Would you say this was suitable for a 9 yo?

Hmm, I dunno, I'm torn.
I love the film
The Penny having an abortion scene not fine but it completely goes over kids heads - - it did mine and I was early teens-- Blush
They watch and enjoy it for the dancing.
Everything else gets filtered out

@constantindigestion

I was about 9 or 10 when I watched it. Did me no harm. I think we overthink things these days. Similar topics are brought up in eastEnders , Corrie etc
I agree.

I watched it at about 10, my Mum bought me on VHS for Christmas along with stand by me which is also rated 15. Neither scarred me for life and I enjoyed both. I didn’t understand some of the adult themes at the time like the abortion storyline but it wasn’t a big deal.

I do worry sometimes about the number of people who think it's incredibly romantic that a 17 year old girl loses her virginity to her teacher and he makes it clear that he was the only one who could see that at 17, she was a grown up after all (proven by the fact he fucked her, I suppose). And then everybody dances and claps.

A small kid isn't really at the stage where it's possible to say 'OK, this would spark off a massive safeguarding investigation these days, so if you ever have a piano/dance/gymnastics teacher wanting to date you or touch you that closely as soon as he won't get an automatic conviction for rape , even though he tells you that he can see you're a woman when everybody else just sees a little girl and you're not like the others, well, ignore the way it's been shown in movies and tell somebody.'

He wasn't her teacher in the sense that normally implies though. Most of the people taking lessons were adults. And she wasn't even really taking lessons, she was doing Penny, and to some extent Johnny, a favour. There was not some kind of duty of care relationship involved.

When I watched it at 9yo I didn't even really think he was older, they all looked old really. I genuinely think there is too much overthinking with it all. It really hasn't made me not understand normal boundaries.

LemonMuffins · 16/03/2022 20:31

I watched it younger than that. Most of it went over my head. I desperately wanted silver dance shoes.

DisforDarkChocolate · 16/03/2022 20:33

With me, yes. There would definitely be some discussion though.

@Curlywurlyontoast

No. It's got a 15 rating for a reason.
It's a 12, not a 15. I wouldn't show it to a 9yo though but my DDs watched it at 12 and 13 and we had a good discussion about abortion rights and class privilege. I think it's a fabulous film that hides some serious messages under the 'teenagers dancing' headline.
