PoAhOh · 15/03/2022 09:36

My DC asked for a Colin Caterpillar cake for their birthday, carefully brought it home but it's broken in 2 😱
I'm crap at any type of artsy, bakery stuff, what can I do ?
Your help would be much appreciated !!

it's on a board... how did it break?

Sarahcoggles · 15/03/2022 10:41

Can you afford another one, if it’s so important to your child?

TheSpottedZebra · 15/03/2022 10:46

Buy a bag of baby colins and declare with a straight face that they're his babies.

Bananabutter · 15/03/2022 10:49

I would just chuck it and buy another one 🤷‍♀️

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/03/2022 10:49

How much do they cost. If you’ve got to buy ribbon, smarties, chocolate and spend your time, how much more would it cost to buy another?
(And eat the first yourself Grin)

ouch321 · 15/03/2022 10:57

Push the 2 bits together.

Maybe sieve icing sugar over all of it as a distraction.

I doubt they'll notice really

Pombearsforthewin · 15/03/2022 10:57

Get some robust cocktail sticks. Insert into one half. Push other half into the one with cocktails sticks. Cover with melted chocolate (as per other posters suggestions). Just make sure that when you cut it to serve you pull it apart again and remove the cocktails sticks!

lemonnandliime · 15/03/2022 11:02

@PoAhOh

I did think about taking it back but I don't think I've the nerve 😕 It's a messy break, chocolate chipped off but completely severed in the middle. Thank you so much for all of your ideas I completely panicked. I'll buy chocolate, smarties & ribbon to see what I can do. Unfortunately my DC notices everything but they'll be upset for me worrying about it !
Did you damage it accidentally or was it like that when you opened the box and no way your fault?

If you didn't drop it or anything I would have no problem about taking it back.

Why you make a mess of a cake by drizzling chocolate on it and shoving it together with sweets and sticks if you bought it and it's not fit for purpose?

DysmalRadius · 15/03/2022 11:16

Only the section with the head lives on. {Not that this applies to Two Colins}

It can, depending on where it's cut, but usually it's just as dead as the other end.

Thewindwhispers · 15/03/2022 11:35

Shove it back together and pour smarties all over the join and tell dc it rained a birthday rainbow

Useranon1 · 15/03/2022 11:44

I would go back and exchange it

On what basis?!

wildthingsinthenight · 15/03/2022 11:45

@WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks

Glue together with melted chocolate and give him a "belt" of Smarties to hide the join
This
x2boys · 15/03/2022 12:06

Tell him you have got him a special edition "Clumsy Colin ,the Caterpillar?

youngestisapsycho · 15/03/2022 12:41

I still wanna know how it broke so bad? Must have dropped it?

Ncwinc · 15/03/2022 12:45

Could he be a Very Hungry Colin the Caterpillar?

Colin’s front bit, a wedge of something he’s ‘eating’ his way through and Colin’s back bit?

dizzydizzydizzy · 15/03/2022 12:46

Aww OP. I feel your pain. So sorry. Although I think it'll be fine - some great suggestions from PPs.

lemonnandliime · 15/03/2022 13:07

Erm

If the op has bought a product that's not fit for purpose on opening it (a smashed in half birthday cake) why would you not exchange it?

Honestly Mumsnet fries my brains at times.

Bananabutter · 15/03/2022 13:42

@lemonnandliime They didn’t sell it to her broken; she wouldn’t have chosen it.

So it’s broken because she didn’t transport it home carefully enough. Therefore it’s her issue to deal with.

If you walk out of a shop with a crockery set and drop it on the floor, they’re not going to replace it because you dropped it. It was in tact when sold.

Where did the OP say she damaged it herself?

I asked in one of my posts whether it was bought that easy or she damaged it, and I said if it was bought that way she should exchange it.

TyneTeas · 15/03/2022 14:00

Re the suggestions of a bandage, you could make it look like he was going into a cocoon?

SartresSoul · 15/03/2022 14:09

They’re only £7 aren’t they? I’d just buy another to save the hassle of melting chocolate to try fix it. Either that or I’d return it claiming it broke when you opened the box, I’m sure they’ll replace it.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2022 14:22

Where did the OP say she damaged it herself?

She said she "didn't have the nerve" to take it back which kind of implies it was fine when she bought it and then it got broken on the way home.

Bananabutter · 15/03/2022 14:24

@lemonnandliime She didn’t buy it with a hole in. She’d have noticed it.

youngestisapsycho · 15/03/2022 14:43

I've asked twice how it broke... OP hasn't been back and replied for a while...

PoAhOh · 15/03/2022 14:44

I carefully chose Colin as there were some broken ones, I think he wasn't iced to the board well enough so when the bag moved so did Colin 🥺

He cost £7 which I can't really afford again and I'm not a huge fan of chocolate cake !
I'll go shopping again tomorrow and try fixing him on Thursday. Don't worry I'll show you how he looks 😁

You've really made my day, haven't laughed so much in ages 😍

Thank you again, really great ideas. I'll see if I can buy him an extra head and make 2 or whether it will be easier sticking him back together ! I've been worried about totally spoiling him, might still happen 😂
