Cheapest place to live to commute to Fulham outside London

user1461609321 · 14/03/2022 16:33

Hi everyone

I am looking to move just outside of London but need to be able to commute to Fulham Broadway/ West Brompton and East Croydon stations easily

We need a 3 bed house, as kids getting older but tiny budget of £350,000

I am willing to move out of London and commute door to door 1hr to the above mentioned stations

I know Kent, Sussex etc are generally cheaper than London but unsure of which stations are easy to commute to and from these area's

Finally, do you know of any diverse areas slightly outside of south London that are affordable and easy to commute to and from daily with my budget?

Fulham and East Croydon are miles apart and different train lines etc. You really need to rethink your budget and commute...could you travel into central London then go back out again?

Kent/Sussex to Fulham would surely take two hours each way. If you including your drive from wherever you live to your local station. Also Kent and Sussex are v expensive.

Sorry but I really don't think you've thought this through.

Something like this in Haywards Heath?

Southern trains go into East Croydon and also into Clapham junction from where you can change to West Brompton. It's not really diverse though and I can't think of anywhere else that would fit that bill.

Would you consider a flat or maisonette?

OpheliaThrupps · 14/03/2022 16:57

Thank you Ophelia, this is the kind of thing I am looking for

I think as bonus you'd avoid travelling through zone 1, which makes commuting significantly cheaper.

Look at places on lines into Victoria. Around 20 - 25 minutes to East Croydon and 15 - 20 minutes to Fulham Broadway depending on connection times.

Currently in a maisonette and really want to purchase a house now if possible

Redhill, maybe? www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/120279566#/?channel=RES_BUY

Westfacing · 14/03/2022 17:12

How about London Borough of Sutton?

Trains go from Sutton to East Croydon, and to Clapham Junction to change to West Brompton.

Not sure the OP is over 60?

user1461609321 · 14/03/2022 17:16

Not over 60 no

Lol, indeed, scratch that, I didn't look at the property. Redhill still sort of works as location, although you won't get much for your money, it's not cheap.

Why not live just outside Croydon? On the Wimbledon side- Rent rather than buy if necessary(I think you should anyway if it’s new job and you don’t know the area) — there’s a regular train link loop with lots of stations on that line between Wimbledon and Croydon and Wimbledon then very easy for Fulham on tube.

user1461609321 · 14/03/2022 17:47

Currently in west Croydon, but can access east Croydon easily also

OP posts:
Duchess379 · 14/03/2022 19:56

Surrey is an option. You can get the train to Wimbledon & then the circle/district line into Fulham. I used to live in Addlestone, Surrey & commute this way. I was based in Fulham for work.

Someoneburntthetoastagain · 14/03/2022 20:07

Have you considered buying a house in Croydon, OP? It has a bad reputation on MN as I guess it’s not white enough, but it has a good housing stock and excellent transport links. Depending on which part of Croydon you buy in you can find something reasonable for your budget.

user1461609321 · 14/03/2022 20:29

Currently live in Croydon already in a nice residential road, but property is a maisonette and now need something a bit bigger, perhaps we should just stay in the local area

OP posts:
LittleGwyneth · 14/03/2022 21:16

I wouldn't be surprised if you could find something on the non London side of Croydon, which I think would be better. Hayward's Heath is nice enough, if a little bit suburban, but it's very white (or at least that's my perception of it - I could be wrong.)

DespairingHomeowner · 14/03/2022 21:48

Can you really buy a 3 bed house for 350k in these areas? I would have thought the bottom end for a 3 bed house in London suburbs is more around the 500k mark but happy to be wrong…

Clymene · 14/03/2022 22:03

East Grinstead? You can do West Brom in a smidge over an hour and East Croydon in 40 mins. Anywhere outside London is going to be less diverse tbh but I'd think the proximity to Gatwick would mean it's not a sea of white.
