Based on a few threads going around...

Do you have enough savings for 3-6 months or more? Honestly...

OP posts:
Snaketime · 31/03/2022 09:27

Nope. We don't male enough money to save and live pay check to pay check.

Wellthisiscrapeh · 31/03/2022 09:27

No.

And not a hope of being able to save it.

SirChenjins · 31/03/2022 09:29

Yes - but only because of an inheritance. Up until then, no. Most people don’t.

Oblomov22 · 31/03/2022 09:33

No. Just never been able to manage it. Barely have enough for a month. Most months we spend what we earn.

Oblomov22 · 31/03/2022 09:35

..."""I assume most ppl do but maybe I'm wrong?"
WTF? You must know that a tiny tiny % of the working population do? Or else why are they all up in arms about recent electric bill increases?

Gowithme · 31/03/2022 09:46

We do, but that's because our mortgage is paid off so we are able to save.

GrannyBloomers · 31/03/2022 09:49

I had a year's worth of salary saved. Gave it to the ex when we separated along with my half of the house and walked away with nothing after 22 years. Can't say I recommend that.
As a result I went from having a buffer, owning half a detached country house to living from pay cheque to pay cheque.

2KidsNoTime · 31/03/2022 09:49

Yes. I have enough to cover my salary for about 6-8 months but I could probably live on it longer than that if I cut my outgoings down and lived more frugally if we had to.

catsandquails · 31/03/2022 09:53

I'd say we could possibly manage 4 months if we were very careful.

imamumgetmeoutofhere · 31/03/2022 09:54

I don't but my DH does which I would like to hope he would use for the family if needed rather than just keeping to save his own skin Hmm

Foolsrule · 31/03/2022 09:55

Not at the mo but large inheritance payment due any minute. It waxes and wanes. Buy a house, savings go down. Build them up, upsize. No savings again. I do think it’s sensible to have savings though!

edwinbear · 31/03/2022 10:47

We do, but it's ear marked to pay DC's school fees through to the end of 6th form in case DH or I lose our jobs. We both work in unsecure industries and both had periods of unemployment over the last 5 years so for us, we need that buffer. It's a comfort knowing it's there and we know we are fortunate to have it.

Zazdar · 31/03/2022 10:52

WTF? You must know that a tiny tiny % of the working population do? Or else why are they all up in arms about recent electric bill increases?

Because the recent electric bill increases will eat into their savings eroding the safety buffer they have worked hard to achieve?

Isis1981uk · 31/03/2022 10:53

Yes, I have savings that would probably cover me for approval 10 months if needed.

Dumbledoressister · 31/03/2022 10:54

Yes but we're not saving much at the moment.

Isis1981uk · 31/03/2022 10:54

*approximate not approval!! Grin

VestaTilley · 31/03/2022 11:20

No; we bought a house last year which wiped us out. Aiming to save a decent pot up again but it’ll take time. We borrowed a bit from DPs and DPILs and need to pay them back too.

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 31/03/2022 11:29

Nope, terrible luck and I'll health over the past 5 months or so have absolutely decimated my finances. I'd got myself on my feet, had £0 for 3 months which the savings got us through, then there was several emergencies. Then Hs work fell through, so I had to purchase all the "big" purchases required for baby who's on the way.

It's caused a lot of anxiety to have lost tge security blanket I had. Ive got £600 ish left.

Will try to desperately rebuild it but have just faced 2k of medical bills for DDog this week... unsure how long insurance will take to pay out.

VapeVamp12 · 31/03/2022 11:32

I have £1k in premium bonds and thats it

HotChoc10 · 31/03/2022 11:34

Yes, but only because of inheritance.

Ceci03 · 31/03/2022 11:34

In a word, no. I'm scared for the future. every month I try and put some away, but have to dip into it at the end of the month. I'm going thru my direct debits now to see if I can cancel anything else.

TeeBee · 31/03/2022 11:34

Yep, much more. I'm a freelancer and single mother to two expensive teenagers, living in the south east. I'd be a bag of nerves if I didn't have a big financial cushion.

cushioncovers · 31/03/2022 11:36

Yes but only because I moved and downsized not because I can save anything from my income.

courgettigreensadwater · 31/03/2022 11:37

Nope

zingally · 31/03/2022 11:39

More than 6, yes. But less than 12.
