AIBU to think that Sainsbury’s shouldn’t sell Russian vodka?

I’ve just done some shopping in Sainsbury’s and was surprised to see the J J Whitley Russian vodka bottles on the shelves.

These are the ‘Artisanal Russian Vodka’ and the ‘Blood Orange Russian Vodka’ which are labeled ‘distilled and bottled in the Russian Federation. (I was in a rush and didn’t have time to speak with a staff member).

What should Sainsburys do, throw them away? Since Sainsburys have already paid for them it'll be them who lose out here.

LuckyWithMyLot · 16/03/2022 14:02

If you want something done, contact someone high up. No point bothering the staff in the shop, they won't have a clue.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/03/2022 14:03

Better than binning them would be selling them and donating the profits to one of the charities.

InMySpareTime · 16/03/2022 14:04

You saw them on the shelves, and thought they shouldn't sell them, so why are the pictures of bottles in your trolley?
Just because they sell them doesn't mean you have to buy them.
Are you feeling guilty because you bought them thinking they weren't Russian?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/03/2022 14:06

I think they said they wouldn’t buy any more, not that they’d throw away what they had.

SparkleWhale · 16/03/2022 14:07

Sainsbury's have already bought them. It's a waste to throw them out. They just won't order more.

Unsureaboutit9 · 16/03/2022 14:07

Sainsburys sent an email to all customers explaining this, I’m sure it’s on their website too.

This article explains why they are continuing to sell that particular product.

Aworldofmyown · 16/03/2022 14:13

It's already here and paid for. If they order more, that's a different matter.

luxxlisbon · 16/03/2022 14:15

Why is it in your trolley then? 😂

DelilahBucket · 16/03/2022 14:15

Oh the irony! "Sainsbury's shouldn't be selling the items I bought" 🙄. It's okay that you bought them though because you were rushing and couldn't moan to a member of staff.

ScreamIntoTheWind · 16/03/2022 14:17

A quick Google before posting on MN would have told the OP there was no need for her post.

The moral high ground does look so high when the company you’re criticising has thought things through and explained their reasoning.

NanFlanders · 16/03/2022 14:19

Polish vodka is much better anyway - ideally from your local Polish shop. Drink it with apple juice.

ShakespearesSisters · 16/03/2022 14:21

Sell what they have, its already been paid for. Just don't buy more.

SpeckledlyHen · 16/03/2022 16:18

As others have said, it has already been paid for by Sainsburys so they have to pass on that stock. It's up to you whether you buy it or not though.

Blossomtoes · 16/03/2022 16:21

This. I’ll agree they shouldn’t buy any more but I don’t see any issue with selling what’s already in stock.
Baaaa · 16/03/2022 16:23

Might as well sell what they've already paid for. And stop putting stuff in your trolly if you're not going to buy it.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/03/2022 16:25

Why not re-read the thread about why are Morrisons selling Russian vodka from a couple of weeks ago - I expect the responses are similar.
(I recall that pretty universally they've bought and paid for existing stock, selling it or chucking it will neither harm nor benefit Russia)
They aren't forcing you to buy it.

ImprobablePuffin · 16/03/2022 16:34

If you had just done even 30 seconds of research before posting you'd look much less silly.

BourbonVanilla · 16/03/2022 16:39

This cancel culture is getting out of hand... 🙄

TheHoptimist · 16/03/2022 16:52

Honestly? Did you read the bonkers thread about someone storming into Morrisons and abusing the store manager?

If so I think that you have the MN collective view on this

The professionally offended are jumping with glee at war in Ukraine.

CallMeMabel · 16/03/2022 16:55

Jesus, this has been done to death. Don't fucking buy it if it offends you and move on.

Hadjab · 16/03/2022 16:56

Here's my take on it. Global corporations such as MacDonalds can and have shut restaurants, stores etc. in Russia. Who exactly is that harming? I'm going to throw out a wild guess and say the average Joe who works there. Do you really think Putin gives a shit about his own people? Do you think he's sitting in the Kremlin crying because Sainsbury's are no longer stocking his third favourite brand of vodka? Or do you think he's sitting pretty, knowing he has us over a barrel (of gas) and money laundering?

Lockheart · 16/03/2022 17:00

But you put it in your trolley to buy it anyway?

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 16/03/2022 17:03

Yawn. Again?

They've already bought it. The money is spent. Would you prefer they chuck it in the bin?
