learn not to do it again.

Blimey most people in car parks would fail if that's the case! Especially the SUV drivers who need two spaces...

Ah it's the kind of thing we all do on the odd occasion when it's quiet. But you have to drive like a saint on your test! Congratulations for passing because they are soo nitpicky

cptartapp · 19/04/2022 16:26

I failed my driving test thirty years ago as I pulled up in front of a hedge in the test centre at the end of the test and touched it with the front of the car. He told me until that point I'd passed but the hedge could have been a child and so I'd failed.
Took me another 3 goes after that!

Congratulations on passing @Lastsecondfail
**@Phos* @Jaxhog*

Is that a recent thing, a fail because of stalling the car? I literally stalled the car on my first test pulling out of the test centre at a junction and thought it was all over, but was told you can't fail for stalling the car? I did fail in the end but not because of the stalling.

I'm talking years ago, so perhaps is a new thing now!
I don't think it's recent - PP must have had a harsh examiner!

I stalled during the test I passed a few months ago. As long as you can take off safely and correctly again it shouldn't be a fail.

Jaxhog · 19/04/2022 16:48

It was a long time ago!

Whooshaagh · 19/04/2022 17:03

My dd failed for sticking very slightly out in a box junction.
My ds actually crept slightly over the speed limit on a country lane and still passed.
Dd was furious.

I do think there is a bit of bias in favour of men.

Phos · 19/04/2022 17:51

@DearlyBeloathed and @Straightupp

It was about 10 years ago. Both my instructor at the time and the chap who took over when she unfortunately moved house said it seemed unduly harsh but it is what it is, they don’t change their minds.

If your positioning was as depicted in the photo, you’ve cut the corner, you should have driven to where the first red car to the left is before making your turn.
You’d have had better visibility to any vehicles exiting the parking spaces, especially the spaces closest to where you turned into.
You can’t afford to ‘switch off’ when driving. I get it though, the test is nearly over and you start to relax a little. However, the test isn’t over until you’ve parked and turned off the engine.
A few driving lessons with a qualified instructor would pay dividends.
I failed my first test on a three point turn (turning in the road) I nudged the curb reversing.
I hate drivers cutting the corners, especially if they glare at me for ‘making’ them cut the corner as if it’s my fault by my correct positioning.

Thanks for all of the messages Smile

I'm so glad to have passed as the examiner was horrible- definitely would have knocked my confidence if I would have had to take it again.

I tried to make pleasantries and just got cut off every time. The last one was happy to chat, and I actually drove better last time Hmm

Wonder if playing the bad guy (woman) is a thing Hmm it's actually statistically proven that males have a higher chance of passing!

@incognitoforthisone

I'm pretty sure the examiner knows what constitutes a pass or a fail. They don't fail people for fun. I know it's frustrating, but I bet you'll pass with flying colours next time.
Apparently it's rumoured from a friend of a friend, that their is apparently a quota that has to be met,
UmbilicusProfundus · 19/04/2022 23:11

Well I think you were very unlucky first time around when there are no road markings. So congratulations on passing, and reflecting positively on your experience.
