Is Esther Walker just as bad as Giles Coren?

There have been lots of threads about Giles Coren already, but I read an article on Ukraine written by his wife, Esther Walker, and I think she’s just as bad as him.

I know this was published last week but I’ve been catching up on news after a big work deadline and was totally shocked at this article Esther wrote about the “emotional labour” of talking about what is happening in Ukraine with her 8 year old. This is a week after Giles’ article about being totally bored of Ukraine. What is The Times thinking? It’s completely tone deaf and the worst sort of first world problem for Esther to complain about her “emotional labour” from the safety of one of the Corens’ multiple residences while Ukranian families are being shelled as they try to escape cities that are being bombed. Can’t she put Newsround on if she finds the “emotional labour” of it all so unbearable? Bloody hell, lady. Go and volunteer for the Red Cross or something rather than whinging on about your “emotional labour”!

I like Esther and have no issue at all with that column- it's about her life as a mum, she's not comparing herself to someone in Ukraine.

Have only looked at Tattle Life once after reading something Sali Hughes wrote about it and it's the nastiest and most depressing website I've ever seen and the people on there seem obsessive and bitter- definitely not somewhere to hang out if you want to keep a sense of perspective.

cousingregsgal · 28/03/2022 13:00

These are some of the most popular Times commenters on the article (taken from the vile cesspit that is Tattle for full disclosure).

The most liked comments from the Times commenters on the article. (For full disclosure these were taken from Tattle).

So what?

cousingregsgal · 28/03/2022 13:35

I agreed with the commenters in The Times. I thought it was a pointless and tone deaf article.

Right

So we are all meant to go

“Wow look at those comments from complete stranger! Ok OP, you’ve persuaded me!”

Grin

You changed your name to stay a bitchy thread, posting a picture from tattle. The act you go on tattle is really all we needed to know op

Sailorsusan · 28/03/2022 13:41

Well, these days everything is 'tone deaf'. I do worry about talking to my son who is the same age about it. I can worry about this as well as worrying about refugees who are being bombed and nuclear weapons. Being worried about people is not a finite thing.

Yes, you said that in your first post- not sure what the screen grabs are adding. This whole thread just seems like an attempt to shit stir.
RaquelOak · 28/03/2022 13:53

I would call it an attempt to stimulate discussion rather than to "shit stir" by the OP. I am always amazed at all the Mumsnet police who try to shut down any discussion that they disappove of. Why don't you move on to another thread? [Top tip: there was a fascinating one about a woman who used find my iphone to look for her airpods and discovered that her husband was in Spain when he said he was golfing in Portugal.]

cousingregsgal · 28/03/2022 13:55

This comment about “husband and wife teams” at The Times seems particularly apt in light of all the threads debating whether of not Giles is a beneficiary of nepotism.

@RaquelOak Not trying to shut down discussion, just think it's weird for someone to post screen grabs of what some random strangers on another site think about something, in response to posters not agreeing with you. Who cares? There's a link to the actual article so people can make up their own minds if they wish.

Sailorsusan · 28/03/2022 14:32

Nobody is shutting down the thread? Giles Coren has definitely benefitted from nepotism. I thought that was a given. I expect even he admits this.

NdefH81 · 28/03/2022 15:18

And another screen shot
Fascinating

NdefH81 · 28/03/2022 15:18

From tattle no less. Again. Grin

RaquelOak · 28/03/2022 15:20

I think it's interesting that Esther's article about the "emtional labour" of the Ukraine conflict didn't seem to go down very well with the Times readers, especially after Giles' article about Ukraine last week, which went down like the proverbial lead balloon. Maybe The Times readers have just had enough of the Corens - the podcast, the joint lock down articles etc. I certainly don't feel that I need to hear either of their hot takes on Ukraine.

Sunnysideup999 · 28/03/2022 15:22

Leave his wife out of it.

cousingregsgal · 28/03/2022 15:43

They seem to come as a package deal most of the time though. They do a horrendous joint podcast though and all those “Staying in with the Corens” articles.

YABU @cousingregsgal, she is not as bad as Giles. Giles is a cowardly, talentless, wee cunt who only has a job writing because of his dad.

cousingregsgal · 28/03/2022 16:19

The thread about the Corens on Tattle is very funny. The evidence that Giles is lying about his height is particularly hilarious.

OP posts:
terriblyangryattimes · 28/03/2022 16:36

I can't get offended about this one, nor about her husband's article last week that caused all the furore. It was satire after all, depsite the screenshots bring bandied about the internet.

I actually started listening to their podcast recently and they talked about this on last week's show.

Also tattle is 99% people who are going out of their way to pick holes in someone, celebrity\influencer whoever. Hardly a nice even cross section of opinions Hmm

HDready · 28/03/2022 16:47

If the Tattle thread is so funny OP why don’t you go back there? As others have said, I cannot understand the need to rehash comments from the times and tattle here in order to support your opinion. You are entitled to that opinion without the need for the screenshots of strangers to support you.

For what it’s worth, I like Esther’s writing. She went off the boil for a bit when she was trying to become an influencer, but has acknowledged this on the spike and her writing, and content, is much better again.
