I'm 35 weeks pregnant and iv come down with an awful cold that also is giving me severe lower back pain!

Iv been taken co-codamol 15/500 and its been easing it a lot!

Just googled how many I can take in a day when pregnant to be safe and it says don't take codeine when pregnant! The only problem I have with that is I was prescribed it by a doctor in my last pregnancy for migraines!?

I'm in agony with my back now as I haven't take any since 1pm! Aibu to take 2 Sad

Phone the out of hours doctor for advise. It is an opiate and you are quite close to term so I personally would do all I could to avoid.

Endofdaysarehere · 27/03/2022 19:07

They give you codine in labour so it can’t be that bad for the baby.

TulipsGarden · 27/03/2022 19:07

That sounds like Covid to me, lower back and let pain is a significant symptom.

Absolutely don't take Co codomol when pregnant unless GP says ok to.

Ring 111 to ask

Why not paracetamol? And lay down to rest? You went for very strong medication which is carefully controlled!! Even OTC levels 8/500! They usually ask if you are pregnant before pharmacist will let you have it!

I'm sure it'll be fine, but please be careful x

MissM2912 · 27/03/2022 19:08

The difference with Labour is the baby is coming out so less time being passed over in bloodstream.

Loubylooooo · 27/03/2022 19:09

Babies can get addicted to codeine in the womb - and more risk near to term. Doesn’t matter during labour as they’re not going to get addicted

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/03/2022 19:10

Don't take opiates unless directed to with proper medical advice.

Seriously? I'd have thought that was fairly standard advice.

Ikeptgoing · 27/03/2022 19:10

Umm... during Labour and when baby's heart rate is monitored
Hmum0fthree · 27/03/2022 19:10

@Ikeptgoing I'm in bed now, ill just take paracetamol!

Thanks everyone Thanks

Talk to your dr if you are worried.

Winday · 27/03/2022 19:10

I wouldn't take it without speaking to a doctor first, I think I'd have also tried a lower dose before opting for the 15/500.

Hmum0fthree · 27/03/2022 19:12

@TulipsGarden iv taken multiple LFT all negative so far but wouldn't be surprised if I get a positive in a few days, feels like flu but iv had my flu vaccine and even when DH had Influenza A I didn't catch it so doubt its flu.

@Winday Thats all I had that was stronger than paracetamol as it was prescribed to me, can't even take ibuprofen that would probably help more than paracetamol Sad

I was prescribed it during pregnancy for sciatica.

It’s not unsafe as such, it just hasn’t been deemed totally safe as it’s untested was how the doctor explained it to me. They said late on as well there’s less chance.

linerforlife · 27/03/2022 19:16

You can take cocodamol in pregnancy in the first and second trimesters. You shouldn't take in the third apart from when advised by the doctor as it can affect the baby's breathing if taken close to delivery.

Soubriquet · 27/03/2022 19:31

I was given codeine whilst pregnant over several months due to SPD.

However, I was under a doctors consultation

Seek medical advice before taking things that are not recommended for pregnancy.

I was prescribed 30/500 throughout my first pregnancy for gallstones. As soon as I'd had baby I was pretty much straight away prescribed tramadol for the pain and had emergency surgery when baby was about a month old. We stayed in hospital one night (c-section) he was small, on the 4th percentile but I could eat zero fat so wasn't surprising really and he caught up quickly. By the end I could barely eat anything without pain and lost 35lbs during pregnancy.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/03/2022 20:31

Are you sure it's not the being 35 weeks pregnant / early labour that's giving you back pain? Hope you've got your hospital bag packed.

BurntEnds · 27/03/2022 20:33

Are you sure the baby isn't on its way?!

use257 · 27/03/2022 20:37

It can make the baby drowsy so you could feel less movement and have to have the baby monitored. Up to you but I wouldn't for the symptoms you're experiencing

Bananarice · 27/03/2022 20:42

I would seek medical advice, backache can be a sign of Labour, a kidney infection or covid or numerous things.

gotalittlebug · 27/03/2022 20:46

Agreeing with many of the other posters here - please get medical advice! My son was born at 35 weeks.
