To hate going out for a meal

I’ve always thought eating out was expensive…but since covid and not going out at all now I just can’t be bothered to go ! Every time I go out the service is crap or the food is crap . Then I get the bill at the end and think omg could of brought loads in Lidl for that 🤔😳 would much rather eat in but I think my husband just thinks I’m being miserable. Is it just me 🤷‍♀️

I fell out of 'love' for restaurant/take away food years before covid.

The food is too salty.
There aren't enough vegetables.
The meat portions are too big.
The portions are too big.
I watch very full plate after very full plate ordered by people go uneaten, go to bin. `I hate the waste and hate how others don't mind the waste.
£20-£30 / head for a meal is a lot to pay.

whynotwhatknot · 31/03/2022 21:13

taste my amous bouche"

well its very amousing-chandler bin

I do think things have changed since COVID. We've been for a few disappointing meals where they've obviously been short staffed of either waiting staff or in the kitchen. Food a bit meh.

If you live in a city like me there are two types of eating out, though, aren't there? Well, 3 if you count fast food. There's the cheaper "let's just have our tea out instead of cooking" type of place, often more suited to taking the kids to. Food is basic, not terribly exciting, and something you could easily cook yourself at home. Since COVID the increasing prices of those type of places often don't justify the reason for the visit - ie the "well at least we didn't have to cook it and clean up after it" type of feeling. For the occasions when you really don't want to cook I prefer a delivery/takeaway now. Don't want the faff of having to look fairly presentable, the expense of parking or transport, or not being able to have a drink if you drive, the markup on alcohol, additional cost of tips etc. It saves a bit of time too, if you just have to wait in for your delivery person - you can be getting on with other stuff.

And then there's the fancier, more expensive places which are "let's have a lovely meal out as a treat/for our anniversary". The dishes are more elaborate, and need someone skilled to cook them, the ambience and decor feel like a treat, service is usually great.

To be honest, these days, I'd much rather not bother with the first type of eating out. Am happier to go out less but to fancier places. But I'm not must into big group meals out anymore so maybe that's why.

I think if you live in a rural village then you usually don't have much choice of eating out really. It's often just pub grub, isn't it? Similar stuff on the menus everywhere. I guess it can get a bit samey and not very exciting. They often find it difficult to recruit stafff if it's somewhere seasonal in a tourist area. And if it IS in a tourist area then often getting a table can be a pain in the arse.

Babyroobs · 31/03/2022 21:13

I think some places have really gone downhill recently. My dh is a good cook and can do better meals than restaurant meals.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 31/03/2022 21:14

Over and above all my food intolerances nowadays, my husband and I are both chefs so we grudge spending money on mediocre food.

We don't eat out anymore because it's too expensive plus Covid and people with poor hygiene.

We used to eat something nice at home and then go out for a couple of drinks. Still fun but less expensive.

CaliforniaDrumming · 31/03/2022 21:15

I think eating out in the UK Is extremely overrated and overpriced, as compared to the rest of the world, especially Asia. We do eat out every so often, but I often prefer to save that money and use it for the theatre or music/dance, which I think is actually worldbeating.

Chasingaftermidnight · 31/03/2022 21:16

I really like eating out but I find I’m quite frequently disappointed by service in restaurants so I know what you mean.

Something that came out of the lockdowns that I absolutely love is cook-at-home restaurant meals. Quite a few restaurants have carried on doing them and I love them because it’s great quality food without having to find a babysitter, drive anywhere, get taxis, etc. We recently had one from ‘Made In Oldstead’ for my DH’s birthday and it was amazing.

Bigbouncingbaby · 31/03/2022 21:16

I agree the lidl comparison not the best . Don’t get me wrong I’m not anti social and yes the making an effort and uninterrupted conversation is nice … but I get the bill and mainly just feel ripped off or disappointed . But then everything getting more expensive…. So obviously food will be .

I love going out for a meal. It can be pricey, cheap or somewhere in the middle still love it.

I only get annoyed if it wasn't up to much or I feel I cld have cooked better myself but that doesn't happen very often!

