AIBU to be totally confused (cost of living crisis)

AIBU to not be able to understand/ grasp the scale of impending disaster that is building over the increased cost of living?

I genuinely don't see how millions of people with outgoings that are about to be actually higher than income is going to play out.

I'm not trying to be goady and obviously realise no-one has a crystal ball but am I missing something? Has this ever happened before in other recent times/ other cultures and what was the result. I can't even imagine what could happen.

I feel really clueless! Any ideas/ opinions/ further reading much appreciated 👍

@StarCat2020

it's illegal in the UK to increase rent by 20% within a 12months period Where did you get this from?
I was wondering the same as CAB doesn't mention this law on their website as I'm sure they would if true. The landlord can increase what they like, realistically it will be within market rates or tenants will leave and they won't get new ones, but with the shortage of rental properties and rise in interest rates and house prices, landlords are raising rent across the board due to market rates.

@Chloemol there’s very good reason to use credit cards if you put something on a credit card and the company goes bust the credit card company has the liability not you, you can protect the amount you owe against redundancy and sickness etc for a relatively small amount too so there’s nothing wrong with using credit providing you use it to your advantage.

@WhiteCatmas

Quote: “ We keep being told we deserve it because we vote for Tory governments. Isn't it worth remembering that most people don't vote Tory actually.”

They have a majority, quite a large one. If most people didn’t vote for the Tories they wouldn’t be in power.
Also, people who voted for Brexit, this is on you.

If most people didn’t vote for the Tories they wouldn’t be in power. As pointed out by a PP - this is factually incorrect.

Most governments in this country of whatever party are elected on a minority of the vote because of our utterly shit and outdated electoral system.

INeedNewShoes · 14/03/2022 09:20

A lot of these replies are saying people will have to cut back and eat more simply, stop Netflix etc.

There will be so many people who have already done that and who have no further steps they can take.

It’s incredibly worrying, especially because everyone will be feeling the pinch so less likely to donate to food banks or pick up shopping for a neighbour or whatever.

Anyone that believes there are loads of job vacancies right now wants to look at agency websites.

Boris lies

Abra1d1 · 14/03/2022 09:21

@Polyanthus2

People used to heat one room. Unfortunately modern heating heats all the rooms. Also you'd have a sack of potatoes in the unheated scullery, and food would not include avocados, fresh green beans in Feb, etc We need to wean ourselves off such an exciting diet.

Part of it must be getting used to lower temperatures. My DGPs lived with one fire in the living room which needed lit every day.

Thermostats on radiators are a very good idea so you're not heating rooms that aren't being used. This is saving us heating oil.

@RewildingAmbridge & @thevassal well there we have it we’ve identified the two people in Mumsnet that cannot legally strike but at the end of the day you chose those careers however highly educated and sought-after your skills are you’ve made that decision so I guess you have to cut your cloth accordingly, everybody else has options - sits back and waits for the other people with excuses as to why they are passively accepting the status quo

StarCat2020 · 14/03/2022 09:23

@icelolly12
Exactly, you are right but only fair to give whoever posted this non-law a chance to prove me wrong

Boris NEVER lies! I think he just 'forgot' about the 600,000 jobs lost when small businesses failed.

Look at the actual vacancies.

Many of them are unsuitable for many people and many are repeated over and over again

Tanith · 14/03/2022 09:26

"We have been through this before, anyone remember the 70s and three day weeks? Or the 80s when base rate went up 4 times in one day to 15%"

Yes, I do. In the 80s, I remember suicides and people posting their keys through the banks' letterboxes because they could no longer afford their mortgages and couldn't sell their houses.

I also remember that the Conservative party was in Government for both.

I can't find any information on current job opening numbers.

Where as this story has lots of info and links about the lies he's told and how people have repeatedly warned Boris about him lying..

Also job sites are packed full of jobs that don't actually exist so recruiters can harvest candidates CVs to hit their targets.

And you do realise that many of those jobs require a specific skill set, experience and qualifications, don't you?

I could apply for 100 jobs and only be qualified to do a couple of them. If another hundred people also apply for those jobs and are also only qualified to do the same 2 I'm qualified for, that's 100 people still out of work.

mudgetastic · 14/03/2022 09:33

Many of the jobs are quite low paid as well

Bringsexyback · 14/03/2022 09:33

TheHumanSatsuma · 14/03/2022 09:35

@VelvetChairGirl

hopefully people take to the streets, the poll tax riots were not that long ago, there must be some backbones left in the country.

government dont care as long as it doesnt affect them, its up to the people to make sure it does.

Not if the Policing Bill succeeds. It will be illegal

Recruitment companies are not allowed to store your data unless it’s relevant, so if you applied for a job five years ago they cannot harvest your CV and store it because it is no longer applicable to the role that you applied for. Please do explain the business model whereby I can make money by collecting people CVs and doing nothing with the information 🤯 @daimbarsatemydogsbone

@speakout

I think we will need to re-learn old skills. I grew up in a house with no central heating, no phone, no fridge. Clothes and shoes were mended at home, food stretched- I grew up on root vegetables and cabbage! We foraged for wood for the fire. We had no car, no holidays. I had no idea we were poor- it's only looking back I realise that.
We were the same when I was young, but I don't think we were poor: that was just the expectation. Clothes were relatively a lot more expensive than they are now. My mother made almost all our clothes - it wasn't until Tescos opened that we had their cheap kids jeans. We had apples with everything (house was built in a former orchard, lots and lots of ancient fruit trees, apples were saved and stored for all year use).
MMMMMaria · 14/03/2022 09:41

Several European countries have implemented a windfall tax. It seems the best solution, least amount of suffering for the poor and the energy companies still make billions, just slightly less.
One of the MP’s ( Chris Bryant ) to propose this said:
“Given the massive profits the energy
companies are making, and seeing
how France has been able to keep
energy inflation to 4% with a windfall
tax, its bewildering that Johnson
refuses to impose a windfall tax on
energy companies to support families.“

NarcissistsEyebrows · 14/03/2022 09:42

On one hand I completely agree with this.

On the other hand it's worth remembering that Amazon are an awful company, treat their staff like shit, and avoid paying taxes. So maybe for those who can afford to donate to food banks they could try and spend 50p in a local shop instead so that their money stays within the economy rather than ending up in Bezos's next space venture.
It's a hard balance to strike, and I don't mean that sarcastically. People in need of a food bank I would not judge one iota for using Amazon etc. But those of us lucky enough to still have some spare money could perhaps put some more thought into how to spend it ethically to benefit more?

You aren't seriously saying all online jobs posted are legit and exist? Because that would be hilarious. Also - many things are illegal or against codes of conduct but still happen.
