Was this delivery driver being rude?

Swizzel · 16/03/2022 15:03

Hi all - not a big thing, but I know that it's going to bug me all day long.

I had a Tesco order delivered this morning. One of the items I had ordered was a small joint of beef (1.25kg) - what I got was a joint that was actually 2.5kg. Now, I realise that sometimes weights can vary, but in this case the difference in price was obviously double what I had intended to pay, and took me over my weekly budget. On this basis, I asked the delivery driver to take the joint of beef back as I didn't want it. His reply to me was "Yeah, it's not like you could cut it in half and freeze the rest of it, is it?"

I didn't manage to formulate a reply to his comment before he left, I have autism and can sometimes take a little while to process what people say. I was already flustered, trying to get the shopping out of the crates and into my bags by the front door as quickly as possible, as the driver was in a hurry (I'm disabled, so I was doing it one-handed whilst using my walking stick to balance). However, I've been thinking on it for the last few hours, and it's really bugging me. I think he was being rude, but don't know whether to complain, or whether I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.

For context, we usually have our Tesco order delivered on a Thursday morning when my husband is at home to unload it all. I could only book a Wednesday slot this week, and decided that I could manage to unload a small order on my own. Because of my health conditions, it's really difficult and painful to do it, so I wonder whether I'm just being over-sensitive?

I think he was just meaning it wasn’t a good substitution. No rude at all.

TwoDaysOff · 16/03/2022 15:07

Usually subs are charged at the lower price?
On that basis I would have taken it.
But yes, he was a little arsey

SparkleSpangle · 16/03/2022 15:08

Maybe, maybe not. Hard to tell without being there and hearing him say it.

I'd be surprised if he was being rude deliberately, it could cost him his job.

RealRaymondReddington · 16/03/2022 15:08

Perhaps a bit sarcastic of him, but not to the extent that I'd think any more of it. It wouldn't be enough for me to complain as a one off, of it happened again then I may do.

Bless you, it's cute you read it that way. But yeah he was being sarcastic (I might be wrong but seems that way). He's right in a way but like you say, if that's the money you wan the d to spend then you have every right to send back

Ooh good point, the other half was likely free
BottleBrushTree · 16/03/2022 15:11

Could be rude, could just be a comment, try not to let it bother you.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 16/03/2022 15:11

God why does everyone want to make a complaint about something someone says or does...I'd have retorted with something then thought no more about it.

cherrytreecottage · 16/03/2022 15:11

I feel like it was probably an unnecessary comment, although I suspect he wasn't intending to be rude to you personally.
If you mentioned it's over double the size you ordered, perhaps he felt the need to be cocky and point out that you could cut it in half. However, he's missing the point that it's not about the size - it's the money.

I order from Tesco every week, although not their joints of meat! If something isn't available, I often get the larger pack size or alternative at no additional cost. So last week they had no 500g frozen peas so they gave me 1kg but only charged me for what I ordered. Is that the same with meat? The reason I ask is that could be why he made the comment I.e you're not being charged more so just cut it in half!

Although if that was the case, he could have worded it like that!

How bloody patronising 🙄

OP, he might have been genuine because when that happens to us (DH cooks the Sunday roasts), we sometimes can't cut it in half and freeze due to the shape. You know how some sort of tail off into a point at the end?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 16/03/2022 15:12

Subs are always charged at the lower price, so although he was rude, he did have a point.

BurntO · 16/03/2022 15:13

It’s no big deal

Bellyups · 16/03/2022 15:13

Yabu

Nicholethejewellery · 16/03/2022 15:13

Did he actually take it back?

If not, definitely complain if they've charged you for the more expensive item, use his rudeness as leverage.

Is it an actual sub though?

Normally it says 'typical price' on the website and them sometimes (as in OP's case) the price is much much higher. Morrisons have a habit of doing this.

Tesco have a little disclaimer written underneath all of their meat joints that says : The chosen price and weight of this product is a guide only and may vary. You will be charged depending on the weight of the product picked on day of collection/delivery

Sadly, that means they no longer price match substitutions on those items, my online receipt charged me the full price of the large joint.

Move on.

Babyboomtastic · 16/03/2022 15:14

They don't charge for more expensive substitutions. The bigger piece should have been the same price as the smaller one.

Peasandcabbage · 16/03/2022 15:15

Yeah I think he was probably just confused, you would not be paying for it, it's the same thing you ordered just extra.

I'm also not sure what they do with returns? Often drivers have said to me just keep it, say it's a completely different sub, as it will just be binned. Like if they have been driven about for hours I don't think it goes back on the shelf. But I could be wrong.

Wallabyone · 16/03/2022 15:15

The way it was phrased was definitely sarcastic - otherwise he would have said, could you chop it in half and freeze it? I wouldn't complain, but I wouldn't worry about it either-he was rude though.

thebellsesmereldathebells · 16/03/2022 15:15

Yeah. blatantly he was rude.

I wouldn't complain though. I'd just give him a good hard stare next time I see him.

MushroomCow99 · 16/03/2022 15:16

He was rude.

But I'd let it go. If he makes another rude comment then I'd complaint.

linerforlife · 16/03/2022 15:16

Yeah OP is right, items like meat joints the price is a guide and they charge you the actual price on the label. He wasn't being funny OP, I wouldn't think any more of it Smile

TristramBrandy · 16/03/2022 15:17

What would you their response would be?

Btw, if it is a substitution then it is almost certain to be charged at the price of the smaller piece.

TristramBrandy · 16/03/2022 15:19

Just seen the point about subs for meat.

Still, what would you like their response to your complaint to be?
