Is Esther Walker just as bad as Giles Coren?

There have been lots of threads about Giles Coren already, but I read an article on Ukraine written by his wife, Esther Walker, and I think she’s just as bad as him.

I know this was published last week but I’ve been catching up on news after a big work deadline and was totally shocked at this article Esther wrote about the “emotional labour” of talking about what is happening in Ukraine with her 8 year old. This is a week after Giles’ article about being totally bored of Ukraine. What is The Times thinking? It’s completely tone deaf and the worst sort of first world problem for Esther to complain about her “emotional labour” from the safety of one of the Corens’ multiple residences while Ukranian families are being shelled as they try to escape cities that are being bombed. Can’t she put Newsround on if she finds the “emotional labour” of it all so unbearable? Bloody hell, lady. Go and volunteer for the Red Cross or something rather than whinging on about your “emotional labour”!

I'm not totally heartless, I do have some pity for him. It can't be easy living with that amount of anger and resentment. He is pathetic.

He is also a middle aged man of some means, education and contacts. He could access the best help if he wanted. Instead, he deals with his feelings of inadequacy by spewing his damage over other people, running away and hiding. No recognition. No responsibility. No apology.

He is a cowardly, weasley, ungrateful, wee cunt. A total fucking arsehole in arsehole's clothing.

Ester seems like a nicer person, and a far cleverer person , and a better writer than her husband. I have time for her - but him - nah not so much.

Esther would be better off consciously decoupling from Giles, professionally at least. He is becoming increasingly toxic. And they should both avoid writing about the Ukraine. He should stick to restaurant reviews and she is better off writing about cargo pants.

I haven't seen any evidence of her niceness. She just looks like a spoilt woman bleating about things. Obviously he's awful but that doesn't necessarily make her 'nice' simply for not being him.

I’ve read the article and I’ve got literally no problem with it. I’m starting to worry about people’s comprehension skills though if I’m honest. It’s obviously an article about her own fears and parenting your children’s fears rather than ‘complaining’. People just looking for a reason to hate.

I think Esther tried to establish herself as the UK version of Chrissy Teigen - recipes with some upscale parenting and Goop style lifestyle stuff thrown in, but the problem is that John Legend is an actual legend and a US version of a national treasure, whereas increasingly people really dislike Giles and he has done all sorts of truly awful things like creating anti-Semitic sock puppets to abuse his wife with.

I don't think this is doing you much good. I think you're better off finding something more positive to focus on. It's a bit weird to dig into their lives this much.

These are people who professionally write about their personal affairs! Pretty much everything that’s been said on here comes from what they’ve put out there. No one is digging into their lives!

I don't understand why you see posting a link to a newspaper article as an attempt "to dig into their lives". It's not as though @cousingregsgal is going through the Corens' bins. Why do you care so much? If this poster wanted to do something more positive with their time they wouldn't be posting on Mumsnet, or would you for that matter.

I don't think this is doing you much good. I think you're better off finding something more positive to focus on. It's a bit weird to dig into their lives this much.

I think what @Schools2023 is saying is that people should only say nice things about the poor beleaguered Corens because Giles is a nice man really and doesn't mean all the nasty things he's said on the internet, and that he should be able to do and say whatever he likes with total impunity, as should Esther.

Tattle put an end to MOD so we should be grateful for it. Because she was nasty.

Esther Walker has always seemed nice and I like what she writes.

Giles Coren is awful. He has a bitter, nasty streak which seems to go into everything he writes. His article about her being fat after giving birth was abhorrent. He has written a few things I thought were really offensive.

But she seems ok.

I did start to get the impression when she was more active on social media that she may have had a problem with alcohol. It got a bit uncomfortable and I unfollowed her. There are issues with his in my family so it’s a big trigger for me.
