Chancellor’s spring statement

AIBU to think that today we are about to be hugely disappointed by what Rishi says in his spring statement and just to realise just how out of touch he is with the grim reality that normal people (I.e. not millionaire politicians) in the Uk face?

My prediction is that he won’t back down on the 1.25% increase in NI contributions that he is making people pay from April. There will be a paltry reduction in fuel duty (maybe a few pence if we are lucky - but that will easily be cancelled out within a few days as prices increase to compensate). Maybe he will reduce the duty on champagne this time or some other gimmicky sweetener (wasn’t it Prosecco last time?). He might raise the threshold from which people have to start paying tax but for most working families that won’t make a jot of difference.

So it feels like we are sitting ducks and that as time goes by more and more people end up really struggling.

Yep Richy Rishi doesn't care about us.

Kukdoos · 23/03/2022 12:45

Exactly user1497207191
Not one cared a jot about us excluded - instead, we were accused of working cash in hand, and why did we expect help when we didn't pay tax...

It's amazing. The 'I'm alright jacks' are suddenly so vocal now they're being affected.

Oh and I'm a small business owner. Barely made it out, this is the final nail for me.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 23/03/2022 12:48

He’s already harping on about Ukraine and responsibility for the economy so he’s already lining up the excuses…

@James44

The money has to come from somewhere to pay for Furlough and NHS overtime. Amongst other claims on our money. Neutral Question: Have there been proposals from other parties on a way forward? I don't recall seeing any real ideas.
Not looking hard are you?

A windfall tax will generate 10s of billions across the sector - remember the profits many oil companies are making are totally unexpected.
If many EU countries can do this, what is so different about UK ?

Wealth tax and changes to council tax bandings to the high band houses, with exceptions for house rich, cash poor owners.

MoiraNotRuby · 23/03/2022 12:50

I'm watching now and feeling sick. How fucking dare he use Ukraine in this way. Tories were already a greedy selfish uncaring party.

Ukraine will hit us here though, don’t you think?

5p off a litre of fuel, for next 12 months

MoiraNotRuby · 23/03/2022 12:54

0 VAT on solar panels and wind turbines.

(Who the fuck can afford them anyway)

RagzRebooted · 23/03/2022 12:55

It's gone up 30p+ in the last few months, so that's not a huge help really, is it!
LemonMuffins · 23/03/2022 12:55

No VAT on your solar panels... Hmm

RagzRebooted · 23/03/2022 12:57

@MoiraNotRuby

0 VAT on solar panels and wind turbines.

(Who the fuck can afford them anyway)

Well that's totally solved my energy bills concerns then.
DidymusAmbrosius · 23/03/2022 12:58

Not VAT on energy saving materials.

He's having a fucking laugh.

RagzRebooted · 23/03/2022 12:58

@LemonMuffins

No VAT on your solar panels... Hmm
Tax cuts for the wealthy then, really. Typical tories.
MoiraNotRuby · 23/03/2022 13:01

I've just checked MSE, solar panels cost on average 4800. Somehow I won't be rushing out to get one 'and save myself £300 a year'....

Wilma55 · 23/03/2022 13:01

Nic threshold up to same as tax from July

LemonMuffins · 23/03/2022 13:01

NI threshold increased by £3000.

CurzonDax · 23/03/2022 13:02

Yep - this one actually made me LOL. I'd love some solar panels on my roof, but definitely can't afford them (even with all the various schemes etc, I have looked). I doubt this )% VAT is suddenly going to make me able to afford them. Just seems something Sunak can say he has done 'to help', but in reality, it will help very few, and certainly not the majority of working families.
GiraffesInScarfs · 23/03/2022 13:02

I can't believe they think that will make any noticeable difference. 😒

GiraffesInScarfs · 23/03/2022 13:03

Particularly when they're still increasing NI on everything above the threshold! What a joke.

Alexandra2001 · 23/03/2022 13:03

@LemonMuffins

NI threshold increased by £3000.
... but wiped out by the rises to NI... so where is the billions for the NHS actually coming from?

Public service cuts in other areas, thats where.

Dinorawr22 · 23/03/2022 13:03

Knew it. Knew they wouldn't do anything to help. Same old sh*T Tory's looking after themselves.
There's going to be so much blood on their hands come winter.

MoiraNotRuby · 23/03/2022 13:03

How will National insurance thing affect people, isn't it going up?

EvilPea · 23/03/2022 13:04

I’d have solar panels and rain water toilets if I owned my house. But I rent, as do 1/3 of the population.

Dinorawr22 · 23/03/2022 13:04

I bet Martin Lewis is having a stroke over this.

Alexandra2001 · 23/03/2022 13:06

The 5p cut in fuel duty will be eaten up by further rises in fuel prices.

Does he not grasp that fuel has gone up 50% in the last 12months? something which he has benefited from in the form of extra vat and duty.
