To want to go on a ghost hunt?

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 01:08

I’ve always been interested in the paranormal but have never really had a paranormal experience. Grew up in an 80s new build, moved out into a new build flat, live in a new build now. Have never spent a night in an old building really. I really, really want to go on a ghost hunt.

I’d never bring it up to my friends for fear of being laughed at. I’ve joined a Facebook group and potentially can book tickets for a ghost hunt at a local old manor. There will be a medium etc and just other nutters like me there. Obviously I’ll make sure it’s all above board and will get DH to drop me off and pick me up etc. It seems okay, we’ve set up a group chat and there are plenty of women my age going. Also it’s all legal and they have booked it through the manor directly.

Ideally I’d have DH come with me but he thinks it’s a load of old shit and a waste of £50. He’d stay home with baby, but would take me and pick me up. It’s a lock-in, the group arrive at 11am and we’d finish at 4am.

For some reason I’ve got a massive bee in my bonnet about wanting to do something ‘ghosty’. Is it daft?

We’d arrive at 11pm I mean, not 11am

No, I'd like this too. Check out the Haunted Road podcast. Have fun.

Check out Jim Harold’s Campfire podcast if you like this sort of thing - you’ll be hooked!

Of course it’s daft, but it’s a less harmful brand of paranormal daft than seeing psychics or going to those medium shows where their assistants research and eavesdrop on the audience for material, or deliver generic messages about elderly men whose names begin with M, or J, pointing to their torsos to indicate the cause of their death, which can then be anything heart-, lung-, circulation-, kidney-, stomach- etc related.

I think you’ve got some odd ideas about old buildings, though. I’m sitting writing this in a house almost 200 years old where a historic murder took place only about ten feet from where I’m sitting, and no mysterious draughts, sighs, footsteps, apparitions etc have ever troubled me.

Without outing yourself too much please can you give us a clue where you live?

I went to one with a friend in the summer. Really enjoyed it

Moyny · 13/03/2022 01:33

I’m not in the UK, @Rhannion — and it was early 20thc, nothing particularly sensational for the era.

Do you mind sharing if anything happened?

Thank you.

We had some very weird stuff happen down in the dungeons, things moving etc

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 13/03/2022 01:37

If I'm being entirely honest, I think it is a bit bonkers, but endearingly so. I grew up in/surrounded by various historic buildings & spend a fair amount of time in them, so I know that some places just have an atmosphere. What I would suggest are two things. Firstly, if you're going along as part of a ghost-hunting group there is going to be a HUGE amount of people who want to believe they've seen/heard/felt something, which makes everyone else a bit more suggestible. Secondly, for £50 a pop, the organisers are not going to want you to say 'well, that was rubbish.'

Before you commit to anything, what about going out to a historic ruin, church or similar? Pretty much always free to enter, usually quite quiet, and it might give you a bit of an idea as to how you feel being in an emptyish old building. Or wait until the weather warms up and go champing?

steff13 · 13/03/2022 02:17

I've done it. It's really fun.

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 03:29

It’s also for the fun of it aside from just wanting to have paranormal experiences. I can imagine even if it’s all put on it must be a great laugh.

Nothing will happen apart from some cheap sound effects and a couple of draughts.
It's a con, as are those ghost hunting programmes, and mediums play on and take advantage of the vulmerable and gullible

Featuredcreature · 13/03/2022 06:45

Go for it, sounds like a hoot, love a bit of harmless woo. We like to think we have reality figured out but I think mankind as a whole are suffering a bit from the dunning-Kruger.

Polyanthus2 · 13/03/2022 06:46

Doesn't anyone use an Oiuja board nowadays - they were popular with early teens when i was young. Sit in the dark, board has letters of the alphabet on it, upturned glass in the middle, everyone's index finger on it - ask 'Is there anybody there?" and see what it spells out.
Great fun. if your'e not of a nervous disposition

mrsbitaly · 13/03/2022 06:47

I have a genuine fear of this type of thing our household cannot even use the G word around me, so why I clicked on this post I don't know 🤣 Anyway it sounds like you will have fun and it's good you have been talking with others that will be going.

TrickorTreacle · 13/03/2022 06:53

You want to look for ghosts to see if they're real?

Meanwhile, there is a war going on.

gonnabeok · 13/03/2022 06:55

Definitely go, I go all the time and have travelled across the country to events with different ghost hunting organisations. The people who go are "normal". There are lots of people from all age groups - young people as young as 18 to people in their 60's and 70's. It's great fun and yes I have experienced a lot of "goings on" during them and in some locations not so much. One of the most disappointing I went to was a local manor close to me. nothing happened. It was as quiet as a mouse that night. You don't have to use ouija boards if you don't want to. Many people choose not to. Go with a well known organisation like Spooktacular, Haunted Happenings or Most Haunted events.

Ah yes, better stop living and having fun now.
Els1e · 13/03/2022 10:01

Go and enjoy the experience. My sister has done a couple. Never seen anything but had a good time.

HermioneWeasley · 13/03/2022 10:04

If you can afford the £50 then do it

EmmaH2022 · 13/03/2022 10:06

I'd love to
But not for £50!

I'd love to have the keys to the place and be able to wander there myself.

A building doesn't have to be old to have interesting stuff going on though.
