@Caz1960

I wonder why there are so many differences.

We were paying £79 pm and now quoted £325 pm.

Are people mixing up coming off fixed rates prices without realising standard rates increase again next month? Or are we being ripped off?

I don’t think we use excessive amounts - it’s only a small flat.

This is the sort of thing that doesn't make sense.

Prices are going up 54% so unless you have been on a really good fix, which is coming to an end now, these gigantic increases are not realistic reflections of what it's actually going to cost

Bluebellbike · 23/03/2022 20:21

Martin Lewis has said that nobody should have their Direct Debit doubled as the price cap is only rising by 54%. He said that some energy companies may be increasing customer's direct debits by more than necessary to help their cash flow. So if anyone believes that their new quote is much too high for their usage they should not agree to such a high increase.

Is it possible to change to paying on receipt of a bill rather than paying monthly?

ssd · 23/03/2022 20:33

I think Martin lewis is really pulling his hair out with all this. Wish he was PM.

pumpkinpie01 · 23/03/2022 20:34

@Bluebellbike it doesn't make sense does it ! I think the energy companies are trying to get as much money as they can now incase it goes up so much people start defaulting on their direct debits . I'm reading my meters every 2 weeks , spoke to them the other day told them they can see my consumption is loads lower than what they are charging and they said they will review it in a few months ! Don't think so they can review it end of April thanks . I'm looking on paying on receipt of bill , just waiting to find out what those prices are going up to , going to call them ( Scottish power ) again tomorrow.

ssd · 23/03/2022 20:37

I have a bog standard ikea dishwasher. I always use the fast wash instead of the eco setting as i thought it was cheaper. Maybe im wrong?

dementedpixie · 23/03/2022 20:38

Paying on receipt of bill can cost more than paying by direct debit.

Remember fixed rates can be much higher than the price cap rates and you don't have to agree to a new fixed rate rather than the standard variable rate

pumpkinpie01 · 23/03/2022 20:44

@dementedpixie I worked out the difference on my February's bill with what I'm on now and a pay on receipt of bill and it was £9 ish extra a month , think I would prefer to pay that than be ripped off every month

Fast settings use more energy. Eco mode is slow because slow is cheap. (Similar to how you use less fuel driving at 50mph than you do at 80mph)

Why not just adjust your DD amount to reflect your expected energy consumption based on last year? (Add an extra £9pm if you like)

dementedpixie · 23/03/2022 20:52

I can adjust my direct debit up and down very easily so I can tailor it to match what i am using

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 23/03/2022 20:52

@BeautifulGreenEyes

Oh FFS! Hmm How can ANYONE have an energy bill of nearly TEN THOUSAND POUNDS A YEAR, especially with only 2 people? Confused Are you powering Blackpool illuminations *@Veuvelily* ???

I am genuinely struggling to believe some of these stories tbh.

I’m inclined to agree with you. It’s scaremongering. I notice they haven’t been back on to answer an earlier posters question (which they asked twice) as to whether it’s a fixed price quote or not…
pumpkinpie01 · 23/03/2022 20:53

Tried that , their system won't let me and the humans on the phone won't either 😫 I was paying £104 with orbit that went bust , Scottish power were asking for £244, got it down to £216 so far , my January consumption was £186, feb - £137 and March looks to be £115-£120 . So will see what April's rates are then renegotiate/argue with them . Don't see why my money should be sat in their account .

He should be chancellor. He’d be a lot better than the one we’re stuck with at the moment…
Veuvelily · 23/03/2022 20:55

For the non believers

The boiler is new and the system serviced. I have a very reliable plumber who knows the system very well. He was the one who told me that we could get a timer for the hot water but realistically it shouldn’t make much difference because there is an internal thermostat on it.
I haven’t looked at the bills yet, will have to wait til tomorrow as I have a vision problem- migraine coming!

You need your usage in kWh
Do you have a debit balance on the account?
What sort of tariff is it?

BeautifulGreenEyes · 23/03/2022 21:01

Well it's obviously WRONG @Veuvelily !!!

gogohm · 23/03/2022 21:05

2 of us, 3 floors, £143 a month. But our house is only 14 years old.

TrickyD · 23/03/2022 21:06

Here is our new charge:

Estimated Annual Cost
£7,156.53
New Direct Debit (Estimated Annual Cost ÷ 12)
£596.38

Previous DD £380 per month.

I’d get your meters checked to see they are running accurately.

BeautifulGreenEyes · 23/03/2022 21:12

I don't know anyone in real life who has such outlandish bills. The most anyone's has gone up is from £150 a month dual fuel to £233, and they have a 4 bed home with a family of 7.

How the fuck are they making bills of £800 a month for 2 people? Clearly an error.

mateysmum · 23/03/2022 21:13

Plumber is being ridiculous. You are wasting money keeping the water hot all the time. We have our water on once a day for an hour and it's plenty. If one of us wants a bath in the evening we just flick it on at the boiler for 10mins and that's enough. If I understand correctly and you are using the immersion heater that is far more expensive than using the central heating/water controller.
I think you should also start doi g what we always used to do in the bad old days! Keep rooms you don't use at a lower temp and shut the doors. Keep doors to rooms closed generally so you are avoiding draughts. In fact go round and check for drafts and fix them. And... You may need to turn the thermostat down a degree.

How do you 'not agree'?

I called Eon and they refused to change it, they said it was a realistic projection and that they have a duty to prevent me from getting into debt. Other than a mortgage, now paid off, I have never been in debt in my life.

Chakraleaf · 23/03/2022 21:14

Mines 300 ... small 4 bed....its going to go up too...

VanGoghsDog · 23/03/2022 21:14

Oh, and no, you cannot pay on receipt of bill if you're on any type of deal, paying by DD is invariably part of the terms of the deal.
