While I personally happen to agree that "medium" is a BS job, it's actually surprisingly lucrative for some.

My step-mother is a "medium". She's also the 2nd highest earning member of my extended family, behind myself at #1, in a very well paid corporate executive job.

For the record, she's basically a huge scam. The woman is about as "psychic" as I am a professional figure skater.

But it is a legitimate "job" in that people seem to be happy to pay her actual money in bona fide transactions in exchange for her ... essentially making shit up.

If I'm being cynical, I'd reframe "medium" as "over-priced conversation partner for hire for the terminally credulous".

Step-mother seems to be raking in over 150k pa for it.

Which, again, is ridiculous and IMHO extremely unethical. But it's hardly "not a job" or even a "career" at that level of compensation.

Lots of people like labels and weird job titles now. it makes them feel important i suppose.. Nobody should need a person, who calls themselves an influencer, and most people dont really need a therapist of some sort.. There are more so called therapists in the country now, than there are cats and dogs.

Op you seen to mean “ things I don’t understand or agree with” by made up. I guess all jobs are made up at some point.

Is 'Minister for Brexit Opportunities' a Whitehall in-joke for someone about to get sacked?

Like 'being sent to the Centaur Office' in the Ministry of Magic being a euphemism for being sacked soon.
