Publicity exercise or not?

OP posts:

@Bippitybopityboo

He laughed, then saw Jada was mad and flipped. I think she's abusive/controlling. She's publically humiliated him alot of times. I think we saw a mentally drained man unraveling.
Why have you added exactly the same post to two threads?

I guess because there are multiple threads on this subject, so why wouldn't she?

Lavenderosemary · 29/03/2022 00:23

It wasn't fake. It benefits no-one, least of all him. He comes across as quite unwell in his acceptance speech...but I might be mistaking unwell for spoiled, entitled and detached from any form of normality and normal social rules...

This does need addressing. He needs to be charged with assault. What the joke is about is irrelevant. You can't hit people every time they piss you off.

He could have addressed the 'joke' publicly, got on the stage and explained why it was so hurtful...it would have had such a positive impact. Instead...

Discwriter · 29/03/2022 00:27

@Itcanneverbesaved it's called Best shape of my life - is supposed to be about how WS gets fit but then goes much deeper.

Bippitybopityboo · 29/03/2022 00:30

Might pop the reply on to the other 17 aswell 🤔

Ivyonafence · 29/03/2022 11:03

@nancy75

What has surprised me today is the number of people saying Chris Rock shouldn’t have joked about JPS’ disability. While I know alopecia is awful to go through is it a disability?
I'm so glad someone else said this.

hair loss is not a disability.

It's ridiculous to conflate the two.

It would be upsetting to have alopecia but if you can pop on a hat and go about your life free from any disadvantage at all, I'm sorry but you're not disabled.

She's perfectly healthy and able bodied. She's just lost her hair.

I understand hair is a complex and important thing to black women but it's not like being able bodied versus not.

When has she humiliated him? They have a open marriage.
BulletTrain · 29/03/2022 11:07

There's no way it's fake. No way. No famous black men in the US are going to perpetuate stereotypes about black male violence.

GeidiPrimes · 29/03/2022 11:32

Fakey fake fakerson. Like the Kanye/Swift altercation a few years ago.

Has Penn "smelted his oscars" yet Grin

GeidiPrimes · 29/03/2022 11:39

Also it doesn't surprise me to see Hollywood promoting toxic masculinity. It's what they do

littledrummergirl · 29/03/2022 11:46

I don't know. It sounds to me as though his home life might be tough at the moment.
He was in a room full of his peers, hoping that he had earned their respect and his hosts were making him and his wife the butt of the jokes.
I would imagine that hurt. I got the impression that they were laughing out of embarrassment rather than because it was funny.
That smacks of bullying to me and the victim responded by hitting out. Not acceptable but it looked as though he had come to the end of his rope.
I can't condemn Will Smith for this.

FarFarFarAndAway · 29/03/2022 11:48

Not fake, no-one is benefitting.

Will Smith has been humiliated by Jada who has had a relationship with her son's 18 year old friend, taking him to award ceremonies, being all over him, and even though they have an 'open' marriage, my guess is that this was still hurtful to Wil. Jada also says her true love of her life is Tupac Shakur, which must also be extremely hurtful to Will. Will is besotted with Jada and feels humiliated, hence the extreme over-reaction to a joke.

I had a feeling CR didn't know Jada had alopecia, neither did I, I just thought she had a close crop as she was so beautiful she could take it, unlike 99% of women on the planet!

BulletTrain · 29/03/2022 11:57

"Reports" say he didn't. I last saw her in Gotham with the sides of her head completely shaved and I also just assumed it was a fashion choice.
I'm not sure he would have said it otherwise, in the knowledge it's a side effect of a disease. He looked so confused when Will came marching up.

hangrylady · 29/03/2022 11:59

"So it's ok for people to slap/punch others when they don't like their words?

Do you want to tell that to victims of domestic violence?"
It's hardly comparable to domestic violence is it now. Not saying it was right but come on get a grip.

Onlyhuman123 · 29/03/2022 12:08

awful on so many levels...but all of a sudden, when the Academy come out and say ' we will review the situation', Will Smith suddenly issues a very well worded direct apology. Very timely. An apology that shouldn't ever have been required had Will Smith behaved more appropriately.

He stood up for his wife...totally understand that...but violently?!!? really?!!?

ThettaReddast · 29/03/2022 12:11

No way was it staged. Perpetuating a stereotype of ‘black male aggression’ would be a ridiculous idea that will benefit him in no way imaginable. He’s got a good career, is generally well respected and was about to win an Oscar for goodness sake, why would he distract from that in such a wholly negative way. The headlines would have been all about his win, he didn’t need to do anything else for attention.
He did seem out of control/unwell and I expect he’ll be heading into rehab in the next month.

VyeBrator · 29/03/2022 12:35

Of course it is. "I don't like what you're saying so I'm going to hit you." In public or behind closed doors, it boils down to the same thing.
Gonnagetgoing · 29/03/2022 12:39

@StrawberryStarfish

Will smith don’t got to cuss in his raps to sell records
Grin Marshall eh?!
theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 29/03/2022 12:42

There are a raft of threads about this already

Give it a rest for Petes sakes

StrawberryStarfish · 29/03/2022 13:21

@Gonnagetgoing couldn’t resist 😂

AWOIF · 29/03/2022 14:24

Well if the Oscars revoke his award then they should do the same for: Casey Affleck, Roman Polanski, Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen, Kevin Spacey, Sean Penn, Jared Leto.
I wonder why they've all been left alone........... Hmmmm

While I agree with the above being unsuitable to win awards it is quite important to remember Will Smith hit someone AT the actual award ceremony - it's not a general is he a good/bad person, it's more that he did it at the ceremony!
SpiderVersed · 29/03/2022 14:30

Appalling behaviour by Smith - is he having some sort of breakdown?

He should have been removed from the theatre immediately, and the Williams sisters could have collected his Oscar in his place.

quest1on2 · 29/03/2022 14:43

It’s just so very very strange. I mean, you could kind of understand it if WS had been standing right next to someone who had made comments that upset his wife and just flipped in the moment. But to actually walk up there, across a stage, to public ally do it in front of all his peers and millions of viewers..., What was he thinking??? He could have just shook his head, or said that was not cool or something. Then taken to social media and everyone would have supported him and the publicity would have been welcomed by other women / people with alopecia, I’m sure. But this is ridiculous. And then to accept an award on the same stage as he’d just punched the presenter... So odd. But I think so many people in that industry have lost the plot. Wait now, for him to “reveal” some epic story about his mental health struggles . You know it’s coming....

quest1on2 · 29/03/2022 14:44

Maybe he is having a breakdown? That’s all I can think of really.
