To tell DH to shut the en-suite door when he sprays his deodorant?

I’m sat in bed enjoying my morning coffee and he goes into our en-suite bathroom which is located at the end of our bed to do his deodorant without closing the door Angry. I try to explain that this is quite unpleasant for me but he just rolls his eyes and mutters something about me doing the same in the main bathroom and that he can smell it in his office. There is a hall between the main bathroom and his office. The main bathroom is large and airy and he sits in another room with a hallway in between both rooms. The en-suite is tiny and literally at the foot of our bed. He just doesn’t get this. AIBU to tell him that it really isn’t comparable?

Dh goes out to the landing to use his. I refuse to let him use the bedroom. We are paupers and don’t have an en-suite.

I had this conversation with DH just this morning. Since I had covid I’m really sensitive to the particles, I can literally feel them in my lungs and end up coughing madly.

I’ve moved to roll on but when I did use spay I did it under my clothes so the spray was contained. Is that a possibility?

daisypond · 13/03/2022 12:51

We don’t have an en suite but dh puts his deodorant on in the bedroom. I hate it and I’ve asked him to stop. I feel like I’m being poisoned.

Sally872 · 13/03/2022 12:52

Yanbu to ask him to close the door.

You should also close the door when you use yours in main bathroom though, not argue that's different. If he can smell and would like the same courtesy then you should agree.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/03/2022 12:52

Spray deodorants usually make me cough. Not hard to close a door, really.

Shoxfordian · 13/03/2022 12:52

If it bothers you that much then he should try to be a bit more accommodating

Aquamarine1029 · 13/03/2022 12:54

Have you asked him to switch to a roll on?

SickAndTiredAgain · 13/03/2022 12:55

@SilverHairedCat

My DH sprays his downstairs - I have chronic migraine and he used to think I was exaggerating about the effects of me until I puked up.

They are such a strong scent, it's a huge trigger for me to be in a cloud of any sprayed product. I use roll on for this reason.

Not unreasonable to ask not to be part of the spraying session.

Yes but it sounds like OP also uses a spray deodorant so it doesn’t sound like this is the issue.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/03/2022 12:57

I hate spray deodorants, and the men's ones seem particularly pungent. However I use a roll on (because the women's ones are pretty bad too)...

RandomMess · 13/03/2022 13:01

They make me cough and gag and wheeze. DH goes far away so I don't suffer needlessly.

ListeningButNotHearing · 13/03/2022 13:02

YANBU who wants to breathe in chemicals.
Get him a roll-on one, or get him to go in the garden and spray to his heart's content.

andweallsingalong · 13/03/2022 13:02

I thought ywnbu until you said you didn't care about his issue with you spraying in the main bathroom with the door open. YABOTHBU.

MrsClatterbuck · 13/03/2022 13:02

My DH has asthma so sprays are totally out. When I use spray deodorant I use the other ensuite. which I use pretty much most of the time

ABitBesotted · 13/03/2022 13:05

my husband switched to roll on deodorants when we met. The sprays make me puke. Same with hairspray, air freshener...

FTEngineerM · 13/03/2022 13:08

YANBU DP is on roll on because I can’t stand it

PrincessNutella · 13/03/2022 13:09

Some people hate the smell more than others, I would hate it, too, so I'm on Team OP.

ClaudineClare · 13/03/2022 13:12

Men's deodorant sprays are vile. They are so strong-are they made that way because some men are soap dodgers? I have banned them as I hate the stink of them. We both use Dove roll on.

ClinkeyMonkey · 13/03/2022 13:12

Two of our household have asthma, so sprays are kept to a minimum. The odd time I use perfume, I spray it with the door closed. Even people who don't have asthma can find sprays overpowering (strong scents often gives me a thumping headache) and it's not much of a concession to go elsewhere and make someone's life a bit more comfortable.

ClinkeyMonkey · 13/03/2022 13:15

Just remembered, my sister-in-law said her husband's refusal to spray his deodorant in another room was one of the reasons she divorced him😬

He needs a roll on, we dont use sprays in this house, they're dreaful and like someone else said, I cant believe they're still alowed to be sold

Anystarinthesky · 13/03/2022 13:34

I have asthma and asked DP to shut the door which he does.

If your DH won't shut the door chuck out all his sprays and get him a roll on deodorant.

TooSexyForMyZimmerFrame · 13/03/2022 14:36

Most definitely stick deodorant (or roll-on) is the way to go.
They work better, too.

Georgeskitchen · 13/03/2022 14:59

Yanbu
Nothing worse than deodorant flavoured coffee!!

FrankGrillosFloof · 13/03/2022 15:02

People are still spraying deodorant?
