21 years old boy - what would you have done?

My parents live in another country. They have been asked to give shelter to a 21 years old boy. He had just finished his compulsory military service in Ukraine and took a holiday to see his nan. War started and he wanted to go back to fight. His grandmother hid his passport and talked him out of it.
My parents are happy to give him a room, he seems a great boy. But my DF has pointed out that, the way things are going, he will probably feel guilty for all the rest of his life and that not fighting for his country will probably result in him never to return back. He also argues that it will affect his mental health taking into account that all his mates are fighting.
I somehow agree and I think that his grandmother should keep his passport, as in this way the choice is out of his hands and he can blame it on someone else in the future.
I would not care to be blamed for something like this.
My DF argues (and I see the logic) that he is a man and that he should be free to choose his life.

I agree with your DF - I'm pretty confident if I were a young Ukrainian man I'd want to fight not flee, its not her decision to make. If grandma won't give him his passport I'm pretty sure he could go to a Ukrainian embassy and they'd sort him out whichever country you're in

I wouldn't want any of my family members to fight in a war, but he's 21 and a grown man. It's his decision and as others have said, confiscating an adult's passport is completely wrong.

That's true regardless of why he wants the passport and where he's going. In response to the suggested hypothetical scenario that he were going to fight for ISIS, say, the reasonable response for a worried relative would be to tell him that you'd notify the police if he insisted he was going. Not take his passport.

Shamima Begum et al. were 15 years old - a very different situation.

He’s an adult but yes, I’m 100% with the grandma. I wouldn’t care if he hated me forever because of this.

My ds is 20 yo solider .. He is going to Poland in a week or so. Wish it was as simple as hiding his passport....
Sad

@FacebookPhotos

because this is all reminding me of all those girls who ran off to isis.

Returning home to fight for your own country against an invader is just not the same thing at all.

how is it not? we are all the same except for our beliefs and ideology.

OP asked "WWYD"

I doubt that I would hide a passport to stop my son or grandson from going off to fight. I might cry for hours about it, try to make them think hard, wait some days to decide, but I wouldn't hide a passport.

Yes. I would do this.

Sorry, very busy day!
His grandmother is a carer and cannot host him.
You are all right he is an adult.
No, he cannot travel without a passport.
No, they will not give him another one quickly as the Embassy cannot access the database.

And for those who wonder whether he is really 21...I do not understand what difference does ot make whether he is 21 or 25.
My DF analysis comes from a different angle: he used to be an army officer, and he probably knows that the guilt will be with him forever.
If I were the grandmother I would feel guilty forever not having hidden his documents.
My parents will give him shelter and a bicycle and he will probably find a job soon enough.
They will not mention this to anyone and nor will I.

@dworky

Your husband is insane.
Why?

What she do you think a person had the right to decide what they do!
