Does this really warrant A+E?

On Sunday DH (35) was running round the garden with our 4yo and his cousins. He jarred his back and it was sore Sunday night and really sore all day Monday. Monday pm he was feeling ill, tired and achey and went to bed. Today he's woken up iller than he's ever felt. He has chills, high temp of 38.6 and a horrible taste in his mouth. He has slept all day. Negative covid test.
We used 111 for advice and a 111 operator called him and told him to go to A+E within the hour.

We are a bit 🤔 do you think it really warrants A+E?

@FloraPostePosts you’ve misread my post. If the only option now GPs don’t do out of hours and pharmacists are either closed or limited in their advice obviously 111 is what you try. For antibiotics for cystitis they’ve been great. I’m just saying quite often the algorithm says ‘ambulance!’ ‘A and E!’ When you know that’s not needed. As I also said, I wouldn’t advise op not to go.

Sapphireskies · 15/03/2022 18:55

Is this a serious question? YES go to A and E. it sounds like sepsis to me, he's obviously very unwell.

PukkaP · 15/03/2022 18:59

I normally say no to these "Should I go to A&E?" threads, but in this case, I would hesitate. Just go. Now

luxxlisbon · 15/03/2022 19:10

Of course there is a chance it could be nothing, but equally it might not be. I don’t know why you seem to want to trust randoms on the internet over 111.

Chely · 15/03/2022 19:14

If 111 says so then go.

jazzyoldjim · 15/03/2022 19:28

Thanks for the advice. DH is insisting it is just a fluey type illness and if he goes to a&e he will be wasting their time. He says his back doesn't hurt anymore. He wants to wait to see how he is in the morning.

My usual tactics with people who don't want to follow sensible advice is to query where there will is and ask if there insurance is up to date I mean it works on my dad as does the question.....so what was your funeral music again?

Whatwouldyoudo24 · 15/03/2022 19:46

As someone who had sepsis and honestly didn’t feel that bad when I arrived at hospital, if this is 111s concern then definitely get checked out! It ended up being one of the scariest times of my life and I honestly wasn’t sure if I was going to make it out the other end at one point. I was very lucky to have been sent to A&E when I was!
I hope your DH feels much better soon and it’s nothing too serious, but better safe than sorry!

ChloeHel · 15/03/2022 19:54

Does he have any other symptoms OP? Any nausea and vomiting? Or reduced urination?

It could be a coincidence and he may have caught a cold/flu type virus from the cousins or it could be that 111 referred because of the risk of sepsis. The fact he has had recent trauma is a risk factor, and the high temperature would indicate an infection. Sepsis is a life threatening condition and as he falls into the risk factor category I would recommend following guidance already given and take him to A&E.

If you have a BP monitor I would advise using it. If his BP is low and HR high then get him straight there!

maeveiscurious · 15/03/2022 20:13

Well I just got sent to A&E and the team I need to see had gone home and I could see a doctor but because I need to seen by a specialist unit there was no point hanging around.

All medication has to be approved by clinical team who have gone home

Yet I was sent to A&E 🤯

Throckmorton · 15/03/2022 20:14

Well, if its sepsis, he risks being dead by morning. Personally I'd follow the advice given by the medical personnel go to A&E.

maeveiscurious · 15/03/2022 20:14

If it presents as sepsis I would go as it moves quickly
SleepyRich · 15/03/2022 20:57

If things are improving/everything working well then great. If unsure/still in doubt check his obs- count how many breaths he takes over a minute (without him knowing what you are doing), over 20 is abnormal, over 25 is conceening.

Feel his wrist to find his pulse, Google it and there will be pictures/guide if you're not sure. Over 90 abnormal, over 130 is concerning.

Being in normal range doesn't mean all is well, but if one or both of these are concerningly out of range then it suggests serious illness which he should absolutely see a doctor in regards.

OrlandointheWilderness · 15/03/2022 21:05

You've been given medical advice, I would urge you to take it.

Hunbabe · 15/03/2022 21:19

Please just go if 111 have told you to. I ended up in a and e, thank goodness, when I was ill with an infection, and if I hadn't I don't know what may have happened. Hope he's better soon.

CharlotteRose90 · 15/03/2022 21:30

I actually love these threads . Why create them and don’t listen to the replies. He was told to go to A&E that’s all you need. As someone that’s had sepsis good luck to him as hell need it now if he refuses to go any longer.

peachy3 · 15/03/2022 21:47

@jazzyoldjim

Thanks for the advice. DH is insisting it is just a fluey type illness and if he goes to a&e he will be wasting their time. He says his back doesn't hurt anymore. He wants to wait to see how he is in the morning.
So what is the point of this thread OP?
peachy3 · 15/03/2022 21:49

Also my grandad had these symptoms twice and almost died twice of sepsis. You’re both thick if you’re willing to risk it, you’ve been advised to go to A&E they wouldn’t tell him to go if they thought he just had the flu based on what you’ve told them. Don’t be so idiotic.

msc6199 · 15/03/2022 21:52

Yes??? If 111 have advised then you should go. Their disposition is based on the anwers you've given. Pathways is a very robust system which has been designed and updated by medical professionals as research goes on.

Why bother phoning 111 for advice if you're only going to question their advice? On MN at that!

Iamkmackered1979 · 15/03/2022 21:53

so what was the point in calling 111 then? Clearly your husband knows better? What a waste of time. It could be anything or it could be nothing, you’ve phoned for a reason so at least take the advice and get seen!.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 15/03/2022 21:58

Apologies I’m confused, where has sepsis come into this?

How can a jarred back cause sepsis?

Starlightstarbright1 · 15/03/2022 22:04

I was advised to take my ds to a&e once within the hour. I apoologised to a &e staff. He was adnitted within 4 hours in surgery in 12. It may be nothing but he should follow medical advice

Goldenharp · 15/03/2022 22:15

A colleague had a fluey type illness and insisted he just needed to sleep it off. His wife called a doctor and the next thing my colleague knew was that he was waking up minus quite a few toes and it was considered incredibly lucky that his mind was unaffected. His wife saved his life. It was meningitis. He had already lapsed into a coma by the time he was rushed to hospital. He had months of convalescence.

Goldenharp · 15/03/2022 22:18

It's obviously not just a back injury. I suspect it never was - I think he was getting sick then and the virus was causing the back pain. To be honest I'd be concerned about the children and whether he was contagious.

Iusedtoliveinsanfrancisco · 15/03/2022 22:26

He doesn’t want to go to A&E because he feels too ill to move and he’s not telling you. that fact alone means he needs to go.