2022HereWeCome · 31/03/2022 21:18

I'm inclined to agree. Two meals out in last couple of months. Neither cheap and food disappointing and service poor (understaffed and lack of training apparently). I'm also veggie so often have limited choice anyway and it tends to be stuff I can do at home. Will still go out occasionally simply to be sociable but generally I would prefer to spend my money on nice ingredients to cook at home or special nibbles from waitrose, a lovely bottle of wine etc or spend my money on other stuff. Used to love going out to eat too.

middlingnot · 31/03/2022 21:20

I've stopped bothering with the cheapo pub food. I can do better and it's always the same menu - lasagne, pie, burger, fish & chips, steak etc. Yawn! If I'm eating out I want something different, something I wouldn't cook at home, good service and a nice setting. It's worth paying a bit more IMO.

HisHX · 31/03/2022 21:25

Not to blow my own trumpet but I’m a very good cook. There. I said it. I only really enjoy going out for food I couldn’t easily replicate at home, e.g. Indian/Thai/tapas .. if the food isn’t exceptional I’d rather make it at home. Depends where you’re going but honestly chain/generic eateries aren’t for me either, especially if combined with bad service!

myyellowcar · 31/03/2022 21:25

I agree OP, Covid hit when it was just getting to the stage where our baby wouldn’t tolerate a meal out and we’ve never really picked it back up. I feel like our standards have got higher, my DH is an excellent cook and often the food isn’t actually better than what we can get at home. Plus service is often poor. And menus have changed for the worse since covid as businesses try and maximise profit. I walk out and yeah the experience has been ok but it isn’t worth what it actually costs.

FoggySpecs · 31/03/2022 21:25

We are lucky we live in London and have some really good places near by but some areas are dreadful. If we eat out these days we only ever have tap water as it tends to be about the food. At home we have really nice wine so we never drink when we are out as comparable wines are expensive.

curlymom · 31/03/2022 21:26

Prices too high. We seem to be paying back pandemic losses. It’s a rare occurrence for us now.

Avocadobacardi · 31/03/2022 21:27

I just love it. My greatest pleasure in life but then I don’t go to crap restaurants so generally the food is far better than I can make myself

FoggySpecs · 31/03/2022 21:27

Also we always take DC who are adventurous and used to eating out. I gerva lot of cooking inspiration from eating out too.

Alliswells · 31/03/2022 21:30

@drpet49

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t enjoy a meal out. You sound joyless.
You sound judgemental
mumda · 31/03/2022 21:32

Go somewhere you pay as you order. Much less stressful and usually excellent service. More affordable too.

MurmuratingStarling · 31/03/2022 21:32

I enjoy going out for a meal, but only at lunchtime.

Really REALLY cannot be fucked with going out in the evening. Prefer to stay in with DH, in the cosy warmth of our home, and watch TV, with a bottle of wine, and a takeaway.

TenoringBehind · 31/03/2022 21:33

I think standards have dropped since Covid, both food and service. Invariably I come away disappointed and thinking I could have cooked whatever it was much better myself.

gingerhills · 31/03/2022 21:35

Our young Whippet is a terrible chewer, and I noticed it’s things that are novel and interesting to chew that she goes for.

Literally “Amusing her bouche!”

Love that image!

Ugzbugz · 31/03/2022 21:36

I love eating out and yes sometimes it's shit but a friend said she didn't enjoy it but only went to the harvester which yes can be fine but is very hit and miss!

FarFarFarAndAway · 31/03/2022 21:37

I absolutely love eating out, but I do agree at the cheaper end of the market the food is often ho hum. I just accept that, ever since I started using Gousto or Hello Fresh, I've realised that we can eat really lovely stuff at home, but the thing is it's boring sitting in for months, and going out is a social occasion, so I still do it knowing that the food may not be ace.

The other thing I love about eating out is I eat stuff out I don't cook at home, so at home we eat all very healthy veggie, lots of vegetables, health conscious stuff, so when I'm out I have a steak or a lasagne, neither of which I would cook at home.

Also, with teens, getting them out of the house for a coffee and a quick bite to eat is a great way to get them chatting about their worries, friends, lives and so on. I don't think the same effect happens round the dinner table somehow.

I don't eat out to have a comparable meal to what I can cook (with the help of a food delivery service), I eat out as it's a social experience. If you don't enjoy that, certainly don't pay out!

shabbalabba · 31/03/2022 21:38

God no...I love going out for food. We were out for Asian tonight with the dc to celebrate a birthday and tomorrow night dh is taking me to a local restaurant for a taster menu night!! I can't wait...I love good food!
