Likelihood of 12 yr DS enjoying “Turning red”?

Yes, yes - I know i should be raising a boy that will feel so comfortable around periods, he’ll be happy to insert his partner’s own tampon for her in full flow.

But back on planet earth, when it’s family movie night (single parent) and the end of a hectic week, and I would love to kick back with a movie that we all enjoy rather than him feeling embarrassed (as we are all vulnerable to do so no tweens / teen years over… well, anything) and complaining… is he likely to be a bit embarrassed about it? Ie full on period talk?

Many thanks

I'm interested to hear, I have two 12 year olds, obviously they know about periods etc but am interested to know if they will enjoy it.

I was going to write a proper reply, but your OP is so supercilious and unpleasant, I don't think I'll bother. Hmm

15 year old DS watched it and said it was good. I was in the room but not paying attention to it.
17 year old DS has suggested we watch it this weekend.

Isn't the film just a metaphor for puberty? It's not an instructional video.

Are we reading the same OP?
SlipperyLizard · 18/03/2022 15:36

We watched it with our 10 & 12 year old girls. We all hated it.

Don’t think there’s too much period talk for a boy, though - to be honest, the “red panda as metaphor for periods” went over my head (the mum initially thinks her daughter has started her periods, my brain then didn’t think the rest of the story was linked to them).

SheldonsStainedSpot · 18/03/2022 15:37

There’s a scene when the mum thinks the daughter has started her period and gives her a pile of different period products. And another scene where the mum turns up at the school to shout “you forgot your pads!” but those are the only direct period references.

The period stuff people are talking about is mainly the way the girls panda situation is a metaphor for periods.

thebellsesmereldathebells · 18/03/2022 15:37

I assume we are - it's the one in which people who think bringing boys up to be comfortable about periods live on a different planet, right? That OP?

sherbertdib · 18/03/2022 15:40

It's not about periods. Is it?

That went right over my head if so

Thought it was more about finding who you are as an adolescent and making your own way/breaking free from family expectations

That and Asian/Chinese parenting techniques

sherbertdib · 18/03/2022 15:41

My four year old likes it anyway. She thinks it's about a cute fluffy panda

Thank you all, well all except the departed

I thought the entire film was about an animated creature starting her period!
I’m wrong!

Ok, will give a go and report back if went down well

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle

I was baffled too

I expect the response we “missed” out on would have been a diatribe against my parenting

SaySomethingMan · 18/03/2022 15:49

Watched it with both girl and boy around similar ages. No one was even the least bit embarrassed by the period part. We certainly talk more about periods than in the film. Sure the mum is embarrassing but the period part? There’s nothing to it in there, really.
I’m guessing you’ve not seen it OP?

implantreplace · 18/03/2022 15:51

Good film?

TeddyisMydog · 18/03/2022 15:53

I only have young children so the whole period reference flew over their heads but I didn't realise the whole film was a metaphor for it, completely flew over my head! I think my partner would be just as baffled when I tell him 😂

@implantreplace

Good film?
No, the worst film Pixar have ever done imo Grin

I got completely wrong end of stick

I honestly thought the entire film was about periods!

So those who have seen… good film?

Ah

Danikm151 · 18/03/2022 15:57

It's more about not changing who you are and if you do, it's your choice.

The big deal about periods is because pads are explicitly mentioned which is very strange for a disney film.

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 18/03/2022 15:58

I also agree.

steff13 · 18/03/2022 15:59

My "boys" are 23 and 20 but they both liked it.

SheldonsStainedSpot · 18/03/2022 15:59

I really enjoyed the film and would vote yes to it being good :D
