Would you say this was suitable for a 9 yo?

Curlywurlyontoast · 11/03/2022 21:05

No. It's got a 15 rating for a reason.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/03/2022 21:06

Of course not.

TirednessButHappiness · 11/03/2022 21:07

I’d let DD watch it at 9 on the basis that I saw it at 8 and absolutely loved it…. watched it pretty much daily for ages.

The more adult themes went totally over my head at that age and I just loved the music and dancing.

Datgal · 11/03/2022 21:08

Yeah, I watched it around that age. Was absolutely magical to me. Watched it over and over.

HiJenny35 · 11/03/2022 21:08

Nope, abortion, sex scenes, she's 17 he's 25, he's being paid for sex by other women, backdrop of racist overtones it's not really a movie that should be watched without some discussion and I think 9 is too young for that type of film.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 11/03/2022 21:08

I would let a 9 year old watch it - mainly because I watched it around that age and the Penny abortion storyline went completely over my head and I just loved the music and the dancing! May also want to fast forward the sex scene as well.

APurpleSquirrel · 11/03/2022 21:09

I watched it at a similar age - it would have been on TV - I loved it & had no understanding of the more adult themes (it was many years later I finally understood the abortion reference).

Amijustagrump · 11/03/2022 21:11

I watched it on video when I was like 6/7, it was my favourite movie as I loved dancing and had no understanding of the themes! Now I'm 24 and love it again, although it was a shock when I realised what actually happened..

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 11/03/2022 21:11

No way. I do actually take note of the certificate ratings for films. Hmm There's all the time in the world when she's older to watch it.

SpicePumpkin · 11/03/2022 21:11

I watched it about that age. I had absolutely no idea what they were on about most of the time, I just liked the dancing and swirly dresses.

tabbycatstripy · 11/03/2022 21:11

With a couple of fast forwards. I wouldn't show the scene inside the hut and wouldn't show the scene just after Penny's operation. I might fast forward a bit of the more sexual dancing. Other than that I'd let a mature 9 YO watch it.

ElbowsandArses · 11/03/2022 21:12

Have just watched this w my quite grown up 12yo. 9 would have been too young for us.

LizzieSiddal · 11/03/2022 21:12

No of course not. The themes are not suitable for a 9 year old.

hartof · 11/03/2022 21:13

I watched it at a similar age at my child minders ( as well as drop dead Fred 😂) I would allow it.

LadyMacduff · 11/03/2022 21:13

I wouldn't show it to my kids but I loved it myself at that age and watched it loads.

NinjaQueen · 11/03/2022 21:16

I watched it around that age and didn't have a clue about the abortion part.

I would probably let a 9 year old watch, mine still likes how to train your dragon and Disney films though so unlikely to enjoy it.

LizzieSiddal · 11/03/2022 21:19

And I know I’ll be in the minority but I hated the filmGrin. Thought the male character was a creep!

tabbycatstripy · 11/03/2022 21:23

It's like Grease, isn't it? I watched it at 8/9 and I didn't understand Rizzo thought she was pregnant or that there were jokes about sex. I just liked the songs.

Sleepyquest · 11/03/2022 21:23

I agree with this. I was a teenager, possibly about 16 before I realised Penny had an abortion. Dunno what I thought had happened when I was watching it weekly at age 10!

You're not alone. I absolutely hate that daft movie.
Kukdoos · 11/03/2022 21:25

I watched it from a young age. Used to sneak into the living room and watch it before my mum got up. Literally didn't have a clue about the story line, but loved the dancing and music.

NameChangeCity123 · 11/03/2022 21:25

No

I was probably younger then 9 when I first watched it, fell in love with it for the music and dancing. My mums friend ended up giving me her video copy because I watched it everytime I was at her house.
The mature themes went right over my head at that age, and if your daughter does ask any questions, have a conversation with her about whatever it is she asks.

beautifullymad · 11/03/2022 21:42

It's got pretty big events covered in it. I'd be concerned that these would be picked up and questioned at such a young age.

No I don't think it's suitable for a 9 year old.

We had enough trouble with 'Marley and me' and that was a straight forward pregnancy and birth!
