To want to go on a ghost hunt?

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 01:08

I’ve always been interested in the paranormal but have never really had a paranormal experience. Grew up in an 80s new build, moved out into a new build flat, live in a new build now. Have never spent a night in an old building really. I really, really want to go on a ghost hunt.

I’d never bring it up to my friends for fear of being laughed at. I’ve joined a Facebook group and potentially can book tickets for a ghost hunt at a local old manor. There will be a medium etc and just other nutters like me there. Obviously I’ll make sure it’s all above board and will get DH to drop me off and pick me up etc. It seems okay, we’ve set up a group chat and there are plenty of women my age going. Also it’s all legal and they have booked it through the manor directly.

Ideally I’d have DH come with me but he thinks it’s a load of old shit and a waste of £50. He’d stay home with baby, but would take me and pick me up. It’s a lock-in, the group arrive at 11am and we’d finish at 4am.

For some reason I’ve got a massive bee in my bonnet about wanting to do something ‘ghosty’. Is it daft?

He’s right, but I’d love to do it!

OldTinHat · 13/03/2022 10:17

I've been on absolutely dozens, always great fun!

JuliaSways · 13/03/2022 10:19

@TrickorTreacle

You want to look for ghosts to see if they're real?

Meanwhile, there is a war going on.

Have a day off, there's a dear.
JuliaSways · 13/03/2022 10:28

I did a charity ghost hunt for Alzheimers UK a few years ago (worked at a care home and we wanted to do a bit of staff bonding but also thought it would be a good idea to raise money for a good cause)

I would love for ghosts to be real. I've had strange experiences happen, but ultimately I've been able to explain them logically. I went on the hunt hoping for evidence of the paranormal.

It was an abandoned building that had previously been a psychiatric hospital, an orphanage and a general hospital (Newsham Park hospital in Liverpool) . We had a proper ghost hunting team with us. We split into 2 teams of 10 and each explored different sides of the building, using the ghost hunters scientific 😉 tools.

It was pitch black. Freezing cold. Echoey. Terrifying. Utterly terrifying. I experienced an interaction in the "naughty boys corridor" where a ball rolled toward me. I nearly cried in fright!

The next day, in the safety of bright sunshine and my own bed, I obviously came to my senses. It was very much a show, an immersive experience. There weren't paranormal goings-on.

However. It was SO much fun at the time, I really did enjoy being scared witless (in a safe and managed environment) and there were moments when we were crying with laughter.

I'd go again in a heartbeat and £50 is worth it for me, it's the same as spending money on roller coasters isnt it - the experience of being scared silly in a safe environment.

BrownStripePJ · 13/03/2022 11:17

I've done quite a few of these. I think you'd need to go with a friend /someone you know to get the most from the experience

Nothing ghostly ever happens. It's more about the fun of "being scared"

Im2022 · 13/03/2022 11:24

Yeah I’d do it. I don’t believe in ghosts but I love the idea of being scared and running away from moving things. I love a good scream! You’d probably enjoy it more with a friend? DH isn’t a fan and I don’t have anyone to go with as all my friends aren’t into horror/paranormal, so I’m waiting for my dd to hit 16 so I can go with her 😁.

Hope you have fun!

Thatswhyimacat · 13/03/2022 11:24

Sounds like harmless fun to me and I'm the biggest woo skeptic around!

Verv · 13/03/2022 13:57

I've been on a few and they're brilliant. Go go go !

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 13/03/2022 14:03

We took dc to some apparently haunted stones in Scotland.. Omg I was terrified. Trying to be all cool when I just wanted to leg it to the car. Pitch black. Absolutely awful! Never saw anything but may be because I held dh's coat and shut my eyes! There is a haunted pub where we live and ds worked there and said it was awful.
Go for it op.
We also did a haunted house at York but just lighting and coldness of the old building.. Still creepy though.

Xpologog · 13/03/2022 14:04

Go along with no expectations and see what happens. Bet you’ll have a great time. Please let us know how it goes, I’m quite envious.

Was this explicitly set up as ‘entertainment’, @JuliaSways? I mean, was it marketed as ‘spooky immersive theatre’ or whatever, or we’re there people who genuinely believed ghost psychiatric patients were rolling balls at them?
PleaseBeSeated · 13/03/2022 14:06

Were.

Catlitterqueen · 13/03/2022 14:14

I went on one a few years back and it was fun. My bosses wife wanted to go but he was too scared to go with her so I went instead.
It was an organised group and took part overnight in an old theatre.

Redannie118 · 13/03/2022 14:21

Ive been to tons, all over England and Scotland. Heres a few pointers.

  1. Do a bit research yourself before you go. Google the history of the building and then the hauntings. Read more than one website to get a good cross section. When you arrive at your group they should give you the same info you have found. If they dont they havent got a clue what they are doing and are only there for the money.
2 If they try to convince you the place has demonic energy or black magic was practiced there, they dont know what they are doing and think they are fully qualified because theyve seen 3 episodes of Ghost Adventures. 3 Check if snacks/hot drinks are provided. If not, take your own( for 50 pound pp there really should be) 4 If they jump on every creak, sound or breath of wind as being proof of a ghost without ever checking if there is a rational explaination, they are playing to the crowd and the place is probably about as haunted as your laundry basket. 5 They should have a wide range of equipment for you to use 6 Dress warm in lots of layers. Even though you are indoors wear warm socks and take hats and gloves. Its amazing how cold old places get, esp if you are sitting on a stone/wood floor. 7 Be prepared for very little to happen. Even a seasoned ghost hunter will tell you that 99 percent of the time you are just sitting around waiting for something to happen !
DrDetriment · 13/03/2022 14:23

Go and have fun!

Chocolattay · 13/03/2022 21:01

Have managed to convince a non-believer friend to come with me for a laugh. She and her teenage daughter are coming and I’m actually really looking forward to it Grin

My husband is from eastern Poland. I know there’s a war going on.

With all due respect, DFOD

The one we went to was at the national justice museum (think it's called now) I'm going to book another in the summer

JuliaSways · 14/03/2022 20:56

@PleaseBeSeated the team running it were deadly serious and had a big online following with many repeat customers who went to several hunts throughout the year. It was done as a very scientific investigation into the paranormal.

EmmaH2022 · 14/03/2022 20:59

Let us know how it goes OP. I hope you have fun. I looked up ghost walks after this post and found a couple of books as well.
