To think they should vet people offering home to refugees?

All morning I’ve heard people being interviewed about the Ukraine refugee scheme. Even interviewers are minimising the risks of not vetting people taking refugees in.

I think this is going to be a great risk to vulnerable children and adults.

Even dogs who need a home are lucky enough to get their new homes vetted under quite infamously strict criteria.

I know nearly all people offering this help will be genuine but I can’t help think a tiny few will be nasty in quite a few different ways.

I really hope that it works out well and that the charities with resources to vet before recommending a named family will step in and gatekeeper this - but perhaps that’s why they asked for you to name someone.

I haven’t a spare room currently or I’d be on the list- but you do need a car where I live not to be isolated - how will that works out for people

@DesertStorms

I just heard a government minister saying the vetting system isn’t in place yet and will be a ‘light fingered approach’ . Hmm.
I do hope you misheard that and they actually said light touch. Light fingered is a euphemism for being a thief!

I suppose it's all in the badus that people are desperate and need somewhere to stay quickly, but I certain that some of these poor people will be exploited and badly treated, not to mention the risk to children of living with unvetted strangers.

Lots of people supporting the scheme will have entirely good motives but surely we know that there will be lots more in it for what they can gain. For example we know that single mothers are targeted by paedophiles, why wouldn't we expect that displaced women with young children wouldn't be targeted in the same way?

It will be hard to find the balance between enough checks and making the scheme to cumbersome

"On the other hand, vetting would be at most background checks. It wouldn't show up some of the concerns raised above, e.g. people hoping to house females that they can have sex with, unless they've been convicted of an offence in the past."

Yes I think there are concerns about putting woman and children in all male households.

Totally agree, they could be entering the home of a paedophile with their children or complete psychopath. It’s unlikely but always possible.

I think single men hoping to house attractive young women and lure them into bed is decidedly creepy and abusive of the power dynamic in this situation. But it's not illegal, and the men wouldn't necessarily be barred via any kind of background check. Even a home interview they'd be unlikely to fail (as I assume they'd have the sense not to let on their aspirations!) So ensuring that there's support and an option to help young women move on somewhere else if they find themselves in a difficult situation seems to me much more valuable than vetting itself

I don't actually think this is big the risk anyway.

The risk would be men (and women) looking for essentially slave labour and children to abuse.

I also think there's quite a risk to those taking them in. Again, the vast majority will be completely genuine and grateful for the kindness, but there will also be criminals amongst them.

I do think this is a risk.

Mainly, because there are a lot of men who feel entitled to sex with women. Especially where they have shown a shred of kindness to the women OR they feel the women owe them.

Though I don't think it will be single men.

Though I do agree with pp that couples could also be a risk.
