To give DD codeine when she has Covid

She's 32, got horrendous headache, joint pains etc. Paracetamol isn't touching it.

I know ibuprofen was a no no for a bit when I had it. So probably avoid that but can't find anything about codeine.

I took it for around 6 days when I had Covid due to the bone crushing headache I had, and DH took it to stop him coughing at night. No issues.

ThesecondLEM · 17/03/2022 06:48

Thank you. I'm really worried about her. She's not vaccinated (too scared of side effects,,, whole other thread). I had covid previous to being vaccinated and I had never been so ill in my life

Ibruprofen is fine for when you have Covid, I can't remember why they said not to take it originally but it's fine.

Ponoka7 · 17/03/2022 07:01

They thought that it had the same effect on Covid as it does on Chicken pox, then found out that it's safe. My DD is on flu capsules that have both in. Luckily she is prescribed migraine medication and that was the only thing that touched the headache. If over the counter meds aren't helping, get her to contact the GP. My DD has needed an antibiotic for a throat infection due to Covid. Last time I needed them.

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 17/03/2022 07:03

I would definitely give it to her. No point suffering unnecessarily.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/03/2022 07:08

The NHS page on Covid suggests giving ibruprofen now.

Porcupineintherough · 17/03/2022 07:08

The important thing w COVID is not to give anything eg sleeping tablets which inhibits the breathing reflex. So ibruphrophen is fine and I would think codeine is too.

gogohm · 17/03/2022 07:25

Ibroprofen is fine, far better than paracetamol

babytum · 17/03/2022 07:34

Take both paracetamol and ibuprofen and stagger them at regular intervals throughout the day. Up to max 4 g of paracetamol , so 1 g every 4 to 6 hours and up max 1200 mg ibuprofen every 6-8 hours. You can also use codeine as required up to a max 240 mg in 24 hours. Just check the paracetamol or ibuprofen isn’t a mix with codeine though, it’ll say on the packet. Just use the codeine here and there but take the other 2 regularly. Much better effect all round.

Poor thing hope she feels better soon. I’ve had it twice, not fun

Bagelsandbrie · 17/03/2022 07:38

I take Cocodamol 30/500 for lupus pain and took it as usual throughout my bout of covid (Gp said it was fine) so I’m sure the lower over the counter dose of 8/500 will be fine.

TypicaIMe · 17/03/2022 07:41

I take codeine daily for RA pain. I currently have covid quite badly and I've found that when my codeine wears off, my symptoms are much more pronounced. It's the only thing that's giving me some relief.

SheWoreYellow · 17/03/2022 07:44

Try ibuprofen first.

ThinWomansBrain · 17/03/2022 07:44

I think cocodomol is available OTC, but codeine is prescription only - so if it's been prescribed for her then probably fine, or check with the GP that prescribed it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/03/2022 08:35

Solpadeine has codeine in it and also paracetamol iirc, you can take it for 3 days. Double check the ingredients as it either has ibruprofen or paracetamol so you don't want to double up.

cadburyegg · 17/03/2022 08:51

I have covid atm and been taking ibuprofen for headaches and muscle aches, which has helped. I'd use cocodamol as a last resort, which you can buy from the pharmacy OTC. I wouldn't give codeine unless it had been prescribed

Co-codamol is codeine.
SartresSoul · 17/03/2022 08:55

I’d try ibuprofen first, it definitely isn’t a no-no with covid. That was a myth thrown around at the start of the pandemic which has since been busted.

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/03/2022 09:12

She’s 32, what does she think?

Nicholethejewellery · 17/03/2022 09:21

Don't know where you are OP but in UK you can't get codeine without a prescription, it's a class B drug (or class A if a solution for injection).

Nurofen Plus contains ibuprofen and codeine, co-codamol contains paracetamol and codeine. Both are available over the counter and are legal (provided you don't try to separate the codeine of course, easy with the Nurofen Plus but harder with co-codamol).

Watch the strength though - co-codamol especially is available with different amounts of codeine in. The more the better really so I use Nurofen Plus.

BakedTattie · 17/03/2022 09:21

I’ve got covid and I’m taking solpadene (which has paracetamol and codeine) and ibruprofen.

Along with anything else that will help. Why suffer when there’s a tablet that will help?!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/03/2022 09:22

Sounds like she's really poorly and maybe can't think straight and needs someone else to help suggest something.
Lillyhatesjaz · 17/03/2022 09:23

Codeine can inhibit breathing for some people so maybe don't give it to her unless she has had it before with no problem

NerrSnerr · 17/03/2022 09:48

If she is that poorly that she isn't able to make her own decisions about medication then you need to call the doctor.

ThesecondLEM · 17/03/2022 13:10

She's perfectly able to make decisions, however she has covid so I went to the chemist on her behalf. I mentioned her age so people didn't worry I was giving codeine to a three year old

@Nicholethejewellery I'm in the UK, it is available from pharmacy at the lower dose.
