Likelihood of 12 yr DS enjoying “Turning red”?

Yes, yes - I know i should be raising a boy that will feel so comfortable around periods, he’ll be happy to insert his partner’s own tampon for her in full flow.

But back on planet earth, when it’s family movie night (single parent) and the end of a hectic week, and I would love to kick back with a movie that we all enjoy rather than him feeling embarrassed (as we are all vulnerable to do so no tweens / teen years over… well, anything) and complaining… is he likely to be a bit embarrassed about it? Ie full on period talk?

Many thanks

@PinkSyCo

I was going to write a proper reply, but your OP is so supercilious and unpleasant, I don't think I'll bother. hmm

I thought the same…..Perhaps OP’s on her period. Blush

Jeez, your reply is worse. Just stop it

@implantreplace

Considering Enola holmes or Mitchell versus the machines

Any experience of river?

Seen both of these. DD loved Enola Holmes, DS not so much. We did all enjoy Mitchells vs the Machines - very silly and entertaining.

Spiderman No Way Home has just been released on Amazon Prime to purchase if that might be of interest too.

implantreplace · 18/03/2022 16:29

Oh yes!!! The Spider-Man one!!
Sorted
Thank you

I didn't enjoy Turning Red because I find overbearing parents really frustrating. I wanted to scream at the TV when Mei Mei is unable to make herself heard.

We're enjoying watching The Adam Project with DS. I think it's a 12 though so maybe not suitable for younger children.

DD3 and DS10 enjoyed Mitchell's Vs the Machines.

implantreplace · 18/03/2022 16:39

We thought the Adam project was BRILLIANT!!

I’m not even going to read all the comments
There are 2 scenes… maybe 3 where periods are mentioned
The rest of the time is all about growing up
Yes the panda is an allegory for the periods… but it’s just that
As any other growing up Disney movie is more about family, relationships, friendships - yes the mom shows up with a box full of sanitary products a couple of times… more an “embarrassing parent” situation really

Effitall · 18/03/2022 16:45

Ok I’ve completely missed something here, I thought the Panda was to represent turning into Kevin the teenager rather than periods, but that may be more to do with my own experience of being a teen!!

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 18/03/2022 16:45

It's OK and embarrassing in places because the mother is embarrassing not because of periods. It is about growing up and growing away from your parents towards your friends and being your own person, how issues pass through the generations and about teenage crushes that the girls have on boys. Encanto is so much better but you have probably seen that already.

My 10 year old daughter has now watched it twice my 14 year old daughter watched it a bit and wandered off. I thought it was sad because the mother was losing her daughter a bit and that is a bit too close to home for me.

blueberryporridge · 18/03/2022 16:51

So those who have seen… good film?

I watched it with DS aged 11. We both enjoyed it. There were a couple of scenes with references to periods but to be honest I didn't think the whole film was about that - I thought it was more about growing up generally and the need to come to terms with your own personality rather than following what earlier generations had chosen.

The animation and design "look and feel" was super, and there were some laugh-out-loud moments too.

Legoisthebest · 18/03/2022 16:56

Watched it today with my 13 year old daughter. We both loved it. The period bit is about 5 minutes of the whole film.
We both got quite emotional at the end.

KeyboardCat · 18/03/2022 17:20

My 6-year old and I have just watched it, we enjoyed it :)

My 12 year old son enjoyed it ‘not as bad as Soul, not as good as other Pixar films’! It’s not about periods, it just happens to mention that mums of 13 year old girls maybe thinking about this stuff!
My 10 year old daughter also enjoyed it. I thought it was ok.

WillWorkForShoes · 18/03/2022 19:21

Oh, and in places it made my kids really cringe. DH and I were laughing saying ‘aren’t you glad we don’t treat you like that?!’

NameChChChChanges1 · 18/03/2022 19:38

I have a DS a few thought your OP was funny. My DS too young Tom watch any films atm (at the Hey Duggee stage) but me and DH watched it and both really enjoyed it. It's very nostalgic for early 2000s.

NameChChChChanges1 · 18/03/2022 19:38

*I have a DS and thought

ShreddedMarmalade · 18/03/2022 19:48

I thought it was beautiful. My 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter loved it. Both cried at it. It's not just about periods!!!!

Florrieboo · 18/03/2022 19:50

I thought it was a bit strange that the mother of a 13 year old thought it was a "bit soon" for her daughter to be getting her period as lots of my daughters friends already have theirs at 10 and 11 and it brought up a conversation about "normal" period ages here.

We liked it though. My 12 year old son doesn't like animated movies anyway so would not sit through it.

Tonkerbea · 18/03/2022 19:56

I loved the soundtrack!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 18/03/2022 19:59

Turning red is a good 'home' film, wouldn't have gone to the cinema to see it and not sure I'd watch it again but 12 Yr old DD enjoyed it.

Enola Holmes and Mitchell are both good and a slightly more grown up film is Love and monsters which Dd enjoyed, a couple of swear words but otherwise suitable... nuclear fall out from breaking up an asteroid makes all cold blooded creatures giant.

ChirpyChirp · 18/03/2022 19:59

12 Yr old DS found it hilarious 😁 Especially the over-protective mother (that in no way reminds me of the person I am trying not to be). Definitely a hit here.

BurntO · 18/03/2022 20:00

It’s not about periods and it only references them a couple of times? Wasn’t a great movie though

dworky · 18/03/2022 20:23

Why would he necessarily be embarrassed? If you've brought him up to know about menstruation and it's perfectly normal but crucial function in all human life, I can't see why there would be a problem.
Is it possible it's you who feels shame regarding the menstual cycle?
