Dog owner angry because i walked away from his dog

I admit I'm a little nervous of certain dogs, I just think 'never say never'.
Anyway just before I was walking in the street and a pitbull type dog was off its lead walking past me. I moved to the other side of the pavement to let them past.
The owner (a young man) took great offence at this snapping, 'He's friendly, he wouldn't be off the lead if he wasn't, Jesus Christ!" Then walked off muttering obscenities.

I didn't respond just carried on walking. Has anyone else met this sort of situation? I'm within my rights to move out of the way of the dog if I want to. Of course owners will always say he/she is friendly but it can be intimidating when a dog you don't know runs up to you.

This happens to me all the time. I dislike dogs and always move out of the way which for some reason the owner always takes as a personal slight.

I've got a Patterdale. She's old, she actually loves people but can be a twatterdale to other dogs. The truth is no one really knows and it's up to people to be sensitive to others needs. I really don't like pit bulls so will give them a wide berth. My husband pats everyone that he walks past!

YANBU , I find so many dog owners are entitled and expect everyone to want to interact or fuss over their dog.

I don't like dogs - I avoid certain walks if I know there are likely to be lots of dogs off lead. The other day I met someone near my house with a puppy (on a lead), I said good morning to the owner but had no wish/need to engage with the puppy ... the owner said in a really loud, passive aggressive voice 'oh come on Fido not everyone wants to talk to you' Hmm.

I also manage a (very small) shop where dogs (obviously excluding assistance dogs) are not allowed .. the amount of abuse I get for refusing entry to dogs - including complaining to Head Office - is ridiculous- why do people want to take their dogs shopping?

Curbside oh yes, I hate that attitude 'he's not going to hurt you' ... maybe not but I don't want to be jumped at by a dog with muddy paws or slobbered over. Why is it acceptable for dog owners to allow that?

Anycrispsleft · 27/03/2022 08:20

Speaking as an ex postie, it's the "never hurt a fly" dogs that are most likely to try and bite you, because their owners seem to forget that they are bloody dogs - loyal to their own pack, not that keen on strangers - and don't bother training them.

Also I do wonder - some of those dogs have lovely natures and all that, but that being said, they are big, muscly, potentially quite scary animals. Why on earth would you buy one of them if you were concerned about people giving you a wide berth as a result? Going out looking scary and then being offended when people react as if they're scared, like a wee poster boy for toxic masculinity.

YANBU. I had a "friendly 'dog snap at my DDs leg when she was about 4. Dog owner said it was DDs fault and she must have done something (she hadn't) because his dog was friendly. Twat.
